The Nissan KR engine family consists of three and four-cylinder all-aluminum turbocharged gasoline engines in both 12-valve and 16-valve versions with a variable compression ratio and variable valve timing developed by Nissan.

The KH5T is a 1.5 L (1461 cc) DIG-T (Direct Injection Gasoline-Turbocharged) inline-3 12-valve engine, with a bore x stroke of 79.7 mm × 81.1 mm (3.14 in × 3.19 in).[ clarification needed ]. Power output is 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp) and 240 N⋅m (177 lb⋅ft) of torque.The variation in compression ratio ranges between 8:1 and 14:1. This is achieved by the movement of an actuator which changes the length of the piston stroke according to the demand for power.
Applications:
The KR15DDT VC-Turbo 3 cylinder engine is firstly introduced in the fourth-generation X-Trail. [1] Like the name VC-Turbo suggests, this engine uses a variable compression ratio that allows for high power output and high fuel efficiency at the same time. Due to this, this engine won Nissan the 19th trophy in the Wards 10 Best Engines and Propulsion systems awards of 2022; judge Drew Winter described it as “Very smooth, exceptionally quiet during idle, pleasant to drive in traffic or on the highway”, among other comments from judges such as “This engine inspires words that never have been uttered in the same sentence as 3-cylinder engine”.
Applications:
The KR20DDET was announced at the 2016 Paris Motor Show as the VC Turbo which had Nissan's new variable compression technology. The engine was introduced to Nissan's production cars in 2019 in the Infiniti QX50 and the Nissan Altima replacing the previous V6 options. [2] It was touted as the world's first production-ready variable compression ratio engine. [3]
Applications:
On December 13, 2023, American agency NHTSA opened an investigation into customer complaints of engine failure in the Nissan's KR15DDT and KR20DDET engines, the former being used since the Nissan Rogue update in 2022. The complaints allege engine failure, loss of motive power, engine knock, or noise and/or metal chunks and shavings being found in the oil pan of vehicles with these engines. [6] The cause appears to be seizures and damages to the main bearings and L-links. [7] Nissan stated that they are attempting to address these failures by changing their manufacturing process. [7]
The GM High Feature engine is a family of modern DOHC V6 engines produced by General Motors. The series was introduced in 2004 with the Cadillac CTS and the Holden Commodore (VZ).

The VQ is a family of V6 automobile petrol engines developed by Nissan and produced in displacements varying from 2.0 L to 4.0 L. Designed to replace the VG series, the all-aluminium 4-valve per cylinder DOHC design debuted with Nissan's EGI/ECCS sequential multi-point fuel injection (MPFI) system. The 6G7 series or Cyclone V6 engine is a series of V6 piston engines from Mitsubishi Motors. Five displacement variants were produced from 1986 to 2021, with both SOHC and DOHC, naturally aspirated and turbo charged layouts. While MIVEC variable valve timing has also been implemented in some versions the 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 L versions were also available with gasoline direct injection. The Renault-Nissan MR engine family consists of straight-four 16-valve all-aluminium and water cooled automobile engines with variable valve timing co-developed by Renault and Nissan. Renault calls it the M engine. Other noteworthy features of this engine family include acoustically equal runner lengths and a tumble control valve for the intake manifold, a "silent" timing chain, mirror finished crankshaft and camshaft journals, and offset cylinder placement in an attempt for increased efficiency.
Variable compression ratio (VCR) is a technology to adjust the compression ratio of an internal combustion engine while the engine is in operation. This is done to increase fuel efficiency while under varying loads. Variable compression engines allow the volume above the piston at top dead centre to be changed. Higher loads require lower ratios to increase power, while lower loads need higher ratios to increase efficiency, i.e. to lower fuel consumption. For automotive use this needs to be done as the engine is running in response to the load and driving demands. The 2019 Infiniti QX50 is the first commercially available vehicle that uses a variable compression ratio engine.
Barra is a name for an engine range created by Ford Australia, including the inline-6 and unrelated SOHC V8 in the Ford Australia Falcon between 2002 and 2016. The inline-6 engines are unique to the Australian manufactured Falcon and Territory and were developed and manufactured in Geelong, Victoria. The Barra was first introduced in the BA Falcon, named after the "Barramundi" code name used during the development of the BA update engine. The V8 engine, from Windsor, Ontario, were discontinued with the FG model whereas the I6 engines continued production until 26 September 2016, coinciding with the end of production of the Falcon and Territory on 7 October.
The Infiniti QX50, marketed also until 2013 as the Infiniti EX and Nissan Skyline Crossover, is a front- or all-wheel drive, five passenger, five-door compact luxury crossover SUV, manufactured and marketed by Infiniti, Nissan's luxury division over three generations: one generation as the EX followed by two QX50 generations.
The Mazda L-series is a mid-sized inline 4-cylinder gasoline piston engine designed by Mazda as part of their MZR family, ranging in displacement from 1.8 to 2.5 liters. Introduced in 2001, it is the evolution of the cast-iron block F-engine. It was co-developed with Ford, who owned a controlling stake in Mazda at the time. Ford uses it as their 1.8 L to 2.5 L Duratec world engine and holds a license to develop engines based on the L-series in perpetuity.
The V9X is a common rail 65 degree V6 24-valve DOHC turbo-diesel developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and first installed in the Renault Laguna in 2009. It was subsequently made available for both longitudinal-engine vehicles including Nissan Pathfinder, Nissan Navara, Infiniti FX, Infiniti EX, and Infiniti M and transverse-engine vehicles including Renault Latitude and Laguna Coupé.
The Suzuki R engine is an inline-three engine that has been produced by Suzuki since 2011. Initially introduced in the third-generation MR Wagon, and intended as a replacement for the K6A engine, the R engine has since been used in various Suzuki's, such as the Alto, the Wagon R, and the Carry.

All engines have aluminium cylinder blocks with three or four cylinders in-line. Cylinder heads have two overhead camshafts, driven by chain, and four valves per cylinder. Fuel is gasoline/petrol, metered by multipoint fuel injection or direct injection. Some variants are turbocharged.
