Angela Romero [1] is an American politician and the Democratic leader of the Utah House of Representatives representing the 25th District since January 1,2023. Prior to redistricting,she represented the 26th District since January 1,2013. [2]
Romero was born and raised in Tooele,Utah. She is Chicana and Assiniboine. [3] She attended the University of Utah where she earned a bachelor's degree in political science and later a master's degree in public administration. [4]
Romero was first elected in November 2012. [4] During the 2016 legislative session,she served on the Executive Offices and Criminal Justice Appropriations Subcommittee,the House Economic Development and Workforce Services Committee,the House Ethics Committee,the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee,and the House Public Utilities,Energy and Technology Interim Committee,Native American Legislative Liaison Committee. On February 26,2018,Romero was elected First Vice President of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL). [6] And,in March 2022,she was elected President Elect of the NHCSL for a two-year term,expected to be followed by service as President for the 2024-25 term. [7]
As part of that NHCSL leadership role,Romero represented Utah in several meetings and events at the White House. She met with Vice President Kamala Harris,on Hispanic policy priorities in March 25,2022. [8] They met again on August 5,2022 to discuss fighting for abortion rights. [9] And,Romero participated in the signing ceremony of the Respect for Marriage Act on December 13,2022. [10]
On November 22,2022,Romero was elected Minority Leader for the 2023-24 term,succeeding Brian King. [11] [12] [13] Romero's leadership team became the first all-women leadership team (of a minority or majority party) in the Utah House of Representatives, [14] joining the also first-ever all-women Utah Senate Democratic leadership team elected 12 days earlier. [15] At the same time,Romero joined Luz Escamilla in becoming the first Latinas to be elected Minority Leaders in the Utah Legislature. [16]

Romero and her son,Cio,live in the Glendale neighborhood where she also works as the Community Programs Manager for the Sorenson Unity Center. [19] She is a Catholic. [20]

Benjamin Michael McAdams is an American politician and attorney who served as the U.S. representative from Utah's 4th congressional district from 2019 to 2021. Kathleen Riebe is an American politician from Salt Lake City,Utah. She was a member of the Utah State Board of Education through 2018,and now represents Utah's 15th senate district in the Utah State Senate. Prior to redistricting she represented the 8th district. On May 31,2023,she announced to KSL News Radio that she was running in the 2023 Utah's 2nd congressional district special election. She was nominated by the Utah Democratic Party to be their candidate in the general election.
Karen Kwan is an American politician serving in the Utah State Senate from the 12th district. On January 16,2023 she was selected by delegates of the Utah Democratic Party to replace resigning Senator Karen Mayne. Before her appointment to the Senate she served in the Utah House of Representatives,representing the 34th district from 2017 to 2023. She also previously served as the House Minority Whip.
Erin Mendenhall is an American politician and activist who has been serving as the mayor of Salt Lake City,Utah since 2020. Kera Birkeland is an American politician,educator,and coach from Utah. She currently serves as the representative for Utah House District 4. She is on the Executive Offices and Criminal Justice Appropriations Subcommittee,House Education Committee,and House Judiciary Committee. Birkeland replaced Logan Wilde in April 2020,and was elected to a full term in 2020,with 64 percent of the vote.
The 2023 Salt Lake City mayoral election took place on November 21,2023,to elect the mayor of Salt Lake City,Utah. The election was officially nonpartisan. Incumbent mayor Erin Mendenhall won reelection to a second term in office,defeating former mayor Rocky Anderson and filmmaker Michael Valentine. This was the first mayoral election in the city's history to utilize ranked-choice voting,although Mendenhall won a majority of votes in the initial round,so no ranked-choice tabulation was necessary.
