Maguindanao was a province of the Philippines located in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). From 2014 to 2022, its provincial capital was Buluan, but the legislative branch of government, the Maguindanao Provincial Board, convened at the old provincial capitol in Sultan Kudarat. It bordered Lanao del Sur to the north, Cotabato to the east, Sultan Kudarat to the south, and Illana Bay to the west.

The Maguindanaons historically had an independent sultanate known as the Sultanate of Maguindanao which comprises modern day Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao Region and Soccsksargen. The name "Maguindanao/Magindanaw" itself was corrupted by Spanish sources into "Mindanao", which became the name for the entire island of Mindanao.
Hon. Pakung S. Mandudadatu is a Filipino politician who is the provincial governor of Sultan Kudarat since 2016. He also served the same post from 1998 to 2007 and was elected Representative of the 1st district of Sultan Kudarat with Tacurong under the administration's Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino (Kampi) party in 2007. He ran for Mayor in Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat this 2022 with his grandson, the current Mayor of Lutayan, Prince Raden Mangudadatu Sakaluran running for Vice Mayor.
Lake Buluan is a lake located in the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. With an estimated surface area of 61.34 square kilometres (23.68 sq mi), it is the third largest lake in Mindanao, after Lake Lanao and Lake Mainit. It has an average elevation of 4.5 metres (15 ft).
Esmael "Toto" Gaguil Mangudadatu is a Filipino politician who previously served as the representative of Maguindanao's 2nd district from 2019 to 2022. He also served as the governor of Maguindanao from 2010 to 2019. In Buluan town, he served as the mayor from 1998 to 2007, and vice mayor from 2007 to 2010.
Andal "Datu Unsay" Uy Ampatuan Jr. is a Filipino convicted mass murderer and former politician. He is one of the main perpetrators of the Maguindanao massacre along with his father, brothers, and nephews. At the time of the massacre, he was the outgoing mayor of Datu Unsay, Maguindanao and was planning to run for provincial governor, the position his father, Andal Sr., was set to vacate. Esmael Mangudadatu, from a rival political clan, declared his candidacy for the 2010 gubernatorial elections thus challenging Ampatuan for the post. The Ampatuans carried out the massacre to kill Mangudadatu.

Mariam Sangki-Mangudadatu is a Filipina politician who has been the chief executive of Maguindanao del Sur since its division from Maguindanao in 2022. The Maguindanao division plebiscite was held in the province of Maguindanao, Philippines, on September 17, 2022, more than four months after the May 9 national and local elections, after having been postponed from its planned plebiscite in or before August 2021. Gubernatorial elections were held in the Philippines on May 9, 2022. All provinces will elect their provincial governors for three-year terms, who will be inaugurated on June 30, 2022 after their proclamation. Governors that are currently serving their third consecutive terms are prohibited from running as governors.
