Onambalam is a small inland fishing and trading harbour in Kumbalam, Kollam on the shore of Ashtamudi lake. With improvements in road transport its prominence has reduced after 1980s and now it is used as a fish market and a harbour for small inland fishing vessals. A boat race was organized from here during 28th day of Onam every year in the past but has not been conducted in recent years.

It was an important coir and cashew trading centre, and there was a boat service to Kollam originating from here. As inland water transport lost prominence harbor was abandoned, but certain steps are made to improve inland navigation.A new boat jetty is built by kollam district tourism promotion council and district panchayat. A shrine of Our lady help of Christians is situvated in onambalam landing centre, built by 'salesians of donbosco' fathers who served in kumbalam parish.Beautiful scene of sunset is a unique feature of Onmbalam. Chittumala is a busy road junction where the Kundara - Chittumala, Munroe Island - Chittumala and Chittumala - Bharanikkavu roads meet. It is also famous for the ancient Sri Durga Devi Temple. The name Chittumala means a place surrounded by hills. From Chittumala we can get a good view of the planes of Kallada and Chittumala Chira.
Coir, or coconut fibre, is a natural fibre extracted from the husk of coconut and used in products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes and mattresses. Coir is the fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut. Other uses of brown coir are in upholstery padding, sacking and horticulture. White coir, harvested from unripe coconuts, is used for making finer brushes, string, rope and fishing nets. It has the advantage of not sinking, so can be used in long lengths on deep water without the added weight dragging down boats and buoys.
The cashew tree is a tropical evergreen tree that produces the cashew seed and the cashew apple. It can grow as high as 14 m (46 ft), but the dwarf cashew, growing up to 6 m (20 ft), has proved more profitable, with earlier maturity and higher yields.
A new small boat jetty has been constructed here as part of the Ashtamudi Tourism Circuit.
Kollam
The Kerala backwaters are a network of brackish lagoons and lakes lying parallel to the Arabian Sea coast of Kerala state in southern India, as well as interconnected canals, rivers, and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 kilometres (560 mi) of waterways, and sometimes compared to American bayous. The network includes five large lakes linked by canals, both man made and natural, fed by 38 rivers, and extending virtually half the length of Kerala state. The backwaters were formed by the action of waves and shore currents creating low barrier islands across the mouths of the many rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats range. In the midst of this landscape there are a number of towns and cities, which serve as the starting and end points of backwater cruises.
Ashtamudi Lake, in the Kollam District of the Indian state of Kerala, is the most visited backwater and lake in the state. It possesses a unique wetland ecosystem and a large palm-shaped water body, second only in size to the Vembanad estuary ecosystem of the state. Ashtamudi means 'eight braids' in the local Malayalam language. The name is indicative of the lake's topography with its multiple branches. The lake is also called the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala and is well known for its houseboat and backwater resorts. Ashtamudi Wetland was included in the list of wetlands of international importance, as defined by the Ramsar Convention for the conservation and sustainable utilization of wetlands.

Munroe Island- Mitali or Mundrothuruthu is an inland island located at the confluence of Ashtamudi Lake and the Kallada River, in Kollam district, Kerala, South India. It is a group of eight small islets comprising a total area of about 13.4 sqkm. The island, accessible by road, rail and inland water navigation, is about 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Kollam by road, 38 kilometres (24 mi) north from Paravur, 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) west from Kundara and about 25 kilometres (16 mi) from Karunagapally. As of the 2011 Indian census, the administrative village of Mundrothuruth has a total population of 9599, consisting of 4636 males and 4963 females.
Karunagappalli, also written as Karunagappally, is a municipality in Kollam district of Kerala, India. Karunagappalli is situated 27 km (17 mi) north of Kollam and 60 km (37 mi) south of Alappuzha. Karunagappalli taluk consists of Alappad, Ochira, Adinad, Karunagappally, Thazhava, Pavumba, Thodiyoor, Kallalibhagom, Thevalakkara, Chavara, Neendakara, Clappana, Kulasekharapuram, Thekkumbhagam, Ayanivelikulangara, Panmana and Vadakumthala. The municipality is bound on the north by Kayamkulam, on the east by Kunnathur taluk, on the south by Kollam and on the west by the Arabian Sea. It is the largest town in the district outside of Kollam.
Kundara is a census town in Kerala and is part of Kollam Metropolitan Area, India. Kundara is situated 13 km east of Kollam city, 14 km west of Kottarakkara and 24 km north of Paravur. Kundara is significant for its historic involvement in the Indian independence movement. Kundara was once the industrial hub of Southern Kerala, which was the home to prominent industrial companies including Kerala Electricals Limited, the Aluminium Industry Limited of Kundara, and the Lakshmi Starch company. The West Coast Canal or National Waterway No 3 is a 168-km stretch of this inland navigational route located in Kerala, India and runs from Trivandrum to Kasargod and was declared a National Waterway in 1993. In addition to the main stretch, Champakara and Udyogmandal canals are navigable and connect the industrial centers of Kochi to Kochi port Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) under the Ministry of Shipping is coordinating the task for developing, monitoring and administering national waterways. It is the first National Waterway in the country with 24-hour navigation facilities along the entire stretch.It has been extended to Kozhikode as per National Waterways Act, 2016.
Padappakara is a village in the Kollam district of Kerala, India. The name "Padappakara" derives from the name "Pada-Kappal-Kara", which means "naval ship yard". Between 1400 AD to 1850 AD this place was used as a safe harbour during the monsoon by the wooden merchant and naval ships. Chavara Thekkumbhagom or or is a village in Kollam district in the Indian state of Kerala. It is a traditional village of about 20 km2 area fully surrounded by the Ashtamudi lake and this island is now connected with bridges, one from the south at Neendakara and one to the north at Thevalakara. It is thickly populated place of not less than 15000 and the number of houses not less than 3000.
The President's Trophy Boat Race is a popular boat race held on the Ashtamudi lake in Kollam city on 1 November every year. The day marks the birth of the Indian state of Kerala, known as Kerala Piravi. This is the most popular of the races to be held during the season of the harvest festival, Onam, in Autumn on Ashtamudi Lake in Kollam. There would be races in five categories, namely Chundan Vallam (snake-boats), two grades of Veppu Vallam, and two grades of Iruttukuthi Vallam. Sixteen snake-boats would compete in four heats. The trophy had been instituted in the name of the President of India. President of India will be present to witness the race and would also give away the trophy and cash prize to the winning team. The race will become a part of Kerala's IPL-model boat race league from 2019 onward. The Government of Kerala is planning to make President's Trophy Boat Race as the finishing event of Champions’ Boat League.
