List of aircraft losses during the Russo-Ukrainian War

This is a list of Ukrainian, Russian and Russian-separatist aircraft losses during the Russo-Ukrainian War based on visual evidences or official confirmation from involved parties. It includes helicopters, fixed-wing aircraft and drones (UAVs), and losses from the War in Donbas, the current Russian invasion of Ukraine and the Wagner Group mutiny.

Donbas (2014–2022)

During the War in Donbas, on 20 November 2014, Ukrainian sources reported at a press conference in London, United Kingdom, that their total aerial losses during the conflict in the east were: one Su-24, six Su-25s, two MiG-29s, one An-26, one An-30 and one Il-76. [1] [2] [3] Another Su-24 was damaged. Helicopter losses amounted to seven Mi-8/17s and five Mi-24s. [4] [5] [6]

Ensign of the Ukrainian Air Force.svg 2 July 2014A Ukrainian Sukhoi Su-24, call sign Yellow 11, was damaged by MANPAD fire, the engine caught fire but managed to land but caught fire again and the fire was extinguished. The crew was alive and well. [15]
Ensign of the Ukrainian Air Force.svg 14 July 2014An Antonov An-26 transport aircraft was shot down by a surface-to-air missile over eastern Ukraine while flying at 6,500 metres (21,300 ft). The Ukrainian defence minister claimed that the altitude is far from the reach of a shoulder-launched missile, suggesting that the aircraft was downed. [16] [17] [18] Two crewmembers were captured by pro-Russian militia, four were rescued by Ukrainian forces. [19] The remaining two aviators were found dead on 17 July. [20]
Ensign of the Ukrainian Air Force.svg (2)16 July 2014An Su-25, call sign Blue 03, was shot down over eastern Ukraine near Amvrosiivka, and the pilot ejected successfully. National Security Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said that it was shot down by a missile fired from a Russian MiG-29. [21] [22] [23] Another Su-25 call sign Blue 41 was damaged by separatist a MANPAD, the attack fighter landed safety. [24]
Ensign of the Ukrainian Air Force.svg (2)23 July 2014Two Su-25s, call signs Blue 04 and Blue 33, were shot down in the rebel-held area of Savur-Mohyla. Ukrainian authorities claimed that they were hit by anti-aircraft missiles launched from Russia. [25] [26] [27] [28] Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said that one of the attack planes was probably shot down by an air-to-air missile. [29]

Ensign of the Ukrainian Air Force.svg 29 August 2014A Sukhoi Su-25, call sign Blue 08, was shot down near Starobesheve by a surface-to-air missile during the battle of Ilovaisk. The pilot, Captain Vladyslav Voloshyn, ejected and after 4 days reached Ukrainian-controlled territory. [34] [35] [36]

Ensign of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.svg 5 May 2014A Mil Mi-24 crashed after it was shot down by a heavy machine gun operated by rebel forces. The damaged helicopter landed in a river, and all crew members survived. Later, it was destroyed by an airstrike. [41] [42]
Ensign of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.svg 29 May 2014A Mil Mi-8 was shot down by rebel forces between Kramatorsk and Mount Karachun, killing 14 on board, among them General Serhiy Kulchytsky. Another soldier was seriously injured. [43]

The nine people on board the aircraft died, while the other casualties were locals "bringing their children to the kindergarten", according to Tymoshenko. The 299th Tactical Aviation Brigade ,"Lieutenant General Vasyl Nikiforov", is a formation of the Ukrainian Air Force based at Kulbakino Air Base, Mykolaiv Oblast. The unit is equipped with Sukhoi Su-25 attack aircraft and is tasked with providing close air support for the Ukrainian Ground Forces and the Ukrainian Navy. It is subordinated to Air Command South headquartered at Odesa and has some 950 servicemen. Initially the airbase operated solely Su-25s but in November 2007 it inherited some 20 Aero L-39 Albatros trainer aircraft from a disbanded unit. Known operational aircraft as of 2016 are 13 L-39Cs and 23 Su-25s.

The 383rd Separate Brigade of Unmanned Aviation Complexes is a unit of the Ukrainian Air Force armed with Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and is directly subordinated to the Air Force command. It was established during the Soviet era as a reconnaissance UAV Regiment. It is the only unit of the Ukrainian Air Force operating Tupolev Tu-141, Tupolev Tu-143 and Bayraktar TB2.

39th Tactical Aviation Brigade is brigade of the Ukrainian Air Force, tasked with operating Su-27 and Aero L-39 Albatros aircraft. The brigade traces its origin to the 894th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Soviet Air Force but it's direct lineage is from the 9th Fighter Aviation Regiment of the Ukrainian Air Force. It is based at Ozerne Air Base.

Although the location and date of the incident remain unconfirmed, the aircraft is clearly seen in a flat spin, in which an aircraft plummets from the sky in rotational motion with no forward speed. A flat spin is sometimes impossible to recover from, which was the case here, although it's unclear whether the jet was hit by an air defense system or suffered some other kind of failure.

If the Tu-95MS was indeed damaged, that would add to the confirmed damage inflicted on a Tu-22M3 at Dyagilevo.
