Keoratola crematorium or Keoratola Burning Ghat or Shahnagar Keoratola crematorium is a crematory located at Tollygunge Road, Kalighat, Kolkata. This is one of the largest cremation grounds in Kolkata. [1]

History

Before the establishment of this crematorium, there was a jungle of Caraway trees and the area was named as Keoratala. This crematorium was established in 1862 beside the bank of Adi Ganga. Keoratala crematorium was modernised by Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, Ex-Chief minister of West Bengal. There is a park besides it with number of tombs and memorials. [2]

In 1953, along with Deepak Majumder and Ananda Bagchi, he founded the Bengali poetry magazine, Krittibas. He is regarded as one of the most prolific and popular writers in Bengali since Rabindranath Tagore.

The Government College of Art & Craft (GCAC) in Kolkata is one of the oldest Art colleges in India. The institute was later renamed as the Government School of Art and in 1951 it became the Government College of Art & Craft.

Nimtala Crematorium is located on Beadon Street, Kolkata, India. The crematorium is also historically known as Nimtala burning ghat, or simply Nimtala ghat. Shanu Lahiri was a painter and art educator who belonged to one of the most prominent and culturally elevated families of Kolkata and a first-generation modernist who emerged post independence. She was one of Kolkata's most prominent public artists, often dubbed as "the city's First Lady of Public Art", undertaking extensive graffiti art drives across Kolkata to beautify the city and hide aggressive political sloganeering. Her paintings are housed in the Salar Jung Museum and the National Gallery of Modern Art.

Bakchar massacre refers to the massacre of nine unarmed Bengali Hindu residents by the Razakars on the instructions of Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed in the village of Bakchar in Faridpur district on 13 May 1971. On 17 July 2013 the International Crimes Tribunal found Mojaheed responsible for the killings and sentenced him for life. In 2015, a four-judge bench of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court reduced the death sentence to life imprisonment.

Ena Saha is an Indian film and television actress and producer who predominantly appears in Bengali films and television shows. She is known for her portrayals in the films Cheena Badam, SOS Kolkata, Bhoot Chaturdashi and Bonnyo Premer Golpo. She has also done a Malayalam film named You Too Brutus (film), a hindi film called Chauranga. She has also done a Telugu film named Lanka.

<i>Aamar Durga</i> Indian television series

Aamar Durga is an Indian Bengali television soap opera that premiered on 18 January 2016 on ZEE5 and Zee Bangla. Produced by Acropolis Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., it starred Sanghamitra Talukdar and Hritojeet Chattopadhyay in lead roles.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ashok Lahiri</span> Indian politician

Ashok Kumar Lahiri is an Indian economist and a member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly from Balurghat. He is currently serving as a member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission. Lahiri previously served as 12th Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India, reader at the Delhi School of Economics, chairman of Bandhan Bank, executive director at the Asian Development Bank and director of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy and had stints with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, as a consultant and senior economist respectively. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
