This article lists all the captains of the men's Scotland national football team. As of 18 November 2024, Scotland have played 839 officially recognised international matches and have had 156 different team captains. Andrew Robertson has captained Scotland most often, in 58 games. [1] Four other players (George Young, Billy Bremner, Darren Fletcher and Gary McAllister) have captained the team at least 30 times. [1]
The first captain of the Scotland team was Robert Gardner, who led the team in the first ever international match, against England on 30 November 1872. He went on to captain Scotland on just one further occasion, the second international match, on 8 March 1873, against the same opposition.

Statistics include official FIFA recognised matches, five matches from a 1967 overseas tour that were reclassified as full internationals in 2021, [8] and a match against a Hong Kong League XI played on 23 May 2002 that the Scottish Football Association includes in its statistical totals. [2] [9]
The above list considers captains selected for games officially recognised by FIFA and the Scottish Football Association. In addition to these, there have been a number of games played by Scotland teams on an unofficial basis, for example the "wartime internationals" during the Second World War. Some of the captains selected for these unofficial games are listed below.
Joseph Montgomery Harper is a Scottish former footballer, mainly remembered for his two spells with Aberdeen, during which he won the three main domestic trophies once each and became the club's record goalscorer with 199 goals in major competitions. He also played for Morton and Hibernian in Scotland, and for Huddersfield Town and Everton in England. He finished his career in the Highland League.
Thomas Usher Pearson was a Scottish professional football player and manager.
James McStay was a Scottish football player and manager. He spent most of his career at Celtic, and was a captain and manager for the club.
James Eadie Gordon was a Scottish footballer who spent most of his career with Rangers. During the First World War, he was a Sergeant in the Highland Light Infantry.
The Scottish League XI was a representative side of the Scottish Football League. The team regularly played against the (English) Football League and other national league select teams between 1892 and 1980. For a long period the annual fixture between the English and Scottish leagues was only second in importance to the matches between the two national teams. The fixture declined in importance after regular European club competition was instituted in the 1950s; matches in the 1960s and 1970s were played irregularly and poorly attended. A match involving a Scottish League XI was last played in 1990, to mark the centenary of the League.
This page details Scotland national football team records and statistics; the most capped players, the players with the most goals, and Scotland's match record by opponent and decade.
Alexander Pollock Donaldson was a Scottish footballer, who played for numerous teams in England as well as the Scotland national team. An outside-forward, he stayed with Bolton Wanderers from 1912 to 1921, and also spent time with Sunderland, Manchester City, Chorley, and Ashton National. After his football career ended, he opened a sports shop in Gorton, Manchester.
John Campbell was a Scottish footballer, who played for Celtic, Aston Villa, Third Lanark and the Scotland national team.
This article lists the results for the Scotland national football team between 1960 and 1979.
Henry Anthony Hood was a Scottish football player and manager.
Hibernian Park was the home ground of the Scottish football club Hibernian from 1880 until the club's dissolution in 1891. When the club was reformed in 1892, the club took out on a lease on a site which became known as Easter Road. Hibernian Park was also located in the Easter Road area; in fact, it was closer to Easter Road itself than the present stadium because it was on the site of what is now Bothwell Street.
James Fergus Cruickshank was a Scottish footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He played for Heart of Midlothian through most of the 1960s and 1970s, making nearly 400 league appearances. He had brief spells with Queen's Park at the start of his career and spent his final season with Dumbarton. Cruickshank also represented Scotland and the Scottish League.
John Bell Cameron was a Scottish international football player and manager. He played for St Mirren before joining Blackburn Rovers in 1904. He spent three years at the club before signing for First Division rivals Chelsea. After they were relegated, he helped Chelsea to win promotion out of the Second Division in 1911–12. He signed with non-League Port Vale in 1913, departing the following year, only to return in 1916. He briefly served as the club's manager from August 1918 until his departure in January 1919.
William Thomas Callaghan is a Scottish former professional footballer, who played for Dunfermline Athletic, Berwick Rangers, Cowdenbeath and Scotland. Callaghan played for Dunfermline for most of his club career, playing in two Scottish Cup Finals, losing 3–2 to Celtic in 1965 and winning 3–1 against Hearts in 1968. In all he made 426 appearances for the Pars, including 34 in European competition, a club record. Willie's brother Tommy Callaghan also played for Dunfermline, and they are the last pair of brothers to have played the full 90 minutes together in the same Scottish Cup-winning side as of 2009,- In 2008, Callaghan was inducted into Dunfermline Athletic's hall of fame.
Arthur Alan Duncan Anderson was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a centre half for Alloa Athletic, Falkirk, Millwall, Scunthorpe United and Hearts.
James Dougal was a Scottish footballer who played as an inside forward for Kilsyth Rangers, Falkirk, Preston North End, Carlisle United, Halifax Town and Chorley, either side of World War II.
This is a progressive list of football players who have held or co-held the record for goals scored for the Scotland national football team. The list begins with Henry Renny-Tailyour and William Gibb, who both scored in the 4–2 defeat by England in March 1873. The first official international game, contested by the same teams in November 1872, had finished goalless. The record is shared by Denis Law and Kenny Dalglish, with 30 goals each.
