Kirk Cullimore Jr. is an American attorney and politician serving as a member of the Utah State Senate. Elected in 2018,Cullimore represented the 9th district until 2023. He currently represents the 19th district after being reelected in 2022. [1]
Cullimore was born and raised in Sandy,Utah. He earned an associate's degree from Utah Valley University,Bachelor of Arts from Brigham Young University,and Juris Doctor from the University of Oklahoma College of Law. [2]
After graduating from law school,Cullimore began working as an attorney. He established a private legal practice in 2012. In 2018,Cullimore was elected to the Utah State Senate,succeeding Wayne L. Niederhauser. Cullimore was sworn in on January 1,2019. [3]
In 2024,Cullimore as Utah Senate Majority Whip helped push through an amendment to Utah’s Constitution that gave Utah lawmakers powers to amend and repeal ballot initiatives. [4] [5] Utah Republicans pushed for this amendment to the Constitution after a ballot initiative passed that prohibited partisan gerrymandering. [5]

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Utah since October 6,2014. On December 20,2013,the state began issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples as a result of the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah's ruling in the case of Kitchen v. Herbert,which found that barring same-sex couples from marrying violates the U.S. Constitution. The issuance of those licenses was halted during the period of January 6,2014 until October 6,2014,following the resolution of a lawsuit challenging the state's ban on same-sex marriage. On that day,following the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal to hear an appeal in a case that found Utah's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional,the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the state to recognize same-sex marriage.
Benjamin Michael McAdams is an American politician and attorney who served as the U.S. representative from Utah's 4th congressional district from 2019 to 2021. He was the only Democratic member of Utah's congressional delegation,and a member of the Blue Dog Coalition. From 2013 to 2019,he served as mayor of Salt Lake County,and from 2009 to 2012,he was the Utah state senator from the 2nd district,which includes Salt Lake City,South Salt Lake,and a portion of West Valley. McAdams was elected to Congress in 2018,narrowly defeating two-term Republican incumbent Mia Love. In 2020,McAdams ran for reelection,but he lost to Republican challenger Burgess Owens. He is the most recent Democrat to represent Utah in Congress.

The Count My Vote initiative was a 2014 Utah citizens' initiative measure which proposed to replace the state's caucus selection process for candidates for public office with a mandatory primary election. The initiative sponsors' stated purposes were to increase civic engagement and voter participation. The text of the Count My Vote initiative was incorporated into Senate Bill 54 by the Utah State Legislature—along with an option for a dual-path nominating process involving conventions and/or petitions—and this bill was signed into law by Governor Gary Herbert in March 2014. The constitutionality of this law was challenged in federal court by the Utah Republican Party and the Utah Constitution Party,which opposed the option of qualifying for a primary by means of gathering signatures.

The Utah Gender-Neutral Constitutional Language Amendment,appearing on the ballot as Utah Constitutional Amendment A,is a constitutional amendment in Utah,which appeared on the ballot on November 3,2020. The amendment intended to replace all gendered language in the Constitution of Utah with gender-neutral language. According to Deidre Henderson,the State Senator who proposed the amendment,only 6 of the 237 sections of the constitution would be modified,in order to bring them in line with the other 231 sections,which already use gender-neutral language. The amendment was unanimously approved in both the State Senate and the Utah House of Representatives,allowing it to be put on the ballot. If the amendment was passed by voters,it would go into effect in 2021.
