Bruce E. Tarr (born January 2,1964 [1] ) is an American politician who serves as a Republican member and Minority Leader of the Massachusetts Senate. [2] Since 1995 he has represented the 1st Essex and Middlesex District. He is a member of the United States Republican Party and a former member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
The 1st Essex and Middlesex district includes 19 communities:the cities of Gloucester and Newburyport and the towns of Boxford,Essex,Georgetown,Groveland,Hamilton,Ipswich,Manchester-by-the-Sea,Middleton,Newbury,Precincts 5A,7,and 8 in North Andover,North Reading,Rockport,Rowley,Salisbury,Topsfield,Wenham,and West Newbury.
Tarr was born in Gloucester,Massachusetts. [1] He is a graduate of Suffolk University,for his undergraduate and J.D. studies.
Tarr served as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1991 to 1995. [1]
Tarr was elected to the Massachusetts Senate in 1994,and assumed office on January 3,1995. He has served as the Minority Leader since 2011. [2]

Tarr was reelected without opposition in 1998, 2000, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020.

Althea Garrison is an American politician from Boston, Massachusetts who previously served a single term in the Massachusetts House of Representatives (1993–1995) and a partial term as an at-large councilor on the Boston City Council (2019–2020). She is considered the earliest transgender person known to have been elected to a state legislature in the United States. She was outed against her will by the Boston Herald after her 1992 election. She is a perennial candidate, having been an unsuccessful candidate for political office at least 44 times.
Diana DiZoglio is an American politician who is the current Massachusetts State Auditor. A member of the Democratic Party, DiZoglio had previously represented the 1st Essex District in the Massachusetts Senate from 2019 to 2023. The district included her home city of Methuen as well as Newburyport, Haverhill, Merrimac, Amesbury, Salisbury, and four of eight precincts in North Andover.
Shawn C. Dooley is an American politician from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in the 9th Norfolk district, succeeding Dan Winslow. The 9th Norfolk District constitutes all or parts of the Towns of Medfield, Millis, Norfolk, Plainville, Walpole, and Wrentham. A member of the Republican Party, he was sworn in January 29, 2014. In 2022, he vacated the seat to run for the Massachusetts State Senate, he was defeated by incumbent Becca Rausch.
