The 2022 Deliatyn attack was a missile attack on an underground weapons depot in Deliatyn, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, Ukraine, on 18 March 2022. It was the first claimed use by Russia of the Kh-47M2 Kinzhal, a hypersonic weapon, against Ukraine. [1] [2] [3] [4]
On 19 March, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the Russian military had used hypersonic missiles from the Dagger complex to destroy underground troops in Deliatyn, Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. [5] Spokesman for the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Yurii Ihnat confirmed a missile strike in Deliatyn. [6] The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine confirmed the attack on the warehouses, but could not establish the exact type of weapons used. In addition, according to the ministry: "Unfortunately, Ukraine has become a testing ground for the entire arsenal of Russia's missile weapons. They use Iskander operational and tactical complexes, Caliber cruise missiles and others: Kh-101, Kh-55, X-555.[ clarification needed ] [7]
US officials confirmed that Russia had launched powerful hypersonic missiles against Ukraine, the first known use of such missiles in combat. Russia claimed it deployed hypersonic missiles to destroy an ammunition warehouse in Deliatyn. The launches were likely intended to test the weapons and send a message to the West about Russian capabilities. [8]
Russia posted a video of what it said was its missile strike on the arms depot in Deliatyn, a village in south-western Ukraine 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the border with Romania. On the evening of 19 March, The War Zone received satellite images taken by American company Planet Labs, which they claim show that the strike took place at a farm or large chicken coop in southeastern Kharkiv Oblast, rather than a large warehouse in western Ukraine. The pictures were taken on March 12, 2022, a week before the video was published and information about the use of the Dagger was spread. By that time, the farm had already been partially destroyed. A cruise missile is a guided missile used against terrestrial or naval targets that remains in the atmosphere and flies the major portion of its flight path at approximately constant speed. Cruise missiles are designed to deliver a large warhead over long distances with high precision. Modern cruise missiles are capable of travelling at high subsonic, supersonic, or hypersonic speeds, are self-navigating, and are able to fly on a non-ballistic, extremely low-altitude trajectory.
Kostiantynivka is an industrial city in the Donetsk Oblast (province) of eastern Ukraine, on the Kryvyi Torets river. Administratively, it is incorporated as a city of oblast significance. It also serves as the administrative center of Kostiantynivka Raion (district), though it does not belong to it. It's also known as Kostyantynivka or Konstantinovka. It developed in the Soviet era into a major centre for the production of iron, zinc, steel and glass. Its population is approximately 67,350 .
Deliatyn, previously called Diliatyn until October 2, 1989, is an urban-type settlement in Nadvirna Raion (district) of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast (region) of Ukraine. An air-launched ballistic missile or ALBM is a ballistic missile launched from an aircraft. An ALBM allows the launch aircraft to stand off at long distances from its target, keeping it well outside the range of defensive weapons like anti-aircraft missiles and interceptor aircraft. Historically, once launched the missile was essentially immune to interception due to a lack of capable anti-ballistic missiles, with those few that did exist being limited to known static positions. This combination of features allowed a strategic bomber to present a credible deterrent second-strike option in an era when improving anti-aircraft defences appeared to be rendering conventional bombers obsolete. However, by the 1990's surface-to-air missile technology had innovated to the point of allowing the interception of such weapons from road mobile systems, albeit at a lower PoK. By the early 21st century capable, dedicated, ABM systems from several nations had been deployed in significant numbers, spurring further innovation in hypersonic glide vehicles to penetrate such systems and keep ballistic missiles capable.
Hypersonic flight is flight through the atmosphere below altitudes of about 90 km at speeds greater than Mach 5, a speed where dissociation of air begins to become significant and high heat loads exist. Speeds of Mach 25+ have been achieved below the thermosphere as of 2020.
The 3M22 Zircon also spelled as 3M22 Tsirkon is a scramjet powered maneuvering anti-ship hypersonic cruise missile produced by Russia.
The Kh-47M2 Kinzhal is a Russian nuclear-capable hypersonic aero-ballistic air-to-surface missile. It has a claimed range of more than 2,000 km (1,200 mi), Mach 12 speed, and an ability to perform evasive maneuvers at every stage of its flight. It can carry both conventional and nuclear warheads and can be launched from Tu-22M3 bombers or MiG-31K interceptors. It has been deployed at airbases in Russia's Southern Military District and Western Military District.
Hypersonic weapons are weapons travelling at hypersonic speed – at between 5 and 25 times the speed of sound, about 1 to 5 miles per second.
The Russian Armed Forces have launched several rocket attacks on Vinnytsia, Ukraine, during the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. A Russian attack in July 2022 which killed 28 people including 3 children, received widespread condemnation and has been labeled as a war crime by EU officials.

The 2022 Russian strikes against Ukrainian infrastructure refers to several pre-winter waves of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine's infrastructure, conducted by Russia as part of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Contrary to the rule of war, most targets were civilian areas and critical energy infrastructure, which is considered a war crime. In the first wave explosions were reported in dozens of cities, including Kyiv, where no strike had occurred since June 2022. A number of further waves hit Ukrainian infrastructure periodically, increasing damage, the number of dead and injured, and seriously affecting energy distribution across Ukraine and nearby countries. By late November 2022, nearly half of the country's energy systems had been destroyed, leaving millions of Ukrainians without power and Ukrainian energy workers trying to restore services.
