Etobicoke North GO Station is a GO Transit train and bus station on the Kitchener line in the Etobicoke district of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 1949 Kipling Avenue just north of Belfield Road, close to the junction of Highways 401 and 409.

The station has 3 mainline tracks and a single platform serving only the northernmost track. A fourth track passes along the north side of the station, but it is only used for local freight access so it is fenced off from the platform.

The platform can accommodate trains up to 12 cars long, and contains heated shelters and upgraded LED lighting. [1]

History

The station opened in late 1974, less than a year after GO Transit began operating the Georgetown (now Kitchener) line. [2]

In 2013, construction began on the Georgetown South railway expansion project. In order to accommodate a widened railway and a significantly increased number of express trains, the original tracks and platforms were demolished and replaced. While the previous arrangement had been a 2-track railway with a side platform on the south side, the new configuration would be a 3-track railway with a side platform on the north side. The north parking lot was expanded to accommodate a new passenger pick-up and drop-off area and a bus loop, and the station building was also upgraded. [1]

Until 29 June 2019, [3] GO Transit operated connecting bus service at the station on route 38A, which operated during peak periods between Etobicoke North and Caledon via Humber College, Woodbridge and Bolton. [4]

Future

As of December 2018, Metrolinx is considering replacing its Etobicoke North GO Station with a new GO station about 2 kilometres west, near Woodbine Racetrack. Demolishing the current Etobicoke North station would free up space for the railway to be widened from 3 mainline tracks to 4. [5]

Services

The station is served by Kitchener line local train services, but not Kitchener line bus services or express train services. As a result, there is no service on weekends. Because the station only has a single platform, there is also no service during peak periods in the counter-peak direction. [6]

Via Rail, UP Express and GO Transit express trains pass through the station without stopping. It is the only station along the Union Pearson Express route where those trains do not stop. The spur line to Pearson International Airport branches away approximately four kilometres west of the station, just past the underpass with Highway 427.

Connecting transit

The closest bus stops are a short distance south on Kipling Avenue at Belfield Road, served by Toronto Transit Commission routes 45 Kipling & 945 Kipling Express. The station is connected by staircases and ramps from Kipling Avenue, which crosses below the tracks.

Line 6 Finch West, also known as the Finch West LRT, is a light rail line under construction in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to be operated by the Toronto Transit Commission. The 10.3-kilometre (6.4 mi), 18-stop line is to extend from Finch West station on Line 1 Yonge–University to the North Campus of Humber College in Etobicoke. The line will operate in a dedicated above-ground right-of-way, much of it within Finch Avenue, segregated from street traffic. The line will use transit signal priority and standard gauge rather than the broad Toronto gauge. The line is forecast to carry about 14.6 million rides a year or 40,000 a day by 2031 and will replace the 36B Finch West bus route, which is one of the three busiest bus routes in Toronto. Line 6 was expected to open within the first half of 2024, with an estimated cost of CA$2.5 billion. For budget purposes, the TTC made the assumption that Line 6 would open no earlier than September 2024. However, the builder, Mosaic Transit Group, expects the line to open by the end of 2024.

GO Transit rail services are provided throughout the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The GO Transit rail fleet consists of 90 MPI MP40 locomotives and 979 Bombardier BiLevel Coaches. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 40,807,100 passengers per year. GO Transit started on May 23, 1967, running single-deck trains powered by diesel locomotives in push-pull configuration on a single rail line along Lake Ontario's shoreline. When GO trains began operation, they ran on tracks mostly owned the two major freight railways of Canada: Canadian National (CN) and CPKC. Over time, GO Transit have acquired tracks, ensuring GO Transit has control over track maintenance and expansion. Metrolinx currently owns 80% of the GO's rail corridors.

St. Clair–Old Weston GO Station is a planned commuter train station in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It will be an infill station on the Kitchener line of GO Transit located between Bloor GO station and the future Mount Dennis station. The station is one of five GO stations to be built as part of the SmartTrack Stations Program to adapt regional commuter service for urban public transit. The construction contract was awarded in 2022; construction is to start in January 2024 for completion in March 2029.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Humber College station</span> Below-grade LRT station under construction in Canada

Humber College is a below-grade light rail transit (LRT) station that is under construction on Line 6 Finch West, a new line that is part of the Toronto subway system. The station will be located at the southwest corner of Highway 27 and Humber College Boulevard on the Humber College North Campus in Etobicoke, Toronto. The station will be the western terminus of Line 6, which is expected to open in late 2024. A walkway will connect the LRT station to the nearby Humber College Bus Terminal.
