This is a timeline of the War in Donbass for October 2017. The timeline follows an ongoing conflict between Ukraine and anti-government pro-Russian separatists supported by Russian troops [1] in the Donbass region in eastern Ukraine.

1 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 20 occasions on Ukrainian positions on the last day of September (including on 10 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 9 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 1 occasion in Luhansk region); [2] [3] the fire was returned on 12 occasions. [4] [5] [6] [7] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO, polkovnyk Oleksandr Motuzyanyk, reported at noon that three Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 30 September. [2] [3] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 36 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 17 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers,  armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery. [8] In the outskirts of Donetsk city, Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian positions supported by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. The Ukrainian military also employed small arms, rocket launchers and armoured fighting vehicles. The main incidents took place at Kruta Balka, Spartak, Yasynuvata, Mineralne, Vasiliivka, Zhabicheve, Dokuchaievsk, Yasne and Petrovsky district. In the region of Mariupol, Sakhanka and Leninske came under 82 mm mortar fire, while separatist forces at Pikuzy, Zayichenko and Verhnioshyrokivske received fire from small arms, grenade launchers and armoured fighting vehicles. In the area of Horlivka, small arms fire and antitank rockets hit Zaitseve and Mayorsk checkpoint ( 48°23′48″N37°58′32″E / 48.39667°N 37.97556°E / 48.39667; 37.97556 [9] ). One soldier and one civilian resident were wounded. [10] According to local sources, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire five times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers and 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles to attack pro-Russian positions at Pervomaisk, Mykolayivka, Sentianivka, Slovianoserbsk and Knyaz Igor memorial. The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 3 occasions, no casualties were reported. Most incidents occurred in the region of Mariupol. In that area, 82 mm mortars landed in Pavlopil, while antitank rockets hit Vodiane. Ukrainian troops at Novotroitske were harassed with small arms fire. Later in the evening, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian redoubts at Novotroitske and Hnutove. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, rebel forces fired small arms and rocket launchers at Avdiivka and Zaitseve. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, small arms fire and antitank rockets struck the village of Krymske. 2 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 14 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 6 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 7 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 1 occasion in Luhansk region [15] [18] [19] ); the fire was returned on 12 occasions. [16] [17] [12] [20] [21] [22] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were killed and three were wounded and injured in the Donbass region on the first day of October. [15] [18] [19] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 35 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 17 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. [23] Pro-Russian positions at nine different areas around Donetsk city came under fire from 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and tanks. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian forces fired 82 mm and 120 mm mortars, while in the outskirts of Horlivka small arms fire and antitank rockets hit Zaitseve and Shyroka Balka. [24] In the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic, local officials reported eleven Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire. The Ukrainian military used small arms, heavy machine guns, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to engage pro-Russian positions at Sentianivka, Lozove, Zholobok, Kalynivka, Zhovte, Mykolayivka, Krasny Yar and Sokolniki. According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 9 occasions, the fire was returned on 7 occasions. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian entrenchments around Zaitseve. Heavy machine gun fire and antitank rockets hit Marinka, while small arms and heavy machine guns were used against Ukrainian troops at Pisky, Mayorsk and Nevelske. in the region of Mariupol, small arms and rocket launchers were fired at Shyrokyne, Vodiane and Pavlopil. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Krymske. Donetz railway station was hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets. [26] [27]

3 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 17 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 2 October (including on 10 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 4 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 3 occasions in Luhansk region [28] ); the fire was returned on 12 occasions. [29] [27] [30] [31] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 2 October 2017. [28] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 31 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 13 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. [32] Around Donetsk city, Ukrainian forces attacked Kruta Balka, Yasinuvata, Vasiliievka, Zhabicheve, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Yasne, Petrovsky district and Donetsk airport using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. In the region of Mariupol, armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian positions at Verhnioshyrokivske, Sakhanka and Leninske supported by small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars. The outskirts of Horlivka were struck by small arms fire and antitank rockets. [33] According to local sources, Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on three occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, rocket launchers, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless guns, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to pound pro-Russian redoubts at Dovhe, Krasny Yar, Sokolniki, Zhovte, Kalynove, Zholobok and Lozove. The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 4 occasions. There were three incidents involving "Grad" artillery rockets in the region of Mariupol. BM-21 multiple rocket launchers targeted Hnutove and Talakivka, while "Grad-P" single-tube launched rockets landed in Shyrokyne. The rebels fired at least 43 rockets at Ukrainian positions. A crop field was set ablaze. Vodiane was meanwhile shelled by 82 mm mortars. Hnutove was also the target of automatic grenade launchers. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, the separatists fired small arms and rocket launchers at Ukrainian redoubts in Avdiivka, Nevelske, Butivka mining complex and Mayorsk. In the northern front small arms fire and antitank rockets struck Trokhizbenka. Two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded at Hnutove at around 1:00 am. [35] [36] [37] [38] Another Ukrainian soldier was wounded at Trokhizbenka at around 6:00 pm. [39] Contact with two Ukrainian border guards was lost at Sumy. Russian media claimed that they were captured by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) after inadvertently crossing the border. [40]

4 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 22 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 9 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 8 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 5 occasions in Luhansk region [37] ); the fire was returned on 17 occasions. [39] [38] [41] [42] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 3 October. [37] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city recorded 48 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 17 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and heavy artillery. In the area of Donetsk city, the Ukrainian military employed small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Yasinuvata, Kruta Balka, Vasiliivka, Mineralne, Yakovliivka, Spartak, Dokuchaievsk, Kirov district and Petrovsky district. In the region of Mariupol, Leninske, Pikuzy, Sakhanka, Verhnioshyrokivske, Sosnovske and Kulykove were attacked with small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and 122 mm self-propelled guns. [43] [44] Sources from the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire nine times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian army employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Smile, Horoshche, Lohvynove, Kalynove, Krasny Liman, Slavyanoserbsk and Kalyinivka. According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 4 occasions, Ukrainian troops returned fire. In the surroundings of Donetsk city and Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Zaitseve, supported by heavy machine guns. Automatic grenade launchers opened fire on nearby Opytne. Small arms fire and antitank rockets hit Ukrainian army positions at Krasnohorivka. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Hnutove. [46] One Ukrainian soldier was wounded at Novoselivka Druha at around 8:00 pm, another serviceman was wounded in a skirmish between the warring parties that took place near Krasnohorivka. [47]

5 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 19 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 4 October (including on 10 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 5 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 4 occasions in Luhansk region [48] ); the fire was returned on 12 occasions. [47] [49] [50] [51] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded in the Donbass region on 4 October. [49] [48] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 40 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 16 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. Around Donetsk city, pro-Russian redoubts at 11 different locations were engaged by small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. Armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Leninske, Sakhanka and Sosnovske, in the region of Mariupol, supported by small arms and rocket launchers. In the area of Horlivka, Panteleymonivka and Zaitseve were struck by small arms fire, antitank rockets and 82 mm mortar rounds. [52] [53] According to local sources, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire five times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, heavy machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless guns, 82 mm and 120 mm mortars to engage pro-Russian positions at Krasny Yar, Sentianivka, Smile, Kalynivka and Kalynove. In the outskirts of Donetsk and Horlivka, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles opened fire on Ukrainian defenses at Pisky, while small arms fire and antitank rockets struck Zaitseve. Mayorsk railway station came under heavy machine gun fire. In the region of Mariupol, the rebels fired small arms, heavy machine guns and grenade launchers at Ukrainian positions near Berezove. [55]

6 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 24 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 12 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 7 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 5 occasions in Luhansk region [56] ); the fire was returned on 17 occasions. [57] [58] [59] [60] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 5 October. [56] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 48 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 18 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery. Ukrainian tanks engaged pro-Russian positions around Donetsk city supported by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and 122 mm self-propelled guns, while in the region of Mariupol armoured fighting vehicles and 82 mm mortars shelled Novolaspa, Leninske, Pikuzy and Sakhanka. In the area of Horlivka, pro-Russian redoubts were hit by small arms fire, antitank rockets and 82 mm mortar rounds. One pro-Russian soldier was killed in action. [61] [62] According to the same sources, there were 278 Ukrainian violations of the truce over the last week, with 980 rounds fired from banned heavy weapons such as mortars, tanks and heavy artillery. [62] Local sources reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on nine occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian army employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, 82 mm mortars and BMP-1 armoured vehicles to attack pro-Russian positions at Slavyanoserbsk, Krasny Lyman, Kalynove, Zhovte, Veselehorivka, Kruta Hora, Kalynivka and Sentianivka. According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 5 occasions. In the outskirts of Donetsk city and Horlivka, small arms and heavy machine gun fire was reported at Butivka mining complex, while Ukrainian redoubts at Verkhnyotoretske were struck by small arms fire and antitank rockets. In the region of Mariupol, 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Shyrokyne, and rocket propelled grenades hit Vodiane. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, rebel forces fired small arms near Krymske. One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded at Verkhnyotoretske at around 1:00 pm. [64]

[66] [67] [68] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian soldier was wounded in the Donbass region on 6 October. [65] Pro-Russian authorities at Donetsk city reported 45 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 19 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and heavy artillery. Pro-Russian forces in 14 areas around Donetsk city became the target of small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles, tanks and 122 mm self-propelled artillery. In the region of Mariupol, armoured fighting vehicles engaged pro-Russian positions at Leninske, Dzerzhinsky and Pikuzy supported by small arms and grenade launchers. In the outskirts of Horlivka, separatist positions were hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets. [69] [70] Officials from the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic said that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire 12 times within the republic boundaries. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, machine guns, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles and 82 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Lohvynove, Kalynove, Sentianivka, Zholobok, Pakhaliivka and Sokolniki. The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 3 occasions, the fire was returned on 1 occasion, near Vodiane. [72] Around Donetsk city and Horliivka, Avdiivka, Pisky, Mayorsk and Zaitseve became the target of heavy machine guns and rocket launchers. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian troops at Vodiane were attacked with small arms and automatic grenade launchers. Later in the evening, Hnutove and Starohnativka were hit by small arms fire and antitank rockets, while 82 mm mortar rounds landed in Shyrokyne. At night, rocket propelled grenades and 82 mm mortar rounds struck Ukrainian positions near Stanytsia Luhanska. Rocket launchers were also fired at Krymske. One Ukrainian soldier was wounded at Pisky at around 7:00 pm. [73] [74]

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 19 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 7 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 6 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 6 occasions in Luhansk region [75] ); the fire was returned on 11 occasions. [73] [74] [76] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that one Ukrainian serviceman was wounded in the Donbass region on 7 October. [75] [77] Pro-Russian officials at Donetsk city reported 31 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 15 different locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. Pro-Russian positions in 11 areas around Donetsk city were shelled by 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured fighting vehicles and tanks. In the region of Mariupol, Pikuzy and Leninske became the target of small arms, grenade launchers and 82 mm mortars. In the outskirts of Horlivka, Zaitseve and Isotove became the target of small arms and grenade launchers. [78] [79] According to local sources, the Ukrainian military broke the ceasefire 14 times within the borders of the self-styled Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian military employed small arms, automatic grenade launchers, 73 mm antitank recoilless rifles, Zu-23-2 antiaircraft guns, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles to pound pro-Russian positions at Slavyanoserbsk, Lohvynove, Kalynove, Sentianivka, Kalynivka, Zhovte, Krasny Liman and a checkpoint near Stanytsia Luhanska. According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on 4 occasions, no casualties were reported. In the area of Donetsk city, heavy machine gun fire was recorded at Avdiivka. Ukrainian redoubts at Krasnohorivka, meanwhile, were struck by small arms fire and antitank rockets. In the region of Mariupol, 120 mm mortar rounds landed in Shyrokyne. In the northern section of the demarcation line, Ukrainian troops at Valuiske were harassed with small arms and heavy machine gun fire. [81] Later in the night, nearby Krymske came under 82 mm and 120 mm mortar. [82]

A 47-year-old civilian, father of three, died on 8 October, being the 71st civilian fatality since the beginning of the year. [83]

9 October

According to the information provided by the spokesman of the Ukrainian operational headquarters in the morning, pro-Russian troops had opened fire on 26 occasions on Ukrainian positions on 8 October (including on 11 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 5 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 10 occasions in Luhansk region [84] [85] ); the fire was returned on 19 occasions. [86] [87] [88] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon no casualties in the Donbass region on 8 October. [84] [85] [89] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 24 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 13 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. [90] The outskirts of Donetsk city were shelled with 82 mm mortar, while 82 mm and 120 mm mortar volleys landed in different areas of the Mariuol region. In the surroundings of Horlivka, Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles, supported by small arms and rocket launchers, opened fire on Zaitseve, where a civilian resident was killed. [91] Local officials reported that Ukrainian forces broke the ceasefire on nine occasions within the boundaries of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People's Republic. The Ukrainian army employed small arms, machine guns, rocket launchers and 82 mm mortars to attack pro-Russian positions at Slavyanoserbsk, Krasny Lyman, Lohvynove, Kalynove, Sentianivka and Pakhaliivka. Around Donetsk city, automatic grenade launchers were fired at Krasnohorivka. Ukrainian forces fired back with heavy machine guns. Small arms fire was reported at Avdiivka and Nevelske. In the region of Mariupol, Shyrokyne was hit by 82 mm mortars and Talakivka by antitank rockets. [93] Later in the evening, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian positions at Hnutove, supported by infantry weapons. [94] In the northern sector of the demarcation line, the rebels fired rocket launchers at Ukrainian positions near Novooleksandrivka. One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded near Krasnohorivka during the night, another soldier was injured at Talakivka early in the morning. [93] One Ukrainian serviceman was wounded and another injured at Hnutove at around 6:00 pm. [94]

10 October

The ATO HQ reported in the morning that pro-Russian forces had opened fire on 12 occasions on Ukrainian positions the previous day (including on 3 occasions in the outskirts of Donetsk city, on 4 occasions in the region of Mariupol, and on 5 occasions in Luhansk region [95] ); the fire was returned on 8 occasions. [96] [97] [94] The spokesman of the Ministry of Defence on issues related to ATO reported at noon that two Ukrainian servicemen were wounded and two others were injured in the Donbass region on 9 October. [95] Pro-Russian sources at Donetsk city reported 31 Ukrainian violations of the ceasefire in 15 locations using small arms, grenade launchers, 82 mm mortars, 120 mm mortars, armoured personnel carriers and armoured fighting vehicles. [98] In the surroundings of Donetsk city, pro-Russian forces in 11 areas came under attack by small arms, rocket launchers, 82 mm mortars and armoured fighting vehicles. In the region of Mariupol, Leninske, Sosnovske, Dzerzhinsky and Pikuzy were hit by small arms fire, antitank rockets, 82 mm and 120 mm mortar rounds. According to the information provided by the ATO press-centre in the evening, as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian forces had opened fire on positions of Ukrainian troops on several occasions. Around Donetsk city, pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles engaged Ukrainian redoubts at Pisky, while small arms, heavy machine guns and rocket launchers were fired at the Ukrainian stronghold of Avdiivka; the Ukrainian defenders returned fire. Pro-Russian armoured fighting vehicles were met by Ukrainian armoured fighting vehicles, heavy machine gun fire and antitank rockets while attacking Ukrainian positions at Novotroitske, in the region of Mariupol. The press-centre of the ATO HQ reported in the evening that as of 6:00 pm pro-Russian troops had opened fire on Ukrainian troops on 10 occasions. Around Donetsk city, small arms and heavy machine gun fire was reported at Opytne, while antitank rockets hit Avdiivka, Pisky and Kamianka. In the region of Mariupol, Ukrainian troops at Starohnativka and Vodiane were harassed with small arms fire. Antitank rockets struck Ukrainian positions at Shyrokyne. In the northern sector of the demarcation line, 120 mm mortar rounds landed in Kryakivka. Krymske became the target of rocket launchers. One Ukrainian soldier was killed and another wounded near Opytne in the morning, one serviceman was wounded near Kamianka. [283] Three Ukrainian soldiers were wounded at Shyrokyne in the evening.
