Background

India is badly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and facing a second wave of the pandemic. On 23 April 2021, 13 COVID-19 patients in a hospital in Virar, Maharashtra, died after a fire broke out at the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital. [3]

Incident

In the early hours of 1 May 2021, at 1 AM, a fire broke out in the COVID-19 ward of Bharuch Welfare Hospital, a COVID-19 designated hospital, located around 190 km from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. [4]

Aftermath

The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi expressed his deep condolences by saying, Pained by the loss of lives due to a fire at a hospital in Bharuch. [5] The Chief Minister of Gujarat, Vijay Rupani announced ex-gratia aid of 4 lakh (US$5,000) for kin of victims. [6]

On 10 April 2016 at approximately 03:30 AM IST, the Puttingal Temple in Paravur, Kollam, Kerala, India, experienced an explosion and fire after firework celebrations went awry. As a result, 111 people were killed and more than 350 were injured, including some with severe burns. The temple and at least 150 houses in the area of the temple were damaged by the blast. According to local reports and eyewitnesses, the explosion and fire were caused by sparks from a firecracker being used in a competitive fireworks display igniting fireworks in a concrete storehouse. The temple did not have permission from Kerala government authorities to conduct a "competitive fireworks display". About 15,000 pilgrims were visiting the temple to mark local Hindu celebrations during the last day of a seven-day festival of the goddess Bhadrakali.

On 24 May 2019, a fire occurred at a commercial complex in Sarthana jagatnaka area of Surat in the Gujarat state of India. Twenty-two students died and others were injured in an academic coaching centre located on the building's terrace. The fire was started by a short circuit on the ground floor; the students in the coaching centre were trapped by the destruction of a wooden staircase. The first responses of the government of India to the COVID-19 pandemic in the country involved thermal screenings of passengers arriving from China, the country from which the coronavirus disease 2019 originated, as well as of passengers arriving from other countries. As the pandemic spread worldwide, the Indian government recommended social distancing measures and also initiated travel and entry restrictions. Throughout March 2020, several shutdowns and business closures were initiated, and by the end of the month, the Indian government ordered a widespread lockdown. An economic package was announced in May 2020.

On 9 August 2020, a major fire broke out in early morning hours at a COVID-19 facility located at the Hotel Swarna Palace in the city of Vijayawada, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The fire blaze killed 11 people and wounded a further 22. The hotel was used as a temporary COVID-19 facility as it was leased out by the private hospital Ramesh Hospitals Vijayawada for the purpose of treating infected COVID-19 patients. An electrical short circuit was described as the ultimate reason for the incident. The fire had been brought under control by the firefighters within a space of 30 minutes. The patients who survived from the fire blaze were transferred to another quarantine centre.

On 20 August 2020, a major fire broke out in late night hours in an underground hydroelectric power plant in Srisailam in the state of Telangana. The fire blaze killed 9 people, including 5 engineers and 15 employees who were inside the power plant escaped since the fire broke out. It was suspected that the fire broke out due to a short circuit situated at Srisailam's dam left bank. The fire was brought under control by the firefighters after several hours of struggle as of 21 August 2020 and the rescue operations were delayed for hours due to smoke. The bodies of nine workers were recovered during the rescue operations.

On the night of 24 to 25 April 2021, a fire at the Ibn al-Khatib hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, left at least 82 people dead and 110 others injured. The fire was started by the explosion of oxygen tanks designated for COVID-19 patients. A lack of fire detection and suppression systems contributed to the spread of the fire, and many died as a result of being taken off their ventilators to escape. The disaster led to calls for accountability, and the Minister for Health, Hassan al-Tamimi, was suspended by Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi the following day.

The 2021 Mumbai landslide was a series of landslides that occurred in Chembur and Vikhroli, the suburban neighbourhood located in Mumbai, India on 18 July 2021. At least thirty-two people were killed and several others injured after they were trapped under houses that collapsed due to landslides caused by heavy rains. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the loss of lives and announced ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for family of each deceased victim while a sum of ₹50,000 would be given to the injured from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund.
