Police-General Listyo Sigit Prabowo (born 5 May 1969) is an Indonesian high ranking police officer,who is currently the Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Kapolri). He was previously the Head of the Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim),and was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo as new National Police Chief on 27 January 2021. [1]
Prabowo was born on 5 May 1969 in Ambon,Maluku,as the son of Sutrisno,an air force officer of Javanese descent from Yogyakarta who was posted in that city. [2] He graduated from the National Police Academy in 1991. He is married to Juliati Sapta Dewi Magdalena (Diana Listyo). The couple have two sons and a daughter. He is also the second Christian head of police in the history of Indonesia. [3] [4]
He began his career as a police officer in the Tangerang police division of the Banten provincial police district. He held several posts,such as Chief of Police of Pati (2009),Chief of Police of Sukoharjo (2009),Deputy Chief of Semarang Metropolitan Police (2010),and Deputy Chief of Surakarta Metropolitan Police (2011). In 2014,he was assigned to be President Joko Widodo's adjutant. Then he served as Chief of Banten Regional Police (2016),Chief Division of Profession and Internal Security Division (2018),and Chief of Criminal Investigation Agency (2019). [5]
On 27 January 2021,he was appointed as Chief of National Police. As part of his appointment,he was promoted to a four-star police general. [6] He is the second Indonesian Christian and the first Indonesian Catholic to serve the office. [7] [8] He is also the second-youngest Chief of National Police at the time he took office (51 years,267 days),the record which was still held by Police General Tito Karnavian,who was 51 years,261 days when he took office in July 2016.
General Listyo is known by his vision of police leadership "Presisi" (prediktif,responsibilitas,tranparansi,berkeadilan. translated as predictive-responsible-transparent-equitable),as he presented to the House of Representatives committee during his fit-and-proper test after being President's sole candidate. This vision,however,will continue what his predecessor General Tito did with his then-vision "Promoter" (profesional,modern,dan terpercaya. translated as professional,modern,and trusted). [9] [10]
In the summer of 2022,he presided over the investigation into the murder of Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat,overcoming an alleged cover-up by police generals to conceal an alleged premeditated murder by Inspector General Ferdy Sambo,head of internal affairs of the Indonesian National Police. [11]

Operation Cartenz's Peace,formerly Operation Nemangkawi,is a joint-operation conducted by Indonesian National Armed Forces and Indonesian National Police to curb armed separatist rebels in Papua. According to Papua Regional Police head,Mathius Fakhiri,there are currently six active separatist groups located mainly in Papua highlands. While there are two groups which became less active or retired after Operation Nemangkawi. Tinggi Nambut faction under Goliath Tabuni were beaten in October 2018,and 10 members were subdued by Police. Goliath Tabuni moved to Gome District and presumed retired. Lanny Jaya faction under Purom Wenda became less active after Police operation in Balingga District and its headquarters in Kali Mau. Some members of this group left and "return" to Indonesia.
On 31 March 2021,at around 16:30 Western Indonesia Time (UTC+7),a shooting occurred at the Indonesian National Police headquarters in South Jakarta,Jakarta,Indonesia. A female assailant attacked police headquarters with a handgun and was shot dead after firing several rounds. The shooting happened three days after the cathedral bombing in Makassar.
On 1 October 2022,a fatal human crush occurred following an association football match at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency,East Java,Indonesia. Following a loss by home side Arema to their rivals Persebaya Surabaya,around 3,000 Arema supporters invaded the pitch. Police said that the rioting supporters attacked the players and the team officials. The police attempted to protect the players and stop the riot,but the crowds clashed with security forces. In response,riot police units deployed tear gas,which triggered a stampede of people in the stadium trying to escape the gas. A crush formed at one exit,resulting in fans being asphyxiated.
In early 2023,rumours regarding child kidnappings across Indonesia triggered a series of mass hysteria and vigilante actions across the country. The rumours were mostly spread through WhatsApp,Facebook,and TikTok which,according to authorities,were mostly fake. The rumours resulted in injuries and fatalities in some places,with the most severe cases resulting in a riot in Wamena which killed twelve people;and in Sorong,where a woman was burned alive. In other places such as North Musi Rawas Regency,five men were injured after being beaten by a mob who accused them of kidnapping;and in Surabaya,where a mentally ill person was also beaten to death by a mob.
