The president of Sri Lanka is the head of state and head of government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The president is the chief executive of the union government and the commander-in-chief of the Sri Lanka Armed Forces. The powers,functions and duties of prior presidential offices,in addition to their relation with the Prime minister and Government of Sri Lanka,have over time differed with the various constitutional documents since the creation of the office. The president appoints the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka who can command the confidence of the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna is a leftist political party in Sri Lanka. The party was formerly a revolutionary movement and was involved in two armed uprisings against the government of Sri Lanka:once in 1971 (SLFP),and another in 1987–1989 (UNP). The motive for both uprisings was to establish a socialist state. Since then the JVP has entered mainstream democratic politics and has updated its ideology,abandoning some of its original Marxist policies such as the abolition of private property,and moderating its rhetoric. The JVP has been led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake since 2014.
Dinesh Chandra Rupasinghe Gunawardena is a Sri Lankan politician who served as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka from 2022 to 2024. He also held the positions of Minister of Public Administration,Home Affairs,Provincial Councils and Local Government. Gunawardena has been leader of the left-wing Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) party since 1983,was briefly the de facto leader of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna from 2022 to 2023,and has taken cabinet positions under several previous governments,including Leader of the House from 2020 until 2022.
Felix R. Dias Bandaranaike was a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician,who served as Cabinet Minister of Finance,Parliamentary Secretary for the Prime Minister and Defence and External Affairs (1960–1965) and Cabinet Minister of Justice (1970–77) in the cabinet of Prime Minister Sirima Bandaranaike. He was a very popular person about the anti-corruption campaign and also known as the "virtual leader of the state" during the SLFP governments after the death of Prime minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike. He was very active in defeating two major coups against the government,one is 1962 attempted military coup and JVP's 1971 JVP Insurrection.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake,commonly referred to by his initials AKD,is a Sri Lankan politician who has been the tenth and current president of Sri Lanka since 2024. Dissanayake is the first Sri Lankan president to be elected in a second round of vote counting,and the first elected president not from Sri Lanka's traditional political parties.

A member of the National People's Power and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna,he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Matara Electoral District in 2024 Sri Lankan parliamentary election.He formerly contested 2010 parliamentary elections under the Democratic National Alliance (DNA),which is led by former army chief Sarath Fonseka and was re-elected to Parliament from Colombo District.

The district is conterminous with the administrative district of Colombo in the Western province.
