Purkazi or Purquazi is a town and a nagar panchayat in Muzaffarnagar district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This town shares its border with the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, serving as a connecting link between the two regions. Located in close proximity to the state border, Purkazi offers easy access to nearby towns and cities in both states.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census, Purkazi has a population [1] of 27,516 which includes 14,332 males and 13,184 females. Children comprise 4,575 of the total population of Purkazi. The Nagar panchayat has 13,244 illiterate people out of which 7,736 are males and 5,508 are females.

Location

Purkazi is located on NH 58, Delhi-Dehradun highway, 56 km from the holy city of Ganges.

Historical significance (Suli Wala Bagh)

The Suli Wala Bagh located in Purkazi is the witness to the mass murder of 500 freedom fighters after the first war of independence in 1857 when the English collector ordered them to be hanged for disobeying British government rule. The citizens of Purkazi are demanding Suli wala Bagh to be declared as a National ‘Shaheed Sthal’. Thousands of people participated in a Tiranga Yatra on 15 August 2018. [2] [3]

Events

The Chairman of Purkazi, Advocate Zaheer Farooqui has been observing Shaheed Diwas (Martyr's Day) [4] every year on 23 March since 2017 to commemorate the sacrifices of Indian freedom fighters.

Zaheer Farooqui also hosted the patriotic program "Ek Shaam Shaheedon Ke Naam" in Purkazi on 23 March 2019. [5] On this occasion, tributes were paid to the freedom fighters and the martyrs of Pulwama. The relatives of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Vir Abdul Hamid, and the families of CRPF personnel who died in the Pulwama Terror attack attended the event, among others. [6] [7]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Shaheed Smarak Patna</span>

The Martyrs' Memorial, also known as Shaheed Smarak, is a life-size statue of seven young men who died in the Quit India movement, to hoist the national flag on the (now) Secretariat building. The foundation stone of Martyr's Memorial was laid on 15 August 1947, by the governor of Bihar, Mr. Jairam Das Daulatram in presence of Premier of Bihar Shri Krishna Sinha and his deputy Anugrah Narayan Sinha. The sculptor Devi Prasad Roychoudhury built the bronze statue of the seven students with the national flag. These statues were cast in Italy and later placed here.

Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal is a non-governmental organisation based in Delhi, India. The organisation, named after Indian freedom fighter martyr Bhagat Singh works towards access and availability of emergency services. It is led by former MLA Jitender Singh Shunty. The organisation used to help with cremation of unclaimed bodies before COVID-19; however, after the start of the pandemic, it recorded a great increase in number of calls. The organisation started mobile fronts to keep bodies safe overnight by storing them in refrigerators in ambulances so that the bodies could be cremated next day.

Raja Devi Bakhsh Singh was a British-era King from Gonda, Uttar Pradesh. He was born in 19th century AD. He became popular because of 1857 revolt. He is represented as symbol of communal harmony, his name and the works done by him is still highly respected in neighbouring districts. Today there are few people who know his name but at that the time of 1857 revolt, he displayed valour and bravery and even encouraged harmony between Hindu & Muslim.

Nawab Majju Khan or Nawab Majiduddin Khan was the Ruler of Moradabad and Indian freedom fighter. He was shot and martyred by the British forces in 1858.
