The Nissan Crew is a mid-size sedan manufactured by Nissan between 1993 and 2009, sold only in Japan and mostly used as taxicabs, driver training, and by law enforcement agencies as police cars. [1] Its FR layout and simple construction created a steady following converting Crews into drifting and tuning cars. [2]
Its main competitor was the Toyota Comfort. [1] An indication of its intended market as a taxi is that the b-pillar is set 5 cm (2 in) further forward on the passenger (left) side, making the driver's side door and the left rear door larger than the others since these two would see the majority of use. [2] The rear left door was also available with power opening.
Production of the Nissan Crew (K30) started at Nissan Shatai in July 1993. [3] While the majority of Crews were used as taxis, a civilian model was available between 1994 and 2002 known as "Crew Saloon". The Crew used a body pan derived from the Y31 Nissan Cedric, although the front end was mostly borrowed from the C32 Laurel. [2] The Crew Saloon, aimed at private buyers (but still available with a power rear door) was built between January 1994 and June 2002. The Crew taxi was built until August 2009, with a total of 52,124 cars sold.
Autech has been involved in modifying Crews for paratransit taxi (福祉タクシー) models where the front passenger seat may rotate to allow a disabled passenger to sit in front. [4]
In addition to taxi models, there were also special paratransit models, driving school models, patrol cars, and other specialty vehicles available.
The typical engine was the LPG-powered NA20P, but the RD28 diesel was also available (E-L and GLX). [5] Police and driver training cars were also offered with the RB20E engine. Equipment levels started with the very spartan E, followed by the E-L, GL, and GLX. While the E and E-L were mostly sold to taxi companies, the GL and GLX targeted owner-operators. As such, they were available with body-colored bumpers, chrome trim, aluminium wheels and other comfort and appearance items.
Introduced in January 1994, the Crew Saloon was aimed at private buyers rather than institutional and commercial use. The range consisted of the LS Saloon-F, LS Saloon, LX Saloon and the more expensive LX Saloon G Type. [6] At the time of introduction, there was also a somewhat lower cost B Type model of the LX Saloon, but this was discontinued in February 1995 when the G Type was introduced. Most Crew Saloons were equipped with the 2-liter six-cylinder RB20E engine, but the RD28 diesel was also available (only on the LX Saloon and the later LX Saloon G Type). Sales targets at the time of introduction were 300 per month of the gasoline model, and 50 per month for the diesels; this had dropped to 200 per month of all models by 1995 and to 100 per month by 1998. In August 1999, the LS models were dropped from the lineup.
The Crew forms the basis for the Galue sedan by Mitsuoka, produced from 1996 to 2001. [7] [8] It shares the same RB20E engine and the design was inspired by the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. [9] It was originally sold simply as the Galue, but after the introduction of the Cedric-based Galue II in 1999 the original model became the Galue I to help keep them apart.
The initial Crew lineup of July 1993 consisted of Taxi and Driver Training cars with the LPG-powered, four-cylinder, 2-liter NA20P engine or the six-cylinder, diesel RD28 with 94 PS (69 kW). The NA20P produces 82 PS (60 kW) in the initial specifications; in June 1998 it received a new catalyst and redesigned combustion chambers, cutting NOX emissions, improving fuel economy, and bumping power to 85 PS (63 kW). [5] In August 1999, the diesel engine was upgraded to the 18-valve, electronically controlled RD28E unit with 100 PS (74 kW) but it was no longer offered on the GLX model. [10] In April 1994, three months after the introduction of the RB20E in the Crew Saloon, this engine was also installed in the patrol car (a six-cylinder engine was generally required for patrol cars) and then to the driving school cars. In June 2002, the gasoline and diesel options were discontinued, leaving only the LPG-powered NA20P and marking the end of the patrol car as well as the Crew Saloon.
The Crew Saloon was offered with the RB20E inline-six with 130 PS (96 kW) and a 2.8 litre RD28 inline-six diesel engine. [2] It's mated to either a 4-speed automatic transmission or a 5-speed manual transmission. [6] Introduced in January 1994, only the RB20E was on offer at first. In May 1994, the diesel engine became available, initially only on the LX Saloon model. [11] The diesel engine produces the same power in the Saloon as in the commercial models, and was also upgraded to the RD28E in August 1999. [10] The Crew Saloon was discontinued in June 2002.
The Nissan Violet is a model of car that appeared in Japan in 1973, and was exclusive to Japanese Nissan dealerships called Nissan Cherry Store as a larger companion to the Nissan Cherry.
The Mazda Capella, also known as the 626 in Europe, North America and Southeast Asia, is a mid-size car that was manufactured by Mazda from 1970 until 2002. Sold in the Japanese domestic market under the Capella name, the vehicle was also commonly known in other major markets as the Mazda 626. Ford, Mazda's partner at the time, also used the Capella platform to create the Ford Telstar and Ford Probe. 4,345,279 of the 626 and Telstar models were sold worldwide.

The Corona was marketed in the JDM at Toyota's Toyopet Store dealership channels, and the Corona was one of Toyota's first models exported to other global markets, followed by the smaller Toyota Corolla.
The Nissan Bluebird is a compact car produced between 1955 and 2007 with a model name introduced in 1957. It was Nissan's most internationally recognized sedan, known for its dependability and durability in multiple body styles. The Bluebird originated from Nissan's first vehicles, dating to the early 1900s, and its traditional competitor became the Toyota Corona. The Bluebird was positioned to compete with the Corona, as the Corona was developed to continue offering a sedan used as a taxi since the Toyota Crown was growing in size. Every generation of the Bluebird has been available as a taxi, duties that are shared with base level Nissan Cedrics. It is one of the longest-running nameplates from a Japanese automaker. It spawned most of Nissan's products sold internationally, and has been known by a number of different names and bodystyles, including the Auster/Stanza names.
The Nissan Skyline is a brand of automobile originally produced by the Prince Motor Company starting in 1957, and then by Nissan after the two companies merged in 1967. After the merger, the Skyline and its larger counterpart, the Nissan Gloria, were sold in Japan at dealership sales channels called Nissan Prince Shop.
The Nissan Elgrand is a minivan manufactured by Nissan Shatai for Nissan since 1997, available in three generations, with model codes E50 (1997–2002), E51 (2002–2010), and E52 (2010–present). The E50 Elgrand was also configured and produced as a light commercial vehicle from 1998 to 2017.
The Nissan Laurel is a two- and four-door sedan manufactured and marketed by Nissan from 1968 to 2002. Later generations added all-wheel-drive along with turbocharged engines. Introduced in 1968 as a new model positioned above the Datsun Bluebird 510, the Laurel offered the luxury of the Nissan Gloria A30 in a shorter wheelbase, and has always been the luxury version of the Skyline range for all generations, sharing engines, suspensions and handling dynamics of the popular performance coupe and sedan while having a longer wheelbase.
The Nissan Avenir is a line of station wagons beginning production in May 1990 by Nissan of Japan, with the budget oriented delivery van starting out as the Avenir Cargo, then being renamed the Nissan Expert in 1999. The Avenir replaced the long-serving Nissan Bluebird wagon/delivery van. It was a larger companion to the Nissan Wingroad/Nissan AD van. The 1999 Expert also assumed the load carrying duties of the discontinued Nissan Cedric and Gloria delivery vans. The Avenir appeared after the Subaru Legacy wagon, but before the Toyota Caldina wagon. The Avenir's appearance was not shared with another Nissan sedan, although it was sold as the estate version of the Primera in European markets.
The Gloria is a large luxury car made from 1959 by the Prince Motor Company, and later by Nissan Motors since its merger with the former - hence being originally marketed as Prince Gloria and later as Nissan Gloria. Initially based on the smaller Prince Skyline, the Gloria line was merged with Nissan Cedric starting with 1971 models and both continued until 2004, when they were both replaced by Nissan Fuga.
The Nissan Cedric is a large automobile produced by Nissan from 1960 to 2015. It was developed to provide upscale transportation, competing with the Prince Skyline and Gloria which were later merged into the Nissan family. In later years, the Nissan Skyline was positioned as a sports sedan/coupe, whereas the Nissan Gloria was turned into a sporty version of the Cedric.

The Toyota Comfort and the long-wheelbase Toyota Crown Comfort are a line of mid-size sedans produced by Toyota between 1995 and 2018. A platform derivative of the Toyota Mark II (X80), the Comfort was aimed at fleet buyers with a primary focus on taxicab operators. A third model was released in 2001 as the 11th generation Crown Sedan for the Japanese market only. The Crown Sedan was also aimed at fleet buyers, as a high end taxi or for corporate use.

The Nissan Sylphy is a compact car produced by the Japanese car maker Nissan since 2000 as the successor to the Nissan Pulsar. The Sylphy has also been marketed in export markets under several other nameplates, including Pulsar, Almera, Sunny and Sentra. For the third-generation model (B17) introduced in 2012, the Sylphy model was merged with the B17 Sentra, meaning it is no longer a standalone model.

The Mitsuoka Nouera is a mid size saloon from the Japanese car brand Mitsuoka. The Nouera is a 4-door saloon model, based on the Honda Accord. The front and rear styling is modified: a chrome grille and twin circular headlamps have been added at the front to give the car classic English looks, and differently shaped rear lights have been used. The interior is similar to the Accord's, with wood trim and leather seats available.
The Nissan NA family of straight-four engines is a series of engines manufactured by Nissan. It is the replacement of the Z series, on which its design is based, and is mostly used in commercial vehicles due to its use of Liquefied petroleum gas for fuel on engines with a "P" suffix code.
The Nissan Primera is a large family car which was produced by the Japanese automaker Nissan from 1990 to 2007, for the markets in Japan and Europe. In Japan, it replaced the Auster/Stanza, and was exclusive to Nissan Prince Store locations. In North America, it was the entry level luxury sports sedan for the Infiniti brand. The word "primera" in Spanish means "first", in its female form.
The Ford Mondeo I (first generation) is a mid-size car that was produced by Ford, beginning on 23 November 1992, with sales beginning on 22 March 1993. It is also known as the Mk I Mondeo; the 1996 facelift versions are usually designated Mk II. Available as a four-door saloon, a five-door hatchback, and a five-door estate, all models for the European market were produced at Ford's plant in the Belgian city of Genk. In December 1992, Autocar published a section on the Mondeo, and how it would conquer rivals.
