Shamli is a district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. This district was carved out from Muzaffarnagar District on 28 September 2011 as Prabudh Nagar and renamed Shamli in July 2012. Shamli is the headquarters of the district. Shamli is located along the Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Expressway, Ambala-Shamli Expressway, Gorakhpur-Shamli Expressway, DelhiSaharanpur (National Highway-709B), Meerut-Karnal (National Highway-709A) and Panipat-Khatima (National Highway-709AD) Highways.

Formation

The district was carved out of Muzaffarnagar district in September 2011 and named Prabudh Nagar. Shamli and Kairana tehsils of Muzaffarnagar formed the new district. It was renamed Shamli in July 2012 by the Uttar Pradesh government. [2]

Geography

Shamli City lies at the intersection of NH 709A, NH 709B and NH 709AD and is within the National Capital Region.

Location

Shamli is 100 kilometres (62 mi) from Delhi, 65 kilometres (40 mi) from Meerut and Saharanpur, 60 km (37 mi) from Baghpat, and 40 kilometres (25 mi) from Muzaffarnagar, Karnal, Panipat, and Baraut.

Economy

Shamli city has an agriculture and industry based economy where sugarcane is the main crop. There are three major sugar mills located at Shamli, Un and Thanabhawan. Shamli is known worldwide for its Rim-Axle industry which also got selected under Uttar Pradesh Governments One District One Product Scheme.

It is served by Shamli railway station.

2013 Riots

As in many other districts of western Uttar Pradesh, Shamli also suffered rioting during the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots. [3] [4] A May 2015 report in India Today said that Shamli and Muzaffarnagar districts were "considered sensitive" ever since the violent riots of August and September 2013. [5]

Demographics

At the time of the 2011 census, Shamli district had a population of 1,273,578. Shamli has a sex ratio of 880 females per 1000 males. 386,102 (30.32%) lived in urban areas. Scheduled Castes made up 141,263 (11.09%) of the population. [6]

At the time of the 2011 Census of India, 88.44% of the population in the district spoke Khadiboli, 11.32% Hindi and 7.65% Urdu as their first language. [8]

There are three Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha constituencies in Shamli district: Shamli, kairana, and Thanabhawan. All of these are part of Kairana Lok Sabha constituency. The current MLA for Shamli is Prasan Chaudhary, the Lok Sabha MP is Iqra Choudhary.

National Highway 709AD, commonly called Panipat-Khatima Highway is a national highway in India. It is a spur road of National Highway 9. NH-709AD traverses the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana passes through various Cities and Town in Haryana and Western Uttar Pradesh like Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor in India before its terminal at Nagina in Bijnor. Shamli acts as one of the major junction as two other major highways of the area (709A) and (709B) intersects with (709AD) at Shamli. The other major junction is Muzaffarnagar where this highway intersects with (334) Delhi-Rishikesh National Highway and UP State Highway 59

The Delhi–Saharanpur–Dehradun Expressway, also known as National Highway 709B (NH 709B), is an under-construction, 210 kilometres (130 mi) long, 12/6 lane access-controlled expressway, which will connect Delhi, the national capital of India, with Dehradun, the capital of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It will pass through the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and will pass through the cities of Baghpat, Baraut, Shamli and Saharanpur. The National Highway 307 (NH-307) is also apart of Delhi Dehradun Expressway.

Kaniyan is a village consisting of a gram panchayat, Block Kandhla, Tehsil Shamli, District Shamli in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh situated in the Doab region of River Ganga and Yamuna.
