DeLena Johnson (born 1963) is a United States politician who sits in the Alaska House of Representatives. [1] She is a member of the Republican Party,representing District 25. Prior to redistricting she represented District 11. [1] [2]
Prior to serving on the legislature,Johnson was twice elected as Mayor of Palmer,Alaska. [3]
Johnson moved to Alaska with her family in 1967,at the age of three. [4] She attended Susitna Valley High School. She then continued on to earn a BA degree in mathematics from the University of Alaska. [4]
A Republican,Johnson was elected to the Alaska House of Representatives on November 8,2016. [5] Johnson served as a member of the House Energy,House Resources,and House State Affairs committees.
Johnson was reelected in 2018 and 2020. [6] [7] In 2020,Johnson sponsored a resolution requesting the United States Secretary of the Treasury to mint $1 coins honoring Elizabeth Peratrovich under the Native American $1 Coin Act. The resolution was successful. [8]

Women's suffrage was won fairly easily for non-native women in Alaska in 1913. Prior to becoming a territory,non-native women were able to vote in school board elections. Women's suffrage work took place in the Alaska chapters of the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). After Alaska was admitted as a territory,the first Territorial Legislature passed a women's suffrage bill in 1913 and was signed into law on March 21. This law only applied to non-native women since Alaska Natives were not considered citizens of the United States. Alaska Natives continued to fight for the right to vote,along with other civil rights throughout the twentieth and twenty-first century.

The law,signed on February 16,1945,prevents and criminalizes discrimination against individuals in public areas based on race. The law came about after Alaska Natives fought against segregation and other forms of discrimination in Alaska.

State senators serve four-year terms in the Alaska Senate,with half of the seats normally up for election every two years. However,because most districts were greatly changed in redistricting,elections were held for 19 of the 20 seats;the only exception is District T,represented by Democrat Donny Olson,which was mostly unchanged in redistricting and thus did not have an election. Some senators were elected to serve four-year terms,while others would serve shortened two-year terms.
