Longdale Furnace is an unincorporated community located east of Clifton Forge in Alleghany County, Virginia, United States.
The Port Republic Road Historic District is a national historic district in Waynesboro, Virginia. In 2002, it included 83 buildings deemed to contribute to the historic character of the area, plus one other contributing structure and one contributing site, a foundation. They include buildings such as houses, garages, sheds, commercial buildings, churches, and meeting halls, and structures such as carports and animal sheds. The historically African-American neighborhood developed after the American Civil War. Notable buildings include the Shiloh Baptist Church (1924), the early-20th century Elks and Abraham lodges, the Rosenwald School, which incorporates a 1938-39 auditorium/gymnasium, and Tarry's Hotel (1940).
The Waynesboro Downtown Historic District is a national historic district in Waynesboro, Virginia. In 2002, it included 43 contributing buildings in the compact central business district of Waynesboro. The district includes churches, houses, mixed-use commercial buildings, banks, specialty stores, offices, a hotel, restaurants, and parking lots. Notable buildings include the First National Bank (1908–09), the LB&B Building (1929), and the General Wayne Hotel (1937-1938).
Walker's Creek Presbyterian Church is a historic Presbyterian church and cemetery located near Pearisburg, Giles County, Virginia. The church was built in 1897–1898, and is a one-story, "L"-shaped, frame building in the Gothic Revival style. It features a metal-sheathed gable roof, painted poplar weatherboard siding, a sandstone foundation, and an entry / bell tower. The adjacent church cemetery was established in 1911.
Rosedale Historic District is a national historic district located at Covington, Alleghany County, Virginia. The district encompasses 76 contributing buildings, 1 contributing site, and 2 contributing structures in a predominantly residential section of Alleghany County. The buildings represent a variety of popular architectural styles including the Queen Anne, Greek Revival, and Classical Revival styles. The most notable residence is Rose Dale, constructed in the late-1850s as a plantation house. The Rosedale neighborhood was in established in 1899–1900. In addition to the dwellings a former hospital is situated in the district.
Luke Mountain Historic District is a national historic district located near Covington, Alleghany County, Virginia. The district encompasses 12 contributing buildings, 4 contributing sites, 6 contributing structures, and 1 contributing object on Luke Mountain overlooking the city of Covington. It includes three high style dwellings all built for members of the Luke family, the earliest of which was built in 1919. Other contributing resources include the former farm manager's house; agricultural barns, shelters, greenhouses, and storage buildings; and domestic structures such as swimming pools and garages. Other landscape features include a winding entrance drive, a pair of gateposts, stone-lined drainage ditches, a concrete bridge/culvert over Lindsay Glen Run, a reservoir and private water system, terraced fields, pastureland, formal garden spaces, and walking/hiking paths.
New Castle Historic District is a national historic district located at New Castle in Craig County, Virginia, United States. It encompasses 111 contributing buildings, 2 contributing sites, and 1 contributing object in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of New Castle. The focal point of the district is the Craig County Courthouse. It was built about 1850, and is a temple-form structure with shallow gable roof, a two-story tetrastyle Greek Doric order portico and wooden hexagonal cupola. Associated with the courthouse is the sheriff's house and old jail. Other notable buildings include the Central Hotel, First National Bank Building, Layman Insurance Agency building, Givens-McCartney House (1837), Caldwell-Berger-Lamb House, Bank of New Castle, Farmers and Merchants (F&M) Bank of Craig County (1917-1920), Wagener Brothers Store, Bill Caldwell General Store, George W. Craft, New Castle Methodist Episcopal Church, and Masonic Temple (1940).
Giles County Courthouse is a historic county courthouse located at Pearisburg, Giles County, Virginia. The central block was built in 1836, and is a two-story, rectangular, brick building in the Federal style. It was originally "T"-shaped, but flanking wings were added soon after its original construction. It has a steep, hipped roof with a large octagonal cupola at its apex. A two-story portico was added about 1900, as was a two-story hyphen and three-story rear addition.
Shannon Cemetery is a historic cemetery located near Pearisburg, Giles County, Virginia. It consists of two discontiguous sections, a white section and a black section, located approximately a thousand feet apart at about 1,900 feet in elevation above sea level. The white (south) section was established in 1781 and contains a variety of grave markers including inscribed and uninscribed fieldstones, decoratively carved tombstones of indigenous stone and imported marble, concrete markers, and twentieth century granite monuments. The black (north) section was established in the 19th century and has small uninscribed fieldstone markers and one professionally carved marble headstone. The Shannon Cemetery is believed to be the oldest maintained cemetery in the county.
Andrew Johnston House is a historic home located at Pearisburg, Giles County, Virginia. The central block was built in 1829, and is a two-story, five bay, central-passage plan, brick house over a low basement in the Federal style. It features a one-story, flat-roofed front portico topped by a balustrade and supported by two Ionic order and two Tuscan order columns. Also on the property is a small contributing outbuilding that was built as a doctor's office about 1857. The building houses the Giles County Historical Society, which uses it as a museum and research center.
