The Newark Light Rail (NLR) is a light rail system serving Newark, New Jersey, and surrounding areas, owned by New Jersey Transit and operated by its bus operations division. The service consists of two segments, the original Newark City Subway (NCS), and the extension to Broad Street station. The City Subway opened on May 26, 1935, while the combined Newark Light Rail service was officially inaugurated on July 17, 2006.
The Northeast Corridor Line is a commuter rail service operated by NJ Transit between the Trenton Transit Center and New York Penn Station on Amtrak's Northeast Corridor in the United States. The service is the successor to Pennsylvania Railroad commuter trains between Trenton and New York, and is NJ Transit's busiest commuter rail service. After arrival at New York Penn Station, some trains load passengers and return to New Jersey, while others continue east to Sunnyside Yard for storage. Most servicing is done at the Morrisville Yard, at the west end of the line.
Hoboken Terminal is a commuter-oriented intermodal passenger station in Hoboken, Hudson County, New Jersey. NJ Transit Morris, Inc., formerly PABCO Transit, Inc., is a subsidiary of New Jersey Transit Corporation based in Dover, New Jersey operating local bus services in Morris County. The company was originally called Passaic – Athena Bus Lines which operated service in Passaic and Clifton, New Jersey.
As of 2024, the active fleet of NJ Transit Bus Operations consisted of approximately 2800 buses which it housed and maintained at eighteen NJ Transit bus garages. NJ Transit and companies leasing buses from the state agency use various models of buses between 25 feet (7.6 m) (minibuses and 60 feet feet in length to provide local and commuter service within the state of New Jersey and adjacent parts of New York and Pennsylvania. NJ Transit introduced compressed natural gas buses in 1999 and hybrid electric buses in 2007. As of the 2020s, NJ Transit began introducing clean diesel and battery electric buses to make the transition to build a lower or zero-emission fleet. Academy Bus Lines is a bus company in New Jersey providing local bus services in northern New Jersey, line-run services to/from New York City from points in southern and central New Jersey, and contract and charter service in the eastern United States from Boston to Miami. In 2014, Academy acquired Go Buses, which currently operates bus service between Boston and Washington, D.C., and in southern Florida. On September 27, 2023, Academy acquired James River Transportation, which operates in Virginia. Academy is the third-largest motorcoach operator in the United States and Canada.
The Lehigh and Northampton Transportation Authority (LANTA) is a regional public transportation authority that provides public bus and rapid transit service throughout the Lehigh Valley region of eastern Pennsylvania, including Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton, and their respective suburbs.
South Orange is a New Jersey Transit station in South Orange, New Jersey along the Morris and Essex rail line. It is located in the business district of South Orange, near its town hall. It is one of two train stations in the township of South Orange, Mountain Station being the other near the township border. South Orange station was built by the Lackawanna Railroad in 1916.
NJ Transit Bus Operations is the bus division of NJ Transit, providing local and commuter bus service throughout New Jersey and adjacent areas of New York State and Pennsylvania. It operates its own lines as well as contracts others to private carriers. In 2023, the bus system had a ridership of 131,253,500.
Wheels Suburban Transportation Services is a system of routes owned by New Jersey Transit and operated mostly under contract by private companies primarily in Warren and Union counties, as well as Northampton County in Pennsylvania. WHEELS also provided service in Hunterdon, Somerset, Sussex, Morris and Warren counties, which were eliminated in 2010 because of budget reductions.
Rutgers Campus Buses are a zero-fare bus service used by students at Rutgers University campuses. It is the second-largest bus service in New Jersey after NJ Transit, and one of the largest university bus systems in the United States. Service is provided by Transdev year-round, including weekends and holidays. Late night shuttle service for students is provided by Rutgers Department of Transportation Services when the New Brunswick campus transit system is not in service. Football and other event shuttles are operated by Academy Bus Lines.
Bus rapid transit (BRT) in New Jersey comprises limited-stop bus service, exclusive bus lanes (XBL) and bus bypass shoulders (BBS). Under the banner Next Generation Bus NJ Transit (NJT), the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), and the metropolitan planning organizations of New Jersey (MPO) which recommend and authorize transportation projects are undertaking the creation of several additional BRT systems in the state.
