On 26 February, the Russian 22nd Army Corps advanced north from Crimea and began approaching the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant [1] [2] at Enerhodar, about 120 kilometers by road south of Zaporizhzhia city.

On 27 February, the southern outskirts of Zaporizhzhia came under fire, with no casualties reported. [3] Russian forces began shelling the vicinity of Zaporizhzhia International Airport later that evening. [4] Fighting was also reported on the outskirts of Vasylivka, a city about 50 kilometers south of Zaporizhzhia. [5]

On 28 February, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the capture of Enerhodar. However, the mayor of Enerhodar denied the claim that Ukrainian forces had lost control of the city. [6] [7] The Ukrainian military administration for the southeast confirmed on 7 March that Enerhodar was under control of Russian forces. [8]

Russian forces shelled the city again on 19 March, resulting in nine deaths and 17 injuries. Authorities said they would place a 34-hour curfew in response. [9]

Between 20 March to 2 April, refugees from Mariupol arrived in a convoy of buses to Zaporizhzhia. [10] [11]

On 18 April, Russia launched a huge offensive into the oblast taking key cities and airstrikes hit Zaporizhzhia. [12] [13]
