JP Ganga Path (also called Loknayak Ganga Path or Patna Marine Drive) is a 4 lane expressway along the Ganga river in Patna, Bihar, India. [1] [2] It is being jointly constructed by the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) and the Government of Bihar. [3] [4] Jp Ganga Path (Patna Marine Drive) was planned to ensure a smooth flow of traffic between east Patna and west Patna, and ease the traffic congestion at Ashok Rajpath. [5] [6]
The first phase of the expressway was open to the public on 24 June 2022. [7] The second phase of Patna Marine Drive was inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on 14 August 2023. [8] [9]
It was approved in August 2007 and the ground breaking ceremony was held on 11 October 2013 by the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar. [10] It was expected to be completed by the end of 2022. [11] [12] On 24 June 2022, the first phase of the expressway was inaugurated by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. [7]
Ganga Path project which has been in pipeline for many years, dubbed as the Marine Drive of Patna, the Ganga Path or Ganga Expressway will connect Digha to Kacchi Dargah along the river Ganges. The tender for the same is likely to be issued by the second week of May by Bihar State Road Development Corporation and the contract will be finalized by June. [13] [14]
It is a 20.5-kilometre-long (12.7 mi) road built between Digha and Deedarganj in Patna at a cost of Rs.2234.46 crores.
The first phase of the project between Digha to Patna Medical College and Hospital , covering 6.5 km long was inaugurated on 24 June 2022. [15] The road has been constructed on 13 metre high dam.
The second phase from Patna Medical College Hospital to Gai Ghat, covering 5 km was inaugurated on 14 August 2023. The second phase extends the road by 18 km to Fatuha. [16] The Ganga Path is 6.5 km at-grade level and 14 km elevated. [17]
The third phase of project from Gai Ghat to Deedarganj is under construction. The stretch from Gai Ghat to Kangan ghat was inaugurated on 11 July 2024. [18] [19] [20]
The total cost involved in this mega project is ₹5600 crore, having time interval for its completion to be four years. After the private investors failed to appear on the horizon, the State government itself decided to go ahead with the project. The Cabinet has given approval to take loan of ₹2000 crore from Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) and the rest amount of ₹1,160 crore is to be raised through the State resources. HUDCO has agreed to provide the loan at a floating interest rate of 10.75%, to be returned in 16 years after completion of the project. Out of the total budget, a sum of ₹2,770 crore will be spent on the construction of road and elevation work and ₹390 crore on land acquisition and utility shifting.
The expressway will ensure a smooth flow of traffic between east to west Patna, and also ease the traffic congestion at Ashok Rajpath. [21] There will be nine points on the expressway connected to Ashok Rajpath. It will be a toll road. The much-anticipated project will give breath to the heavily congested roads of east to west Patna. It will not only give a beautiful riverfront but will also give a boost to the economic activities of the area. [22]
It is planned as 4.5 km long riverfront along Ganges. [24] 20 ghats were to be developed along a 2.3-km promenade with four cultural centres on the stretch of Patna riverfront. 4.5-metre wide esplanade has to stretch from Collectorate Ghat to Adalat Ghat (470m), Adalat Ghat to Gandhi Ghat (1132mt), Gandhi Ghat to Rani Ghat (384m) and — after a gap of few ghats — Bhadra Ghat to Nauzar Ghat (330m). This project is part of National Ganga River Basin Authority.
Danapur is an Indian satellite town and one of six subdivisions (tehsil) in the Patna district of Bihar state. The population was 182,241 at the 2011 India Census. It is part of the Patna Metropolitan Region. It was constituted as a municipality in 1887. Danapur is also a shelter and hatchery for the migrating Siberian cranes, locally called Janhgil. They visit every year during the monsoon season for breeding and leave this place before the start of the winter season. The Sub-Area Headquarters of Bihar and Jharkhand is situated in the army cantonment here.
Mahatma Gandhi Setu is a bridge over the river Ganges in Bihar, India, connecting Patna in the south to Hajipur in the north. Its length of 5,750 metres (18,860 ft) makes it the fourth-longest river bridge in India. It was inaugurated in May 1982 in a ceremony in Hajipur by then-prime minister Indira Gandhi. From 1982 to 2017, Mahatma Gandhi Setu remained the longest bridge in India. Later, the Gandhi Setu rehabilitation project was undertaken to install triangular steel trusses on Mahatma Gandhi Setu.
Patna Medical College and Hospital was established in 1925 and originally known as Prince of Wales Medical College, is a medical college located in Patna, the state capital of Bihar, India.
The Digha–Sonpur bridge or J. P. Setu is a rail-cum-road steel truss bridge across river Ganga, connecting Digha Ghat in Patna and Pahleja Ghat in Sonpur. It is named after Indian independence activist Jayaprakash Narayan. It provides easy roadway and railway link between north and south Bihar.
Bailey Road is a road and neighbourhood in Patna, India. It connects Patna with Danapur. It roughly starts from Income Tax Golambar and ends in Danapur, running through the heart of the city. It is one of the most important roads in the city. Many important landmarks like Patna High Court, Patna Women's College, Patna Secretariat, Patna Zoo, Patna Airport, Bihar Museum etc. are situated beside or near to this road. Bailey Road was officially renamed as Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg, but this road is still widely known as Bailey Road. Now, this road has been renamed as Nehru Path by the government of Bihar. This area is served by Shastrinagar Police Station of Patna Police.
Patliputra Junction, Station code (PPTA), is a railway station in the Rukanpura area in the West End of Patna, Bihar. The station, which is governed by East Central Railway and managed by Danapur railway division, lies on the Patna–Sonepur–Hajipur section. Located 12 kilometres north-west of Patna Junction, it has primarily been developed to ease pressure on the city's other two railway stations, through which roughly 350 trains pass daily. It is located near Bailey Road, an important western thoroughfare in Patna. Patliputra junction has become the fourth terminal of the Danapur railway division after Patna Junction, Danapur station and Rajendranagar Terminal.
Ashok Rajpath is a road in Patna, the capital of Bihar. It is named after Ashoka, an Indian emperor of the Maurya Dynasty who ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent from ca. 269 BCE to 232 BCE. It connects Patna with Patna city or Patna Sahib. Starting roughly from Golghar, it run parallel to the river Ganges, and terminates at the Didarganj. It is a busy road owing to the presence of markets on one side and educational institute of Patna University on the other side.
The Bakhtiyarpur–Tajpur Bridge, currently under construction, will span the river Ganges, connecting Bakhtiyarpur in Patna and Tajpur in Samastipur in the Indian state of Bihar. Upon completion in Dec 2026, the bridge will provide an easy roadway link between the northern and southern parts of Bihar.
The state of Bihar has a number of bridges, extending from few metres to a few kilometres. The history of long bridges goes back to the British Empire when the site for the Koilwar bridge was surveyed in 1851. Since then a number of small and large bridges have crept up. Some are even largest of their kind. Mahatma Gandhi Setu, joining Patna and Hajipur was India's longest river bridge from 1982 to 2017.
Arrah–Chhapra Bridge is the longest multi-span extradosed bridge in the world with a main bridge length of 1,920 m (6,300 ft). The bridge crosses over the Ganges River in India, connecting Arrah in Bhojpur district to Chhapra in Saran district of Bihar state. The bridge provides a roadway link between the northern and southern parts of Bihar. The bridge opened for public use on 11 June 2017.
Purvanchal Expressway is a 340.8 km long, 6-lane wide access-controlled expressway in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The expressway connects Chand Saray village near Gosainganj in Lucknow district with Haydaria village on NH-31 in Ghazipur district. It is developed by the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA). The Purvanchal Expressway has a 3.2 km long airstrip at Akhalkiri Karwat village near Kurebhar in Sultanpur district for emergency landing of aircraft. The construction work was started by the UPEIDA on 10 October 2018 and was inaugurated and opened to the public on 16 November 2021.
The Kacchi Dargah–Bidupur Bridge, currently under construction, will span the river Ganges, connecting Kacchi Dargah in Patna and Bidupur in Hajipur in the Indian state of Bihar. Upon completion in 2025, the bridge will provide an easy roadway link between the northern and southern parts of Bihar and will connect two major national highways, linking NH 31 to NH 322.
The 350th Prakash Parv or birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh ji was celebrated in January 2017 in Patna, India. 2017 is the year of the 350th anniversary of the 10th Sikh Guru, a spiritual master, warrior, poet and philosopher. At the date of this anniversary, a number of events was organized on the occasion in Patna marking a grand celebration in their history.
The Sabhyata Dwar or Civilization Gate is a sandstone arch monument located on the banks on River Ganga in the city of Patna in the Indian state of Bihar. The Sabhyata Dwar is built with a Mauryan-style architecture with a purpose to show the ancient glory of Pataliputra and traditions and culture of the state of Bihar. The monument was first envisioned by the former Lieutenant General Srinivas Kumar Sinha. The 32 metres (105 ft) high structure is taller than Gateway of India by 6 metres (20 ft) and was built at a cost of ₹ 5 crore. The monument is spread over an area of one acre within the campus of Samrat Ashok International Convention Centre. The arches of the Dwar contain inscriptions attributed to Megasthenes, Ashoka, Buddha and Mahavira. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the monument on 21 May 2018.
Patna–Digha Ghat line was a railway line connecting Patna Junction and Digha Ghat railway station in the Indian city of Patna. It was constructed by the British in 1862, and functioned intermittently. The railway line was revived in 1962–63 and 2004 by the then Indian Railway Ministers, Jagjivan Ram and Lalu Prasad Yadav, respectively. Passenger train operations on the route were economically unviable due to low ridership. However, trains continued to run on the railway line in order to prevent encroachment.
The Outer Ring Road is a proposed 140 kilometer, 6-lane ring road expressway encircling the capital city of Patna, Bihar, India.
Ganga Water Lift Project is a multi-phase drinking water project in Bihar, India. It is the ambitious project of Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar to supply safe drinking water to the water-alarmed towns like Gaya, Rajgir and Nawada, located in southern part of the state through pipeline by lifting water from Ganga river near Hathidah Ghat in Mokama in Patna district. The cost of first phase of this project was initially approved with ₹2,836 crore (US$340 million), the cost was later revised to ₹4,174 crore (US$500 million). Government of Bihar approved the first phase of the coveted Ganga Water Lift Scheme (GWLS) of Water Resource Department (WRD) in December 2019. Ganga Water Lift Project is part of Nitish Kumar's ‘Jal-Jivan-Hariyali Abhiyan' which is aimed to minimize the bad effects of climate change.
Chhapra–Hajipur Highway is an under-construction 66.74-kilometre-long (41.47 mi) road in Bihar. It is restored as part of old National Highway 19 (NH 19) and is planned between Chhapra and Hajipur in the first phase. The first phase is planned to be completed by June 2023. In the second phase, the road will be further extended to Patna. The project is executed by National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). NHAI has allotted the construction work to a concessionaire on the basis of build–operate–transfer (BOT). This is a four-lane road and will become part of Hajipur-Chhapra-Ghazipur four-lane Highway (NH 31). The need for this Chhapra-Hajipur highway connecting Chhapra divisional headquarters with the capital Patna has increased after the commissioning of J.P. Setu and Arrah–Chhapra Bridge. Along with this, the importance of this road has increased due to the construction of Sherpur-Dighwara Loknayak Ganga Path will increase
Patli Path is an elevated road in Patna, the capital of Bihar. It was inaugurated by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on 30 November 2020. At the time of inauguration of this elevated road, it was the longest elevated road of Bihar and seventh in India.
Danapur-Bihta Elevated Road is a proposed elevated road in Bihar. The 21 km road will be four-lane and is claimed to be the longest elevated road in East India. The road will have a 600-metre-long tunnel for entry of vehicles in the proposed civil enclave at Bihta Air Force Station. The project also proposed construction of ramps at four places- Danapur, Shivala Mor, Bihta airport link and Bihta-Sarmera bypass. The road will connect Patna to Bihta Airport via the Danapur railway station and Shivala Chowk.
