A quarry was constructed on the north side of the Patapsco river in the "Limestone Valley". Joseph Evans and Anne Ellicott settled the site building a small mill in the late 18th century.
The Elysville Manufacturing Company was incorporated in 1829, by Thomas Ely to manufacture cotton textiles. A mill was built on the northern side of the river at Ben's Branch. In 1831, railroad construction of the B&O started through the area. Ely purchased the Evans property on his death in 1833, with a location on Southern shore. [2] The mill was funded by $25,000 in stock sales in July 1845 and erected between August 1845 and the spring of 1846. [3] The mill was owned for a period of time by the Okisko Company, before being acquired by the Alberton Manufacturing Company in 1853. The population was 106 and the mill village was called Alberton at least through the 1870s. The mill changed names to the Sagoman Manufacturing Company, then was then acquired by James S. Gary in 1860, who created still another firm which operated the mill until the 1940s when the C.R. Daniels Company took control.

In 1853, The Elysville and Canton railroad proposed a rail line through the river valley. [4] In 1877 a stagecoach line was founded with once daily trips to Baltimore for one dollar to compete with rail service charging $1.50. [5]
Daniels Mill is a historic mill complex located at Daniels, Howard County, Maryland, in a sheltered, wooded valley of the upper Patapsco River. The complex consists of seven early industrial structures, several concrete block and brick structures of 20th century date, and Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, a granite church built in the High Victorian Gothic style with an off-center tower entrance on the west gable. South of the church is a small cemetery.

The Ellicott City Station in Ellicott City, Maryland, is the oldest remaining passenger train station in the United States, and one of the oldest in the world. The Historical Ellicott City/Baltimore Trolley Line #9 Trail is a 1.25-mile (2.0 km) trail in western Baltimore County, Maryland. It begins at the west end of Edmondson Avenue and extends from Catonsville through Oella to Main Street, Ellicott City. The easy-to-walk, shade-covered trail follows what was originally part of the Catonsville and Ellicott City Electric Railway Company trolley line that shuttled passengers between Ellicott City and Baltimore from the late 1890s to the mid-1950s.

At its east (north) end, it connects with the Philadelphia Subdivision; its west (south) end has a junction with the Capital Subdivision and the Old Main Line Subdivision.
The Mount Savage Iron Works operated from 1837 to 1868 in Mount Savage, Maryland. The ironworks were the largest in the United States in the late 1840s, and the first in the nation to produce heavy rails for construction of railroads. The works were established in an area adjacent to mines for coal, iron ore and fire clay. Facilities included blast furnaces, puddling furnaces, a rolling mill, iron refineries, coke production and brick production.
