The Gem Theater is a historic African American movie theater building in the Broadmoor neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana. The National Register of Historic Places listed the 1951 building which now houses the Zony Mash Beer Project.
The Gem was conceived in 1948 by the Bijou Amusement Company of Memphis, Tennessee and opened in 1951. Having a theater specifically for African-American residents in their own neighborhood meant that customers weren't relegated to one section with inferior amenities, like in segregated theaters that were ubiquitous at the time. [1] The business plan especially called for serving tenants of the nearby B.W. Cooper Housing Development. [2]
The front of the screen included a small stage where a number of prominent African-American performers appeared including jazz trumpeter Avery "Kid" Howard, comedian Onnie "Lollypop" Jones, and jazz singer Alton Purnell. Professional baseball player Roy "Campy" Campanella and his team members competed in a quiz show at the Gem in front of hundreds of African-American children. [3]
As a result of new competition with recently desegregated theaters downtown, the Gem closed in 1960. Radio station WBOK bought it later that year for $65,000 to convert it into a studio, but those plans never materialized. Meyer's Auto Parts later bought the building and added a storefront facing Broad Street, using the theater space as a warehouse. [1] Hurricane Katrina damaged the structure in 2005. [2] The building sat vacant and, by 2014, the city scheduled it for demolition. [4] [5]
In 2011, the New Orleans Historic District Landmarks Commission designated the building as a municipal landmark. [2] Gregory Ensslen, a local developer, later purchased it with a microbrewery and tap room in mind. [6] However, at that time, the zoning laws of New Orleans did not allow such a business outside industrial areas; the city made an exception for microbreweries making less than 12,500 barrels a year. [7] [8]
Wayward Owl Brewing opened in 2016, but left the building two years later with plans to brew elsewhere. [9] In 2019, the Zony Mash Beer Experience opened in the space also as a microbrewery, with live entertainment, food trucks, beer garden and tap room, which can only sell the beer made on site. [10] The business is named after the Zony Mash album by The Meters, a local funk band. [11]
Prominent local architects Felix Julius Dreyfous and Solis Seiferth designed the building in 1948. They previously worked on designing Charity Hospital and the new Louisiana State Capitol. [3]
The building style has been alternately described as Modern Movement, Art Moderne, and Art Deco. [1] [2] Prior to restoration, the building survived prolonged periods of neglect but survived thanks to sturdy masonry construction and deep foundation pilings. [5] [7]
The two-story brick building sits on a cement foundation with a stucco front. That facade includes yellow and maroon tiles along the base, raised vertical bands on the middle portion, and steps along the roofline. A recessed central bay includes three doors on each side of where a box office once stood. On each side of the entrance are three movie poster openings.
The exterior is dominated by a large polygonal aluminum marquee projecting from the building with two "GEM" neon signs. [1] The original blue signs were lost but were reproduced based on memories of residents since only black and white photographs were available. [12] [2]
In the interior, none of the original seating, flooring, or ceiling remain due to water damage and neglect. Part of what makes the Gem distinctive is the lack of features common in segregated theaters of the period: there is no separate ticket booth with stairs bypassing the main lobby leading to the upper balcony with fewer amenities. [1]
The intact second floor mezzanine, which previously included the projector room, is now rented for private events. [10] While the Wayward Owl ran the brewing equipment prominently down the center of the interior, Zony Mash reconfigured the interior layout to create a large open space for events. [11]
Craft beer is beer manufactured by craft breweries, which typically produce smaller amounts of beer than larger "macro" breweries and are often independently owned. Such breweries are generally perceived and marketed as emphasising enthusiasm, new flavours, and varied brewing techniques.
Anchor Brewing Company was a brewery on Potrero Hill in San Francisco, California. Founded in 1896, the brewery underwent several changes in location and ownership throughout its history. After years of declining sales due to competition with larger breweries, Anchor was purchased by Frederick Louis “Fritz” Maytag III in 1965, preventing its closure. The brewery operated at its Potrero Hill location from 1979 and was one of the last remaining producers of steam beer, a variety of beer trademarked by the company.
Broadmoor is a neighborhood of the city of New Orleans. A subdistrict of the Uptown/Carrollton Area, its boundaries as defined by the New Orleans City Planning Commission are: Eve Street to the north, Washington Avenue and Toledano Street to the east, South Claiborne Avenue to the south, and Jefferson Avenue, South Rocheblave Street, Nashville Avenue, and Octavia Street to the west. It includes the Broadmoor Historic District which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003 and increased in its boundaries in 2007.
Faubourg Brewing Company was a brewery founded in New Orleans, Louisiana, on October 31, 1907, and originally named Dixie Brewing Company. The brewing operation was located on Tulane Avenue until 2005 when it closed due to damage from Hurricane Katrina. After that the beer was contract brewed out of state until November 2019 when a new brewery opened in New Orleans. In 2021 the brewery was renamed the Faubourg Brewing Company. Following the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in May 2024, the company announced its closure and that all equipment from their New Orleans plant would be auctioned off.

Zony Mash is an album of vintage rarities and non-album B-sides by the funk group The Meters. The album consists of 13 tracks of the band's early works with Josie Records from 1968 to 1971. Eight tracks were originally released as singles, and five tracks were released as bonus tracks on re-issue albums.
Mikkeller is a craft brewery founded in 2006 in Copenhagen, Denmark that was originally based on the so-called "cuckoo", "phantom" or "gypsy brewer" ethos; that is, the company does not operate an official brewery and, instead pays a brewery in Belgium to produce their beer. The company now operates several brewpubs, such as Warpigs in Copenhagen and Mikkeller Brewpub London. Mikkeller was founded by two home brewers: Mikkel Bjergsø, a high school teacher, and journalist Kristian Klarup Keller. Both sought to introduce their home-brewed beer to the public and to "challenge beer friends with intense new tastes", drawing inspiration from the American breweries that "aren't afraid to play and break all the rules".

Dishes invented in New Orleans include po' boy and muffuletta sandwiches, oysters Rockefeller and oysters Bienville, pompano en papillote, and bananas Foster, among others.
Bayou Teche Brewing is a brewery in Arnaudville, Louisiana, USA. Bayou Teche Brewing, named for the nearby Bayou Teche, was formed by three brothers, Karlos, Byron and Dorsey Knott, when they started brewing in an abandoned railcar on St. Patrick's Day in 2009.
The Gnarly Barley Brewing Company is a brewery in Hammond, Louisiana. The brewery consists of a brewhouse and an open air taproom named the Gnar Bar.
Bijou Amusement Company was a movie theater business in the United States. It was headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. Its Bijou Theatre in Nashville was one of the premiere venues for African American audiences in the Southern United States. Milton Starr, who was part of the prominent Jewish family that owned and ran the theater, was the first president of the Theater Owners Booking Association (TOBA), headquartered in Chattanooga. Performers who starred at the theater included Bessie Smith, Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey, Lafayette Players, Butterbeans and Susie, Ethel Waters, and Irvin C. Miller’s Brown Skin Models. Boxers Tiger Flowers and Sam Langford had bouts at the venue. The theater and a Masonic lodge next door were razed in the 1950s as part of an urban renewal plan and replaced by the city’s Municipal Auditorium. The fight to save the theater reached the U.S. Supreme Court.
