The National Students' Union of India(NSUI) is the student wing of the Indian National Congress (INC or Congress). It was established on the 9th of April, 1971, founded by Indira Gandhi after merging the Kerala Students Union and the West Bengal State Chhatra Parishad to form a national students' organisation. Varun Choudhary is current National President of NSUI. [2] [3]

In order to become a member of NSUI, one must be under 27 years of age, must be a student, must be a citizen of India, must not be part of any other political organisation and must not have been convicted of any criminal activity in past. [4] NSUI categorizes its members into "Primary Members" and "Active Members". An aspiring member who applies for NSUI Membership, becomes a Primary member after the organisation's scrutiny process.[ citation needed ]
In June 2022 during the Karnataka textbook controversy the Congress students' wing NSUI (National Students Union of India) protested against the saffronisation of school textbooks. As a symbolic protest they burnt an underwear outside the Home of Education Minister BC Nagesh. They set fire to a pair of khaki shorts similar to the short in the uniform of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) members. [5]
The BJP complained to the police accusing the NSUI activists of trying to burn the minister's house down. Siddaramaiah said, "During a protest, we symbolically burnt one underwear - just one underwear. But the police and government made it a big issue and said we are trying to burn the house... So let's start a chaddi-burning campaign,". The Congress launched a "burn-the-chaddi" campaign and Siddaramaiah announced that, as a sign of protest against RSS ‘chaddis’ would be burnt. [5]
In November 2013, two members of the NSUI were injured by police as they attempted to submit a memorandum to the district magistrate. [6] In late November, the NSUI filed a complain with the police against Madhu Kishwar, a writer who ousted the journalist that had been allegedly sexually assaulted by Tarun Tejpal. [7] NSUI national secretary Akshay Kumar, who was also elected as the joint secretary of Delhi University Students' Union in 2010, allegedly submitted fake documents to secure admission in the Department of Buddhist Studies. An FIR (first information report) was filed against him by the Department of Buddhist Studies. [8] In 2018, NSUI president Fairoz Khan stepped down from the post following the charges of sexual harassment against him. [9]

Prayagraj arresting : On 26 July 2022, NSUI workers protested vehemently at Allahabad University on Tuesday after the ED again called out Sonia Gandhi in the National Herald issue. Police arrested 15 protesters during the march. Those arrested are mainly Akhilesh Yadav, Himanshu Pachauri, Harkesh Kumar Harry, Amit Dwivedi, Satyam Kushwaha, Adarsh Singh Bhadauria, Durgesh Kumar Singh Murari, Rishabh Pandey, Akshay Krantiveer, Ajay Pandey, Ravish Mishra, Shashank Dwivedi, Abhishek Shukla, Vivek Verma included.
Varanasi attack : Valay Dutt Bajpai, NSUI Uttar Pradesh East General Secretary, ABVP students attacked the hostel of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth because the ABVP was wiped out in the student union of Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth.
Rahul Rajiv Gandhi is an Indian politician and a member of the Indian Parliament who represents the constituency of Wayanad, Kerala, in the Lok Sabha. He previously represented the constituency of Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. He is a member of the main opposition party, the Indian National Congress, and was the party president from December 2017 to July 2019. Gandhi is the chairperson of the Indian Youth Congress, the National Students Union of India and a trustee of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust. He is the son of the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi.
The Indian Youth Congress is the youth wing of the Indian National Congress party. The Indian Youth Congress was a department of the Indian National Congress from the period just after the Partition of India in 1947 until the late 1960s. While prime minister, Indira Gandhi gave the Youth Congress a new dimension by establishing it as a frontal organisation of the Congress Party, with the objective of doing social work and arguing against right-wing parties. Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was the first elected president of the Indian Youth Congress; Chandy Oommen was the National outreach Chairman he later became Minister of Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary affairs in the Indian cabinet. Narayan Dutt Tiwari was the first President. Jitin Prasada was also the president of the Indian youth congress.
Jawaharlal Nehru University is a public research university located in Delhi, India. It was established in 1969 and named after Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister. The university is known for leading faculties and research emphasis on social sciences and applied sciences.
The Students' Federation of India (SFI) is an Indian left-wing student organisation that claims to be politically aligned to the ideologies of freedom, democracy, anti-hindu and socialism. Currently, V. P. Sanu and Mayukh Biswas are elected as the All India President and General Secretary, respectively. It is the students wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) (transl. All India Students' Council) is a right-wing all India student organisation affiliated to the Hindu nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
All India Students' Association (AISA) is a left wing student organisation in India. It describes itself as "the voice of the radical students' movement" and is affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation. The association was previously affiliated to the IPF. The association was founded in Allahabad on 9 August 1990 with the merger of several left wing students organisations across India. AISA have organisational presence in the states and union territories of Delhi, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura, etc. Nilasis Bose is the National President of AISA and Prasenjeet Kumar is its National General Secretary.
Ashok Tanwar is an Indian politician associated with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and former President of Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, Member of Parliament from Sirsa and Secretary, All India Congress Committee. He was also a former president of Indian Youth Congress and NSUI. He was the youngest person to become the president of Indian Youth Congress.
Fairoz Khan is an activist and former president of the National Students' Union of India. On 11 April 2022, Fairoz Khan has been appointed as Working President of Pradesh Youth Congress J&K.
Panjab University Campus Students Council or PUCSC is Students' union consisting of the departmental representatives and other office bearers like President, Vice-President, Secretary and Joint-Secretary along with 123 Departmental Representatives (DRs) directly elected by the students from the various teaching departments on the Panjab University, Chandigarh campus. Furthermore, these elected office-bearers and department representatives elect the remaining five members of the executive of the Council. The Dean Student Welfare is ex officio Chairman of the Council. Elections are held every year in August–September months. There is ban on property defacement for clean elections.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union or JNUSU is a students' union at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
On 9 February 2016, some students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) held a protest on their campus against the capital punishment meted out to the 2001 Indian Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, and Kashmiri separatist Maqbool Bhat. The organizers of the event were former members of the Democratic Students' Union (DSU). The event was held despite the university administration withdrawing permission for the event shortly before it was due to begin, due to protests by members of the student union of ABVP. The event saw clashes between various student groups. A video was circulated by Indian news channel Zee news in which a small group of individuals, whom a later University investigation described as outsiders to the university wearing masks, shouted "anti-India" slogans.
Najeeb Ahmed was a student of JNU New Delhi, India, who went missing from his hostel on the university campus under suspicious circumstances on 15 October 2016.
Prem Chandra Mishra is an Indian politician and member of the Bihar Legislative Council. In the elections on 23 March, 11 candidates were elected unopposed. He is also the AICC media panelist.
Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students' Association (BAPSA) is a student organization formed on 15 November 2014 at Jawaharlal Nehru University on the anniversary of Birsa Munda's birth. It claims to work for student rights and the issues affecting Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, OBCs and other minority groups. BAPSA says it stands for assertion, follows Ambedkarite ideology and is critical of both left and right-wing forces on campus. BAPSA is also active in Central University of Gujarat.
Amrish Ranjan Pandey is a youth leader and is currently officiating as the National Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress. He was appointed the National Secretary of IYC in March 2020 and is currently the IYC In-charge for the State of West Bengal and was given the charge in July 2020, as West Bengal Assembly polls are also approaching. He is a practising lawyer in the Delhi-NCR region.
The Banaras Hindu University women's rights protest is a series of events beginning with a Banaras Hindu University student's September 2017 complaint that the university administration treated women unfairly.
Angellica Aribam is an Indian political activist working on issues of gender, race, and the democratization of politics. She is the founder of Femme First Foundation, a non-govt organization working to promote women's political leadership in India. Aribam was also a National General Secretary of the National Students' Union of India, the students' wing of the Indian National Congress.
The Citizenship Amendment Act (Bill) protests, also known as the CAA Protest, CAB Protest or CAA and NRC protests, occurred after the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was enacted by the Government of India on 12 December 2019. The move sparked a widespread national and overseas ongoing protests against the act and its associated proposals of the National Register of Citizens (NRC). The protests first began in Assam and spread swiftly in other states such as Delhi, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura on 4 December 2019. Protests broke out rapidly across the country, although the concerns of the protesters vary.
On 5 January 2020, more than 50 masked people armed with rods, sticks and acid attacked the campus of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, and injured more than 39 students and teachers. Many students received serious injuries. Professors who tried to intervene and protect the students, as well as ambulances carrying injured individuals, were attacked. Eyewitnesses stated that police within the campus did not intervene to stop the mob. After attacking residents of the university campus for three hours, the mob escaped; none of its members was arrested or detained. All 36 students who were injured and admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi (AIIMS) were discharged within 24 hours.
The Karnataka textbook controversy arose in May-June 2022 after Government of Karnataka made changes to the books used by the government schools in Karnataka. They have been accused of reflecting the political views of BJP, the party in power in the Government of Karnataka.
