Budi Gunadi Sadikin (born 6 May 1964) [1] is an Indonesian politician. He currently serves as Minister of Health since 2020. [2] [3] He is only the second Health Minister not to graduate from a medical school, and the first since Mananti Sitompul. [4]

Early life and education

In 1988, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Science from the Bandung Institute of Technology. [5]

Professional career

Budi started his career as IT staff at IBM Asia Pacific in Tokyo from 1988 until 1994. Then, he became a banker as General Manager of Electronic Banking - Chief GM Jakarta - Chief GM HR PT Bank Bali Tbk (1994-1999), and Senior VP Consumer and Commercial Banking ABN Amro Bank Indonesia & Malaysia (1999-2004). [6]

He also served as Executive VP Consumer Banking Bank Danamon (2004-2006), Director of Micro and Retail Banking Bank Mandiri (2006-2013), and President Director of PT Bank Mandiri Tbk (2013-2016). [3] [6]

Starting in 2016, Budi began to enter the government as Special Staff to the Minister of State Owned Enterprises (2016-2017). [6]

In 2017, he was appointed as President Director of PT Inalum. In his era, Inalum bought 51 percent of PT Freeport Indonesia. [6] [7]

He was then appointed as Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises I since November 2019. [6]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, his office set up a special unit to deal with flagging oxygen supplies for medical use. [8]

Afterwards he studied Radiology in Airlangga University and obtained his doctoral degree in Hasanuddin University at 2013. He is a radiologist. He is the fourth Health Minister of Indonesia to have come from the military and the first since Suwardjono Surjaningrat, who was in office between 1978 and 1988. As Suwardjono and the two earlier officers were 2-star generals, Terawan, a 3-star general, is the highest-ranked military officer to have ever held this ministerial office.

It was confirmed to have spread to Indonesia on 2 March 2020, after a dance instructor and her mother tested positive for the virus. Both were infected from a Japanese national.

Mananti Sitompul, was a Christian Indonesian politician from North Sumatra. A member of the Indonesian Christian Party (Parkindo), he served in several national cabinets during the Indonesian National Revolution. Born in Pahae, North Tapanuli, he studied at the Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng (THB), and graduated as a civil engineer in 1939. Subsequently, he worked at the Waterloopkundig Laboratory and later at the Waterstaatsdienst. During the Japanese occupation, he became the head of the Provinciale Waterstaat of West Java, before he moved to Sukabumi and later Jakarta, to work in the Public works office.
