Sarhad, also known as Sarhad-e Broghil or Sarhad-e Wakhan, is a river valley in the Wakhan District of Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan. [1]

Sarhad lies at an altitude of 3,292 m (10,801 ft) [2] on the Wakhan River, at a point where the river broadens into a wide plain. It is inhabited by the native Pamiris, Wakhis and Kyrgyz people of Afghanistan. [3] The valley lies at the end of an unpaved road from Khandud in the west, [4] and just to the north of the Broghil Pass. Construction of the road to Bazai Gonbad and then to the Wakhjir Pass (Afghanistan–China border) in the northeast has started after the end of winter in 2024. [5] [6] As of December 2025, about 70% of the project has been completed. [7]
The population of the valley was reported in 2003 at around 548 people. [3] [8] The Sarhad Valley is part of the Wakhan National Park and protected by the Afghan Armed Forces. [9]
