As vegetation decays, tannins leach into the water, making a transparent, acidic water that is darkly stained, resembling black tea. Most major blackwater rivers are in the Amazon Basin and the Southern United States. The term is used in fluvial studies, geology, geography, ecology, and biology. Not all dark rivers are blackwater in that technical sense. Some rivers in temperate regions, which drain or flow through areas of dark black loam, are simply black due to the color of the soil; these rivers are black mud rivers. The Blackwater River of Florida is a 56.6-mile-long (91.1 km) river rising in southern Alabama and flowing through the Florida Panhandle to the Gulf of Mexico. The river enters Florida in Okaloosa County and flows through Santa Rosa County to Blackwater Bay, an arm of Pensacola Bay. The river passes through Blackwater River State Forest and Blackwater River State Park. Milton, the county seat of Santa Rosa County, is located on the river.

Clarksville is an unincorporated community in Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware, United States located just west of Millville. It is centered, more or less, along Delaware Route 26. Many tourists from the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area pass through the town on their way to and from the Delaware Beaches.
Blackwater Presbyterian Church was a historic Presbyterian church building located near Clarksville, Sussex County, Delaware. It was built in 1767 and rebuilt in 1893. It was a small, frame chapel sheathed in clapboard and measuring 35 feet by 30 feet. It featured a portico supported by a Victorian style bracket. It was the oldest Presbyterian church building in Southern Delaware. The congregation was abolished in October 1921.
