Bimal Rathnayake is a Sri Lankan Marxist politician. A longstanding member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP),Rathnayake is member of the JVP Politburo,a national executive member of National People's Power (NPP) and a former member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka. [1] [2]
His wife,Samanmalee Gunasinghe,is a Central Committee member of the JVP and was elected in the 2024 Sri Lankan parliamentary election from Colombo from the NPP,while Rathnayake was elected as the first NPP national list candidate. He was first elected to parliament from Kurunagala in 2001 and was appointed to parliament in 2005 from the JVP national list.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna is a leftist political party in Sri Lanka. The party was formerly a revolutionary movement and was involved in two armed uprisings against the government of Sri Lanka:once in 1971 (SLFP),and another in 1987–1989 (UNP). The motive for both uprisings was to establish a socialist state. Since then the JVP has entered mainstream democratic politics and has updated its ideology,abandoning some of its original Marxist policies such as the abolition of private property. The JVP has been led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake since 2014.
