Trogontherium is an extinct genus of Eurasian giant beavers that lived from the Late Pliocene to the Late Pleistocene. Fossils of Trogontherium have been found across northern Eurasia, from Western Europe to China and Siberia.
Trogontherium was originally described in 1809 from a skull given to Gotthelf Fischer von Waldheim from the collection of Russian aristocrat Alexander Sergeyevich Stroganov found near Taganrog on the coast of the Sea of Azov in southern Russia, suggested to be Early Pleistocene in age. Originally, no species name was given. In 1824, Georges Cuvier cited the type species name as being T. cuvieri, attributing the species name to Waldheim, which has been followed by later authors. T. cuvieri is known from the Late Pliocene to Pleistocene of Eurasia. [1] A distinctly smaller species, T. minus, named by Edwin Tulley Newton in 1890, is known from the Late Pliocene-earliest Pleistocene of Europe, where it co-existed with T. cuvieri.T. boisvilletti is generally considered a synonym of T. cuiveri. [1] Some authors also include the species T. minutus from the Late Miocene of Europe, though this species has also been included in the genera Steneofiber or Euroxenomys, although it is clearly closely related to Trogontherium. [2] Trogontherium has been placed as part of the subfamily Castoroidinae, which notably also includes North American giant beavers ( Castoroides ), [2] though the large body size seems to have developed independently in both lineages. [3]
Trogontherium cuvieri grew larger than living beavers ( Castor ), with a skull up to 21 centimetres (8.3 in) in length, but was smaller than Castoroides. The incisors are covered in fine longitudinal grooves, and have a convex enamel face. The cheek teeth are high crowned. The sagittal suture of the skull is flanked by two deep depressions. The skull roof is largely flat, and the skull is overall much more robust and massive than that of modern beavers. Compared to Castor, the humerus and femur of T. cuiveri are proportionally shorter, but the radius, ulna, tibia and fibula bones are proportionally longer. The metatarsal bones and phalanges of the hindlimb were longer, more slender and narrower than in Castor, suggesting that the feet did not have well-developed webbing. The ankle joint had a limited calcaneo-fibular connection, unknown in any other rodent, but comparable to those in lagomorphs and ungulates, which served to stabilise the ankle joint. [1]
Trogontherium is thought to have engaged in gnawing like modern beavers, though its convex incisors would have made it less effective at gnawing through hard vegetation than the flattened incisors of living Castor, and would have functioned more like a gouge than a chisel. It may have fed by gnawing on bark and lignified roots. [1] Dental microwear analysis of teeth of T. cuvieri from China, spanning the Pleistocene, suggest that it was ecologically plastic, and able to adapt its diet to local conditions. [4] T. cuvieri is suggested to have occupied a different, more terrestrial niche than living Castor, as suggested by its more cursorially (running) adapted limbs, though it appears to have been closely associated with aquatic environments. [1] At the Bilzingsleben site in Germany, dating to around 400–300,000 years ago, T. cuvieri is suggested to have been hunted by archaic humans, though it is much rarer at the site than remains of Castor. [5]
Trogontherium first appeared in Europe during the Pliocene, with the species T. cuvieri dispersing over to East Asia and Siberia at the Pliocene-Pleistocene boundary, around 2.6 million years ago. [4] T. cuvieri became extinct in Europe in the late Middle Pleistocene, during the Saalian glaciation (~300-125,000 years ago). [1] The last record of the species is from the Late Pleistocene of Manchuria near Harbin in Northeast China, around 40,000 years old. Its disappearance might be related to the arrival of hunter gatherers into the region. [3]
Beavers are large, semiaquatic rodents of the Northern Hemisphere. There are two existing species: the North American beaver and the Eurasian beaver. Beavers are the second-largest living rodents, after capybaras, weighing up to 50 kg (110 lb). They have stout bodies with large heads, long chisel-like incisors, brown or gray fur, hand-like front feet, webbed back feet, and tails that are flat and scaly. The two species differ in skull and tail shape and fur color. Beavers can be found in a number of freshwater habitats, such as rivers, streams, lakes and ponds. They are herbivorous, consuming tree bark, aquatic plants, grasses and sedges.
A pika is a small, mountain-dwelling mammal native to Asia and North America. With short limbs, a very round body, an even coat of fur, and no external tail, they resemble their close relative, the rabbit, but with short, rounded ears. The large-eared pika of the Himalayas and nearby mountains lives at elevations of more than 6,000 m (20,000 ft).
Homotherium is an extinct genus of scimitar-toothed cat belonging to the extinct subfamily Machairodontinae that inhabited North America, South America, Eurasia, and Africa during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs from around 4 million to 12,000 years ago. It was one of the last surviving members of the subfamily alongside the more famous sabertooth Smilodon, to which it was distantly related. It was a large cat, comparable in size to a lion. In comparison to Smilodon, the canines of Homotherium were shorter, and it was probably adapted to running down rather than ambushing prey, and is suggested to have engaged in cooperative hunting.
Castoridae is a family of rodents that contains the two living species of beavers and their fossil relatives. A formerly diverse group, only a single genus is extant today, Castor. Two other genera of "giant beavers", Castoroides and Trogontherium, became extinct in the Late Pleistocene.
Mammutidae is an extinct family of proboscideans belonging to Elephantimorpha. It is best known for the mastodons, which inhabited North America from the Late Miocene until their extinction at beginning of the Holocene, around 11,000 years ago. The earliest fossils of the group are known from the Late Oligocene of Africa, around 24 million years ago, and fossils of the group have also been found across Eurasia. The name "mastodon" derives from Greek, μαστός "nipple" and ὀδούς "tooth", referring to their characteristic teeth.

Elasmotherium is an extinct genus of large rhinoceros endemic to Eastern Europe and Central Asia with isolated finds from East Asia during Late Miocene through to the Late Pleistocene, with the youngest reliable dates around 39,000 years ago. It was the last surviving member of Elasmotheriinae, a distinctive group of rhinoceroses separate from the group that contains living rhinoceros (Rhinocerotinae).
Castoroides, or the giant beaver, is an extinct genus of enormous, bear-sized beavers that lived in North America during the Pleistocene. Two species are currently recognized, C. dilophidus in the Southeastern United States and C. ohioensis in most of North America. C. leiseyorum was previously described from the Irvingtonian age but is now regarded as an invalid name. All specimens previously described as C. leiseyorum are considered to belong to C. dilophidus.
Anancus is an extinct genus of "tetralophodont gomphothere" native to Afro-Eurasia, that lived from the Tortonian stage of the late Miocene until its extinction during the Early Pleistocene, roughly from 8.5–2 million years ago.
Castor californicus is an extinct species of beaver that lived in western North America from the end of the Miocene to the early Pleistocene. Castor californicus was first discovered in Kettleman Hills in California, United States. The species was similar to but larger than the extant North American beaver, C. canadensis.
Prolagus is an extinct genus of lagomorph. Over 20 species have been named, and the genus was abundant and widespread in Europe during the Neogene. However, by the end of the Middle Pleistocene, it was confined to a single species, the Sardinian pika, on the Corsica, Sardinia, and surrounding islands, where it survived into historical times. In North Africa and Western Asia, the genus is known from the Miocene and Pliocene. The scientific name may mean "before hares" or "primitive hares". Its taxonomy is disputed, with it either being considered a member of the family Ochotonidae, which includes living pikas, or the only member of the family Prolagidae.
Josephoartigasia is an extinct genus of enormous dinomyid rodent from the Early Pliocene to Early Pleistocene of Uruguay. The only living member of Dinomyidae is the pacarana. Josephoartigasia is named after Uruguayan national hero José Artigas. It contains two species: J. magna, described in 1966 based on a left mandible, and J. monesi, described in 2008 based on a practically complete skull. Both are reported from the San José Member of the Raigón Formation by the Barrancas de San Gregorio along the shores of Kiyú beach.
Propalaeocastor is a poorly known extinct genus of beavers from the early Oligocene of Europe and Asia. Recently described material of a new species of Propalaeocastor, P. irtyshensis, indicates the genus is probably the earliest known member of the subfamily Castorinae, which includes all castorids more closely related to living beavers than to the extinct giant beaver. Previously, Propalaeocastor had been allied with more basal beavers such as Agnotocastor and Anchitheriomys. According to Wu and coauthors, Propalaeocastor, specifically P. butselensis, is the likely ancestor of the better-known Eurasian castorine Steneofiber.
Migmacastor is an extinct member of the beaver family, Castoridae, known from a single species, Migmacastor procumbodens. Only a single specimen has been reported, a skull from the late Oligocene or early Miocene of Nebraska. Features of the incisor teeth of Migmacastor indicate they were used to dig. Other extinct beavers, including the better-known Palaeocastor, were also fossorial (digging), but Migmacastor may have become a burrower independently.
Ramsayia is an extinct genus of giant wombat, weighing around 100 kg. Ramsayia is known from two species, Ramsayia lemleyi from the Pliocene of Queensland, and Ramsayia magna from the Pliocene to Late Pleistocene of Queensland and New South Wales. The skull superficially resembles that of the giant beavers Castoroides and Trogontherium. The large premaxillary spine suggests it possessed a large fleshy nose. The shape of the skull of R. magna suggests that it did not engage in burrowing. Cladistic analysis suggests that it is closely related to the other giant wombat genera Phascolonus and Sedophascolomys. Like other giant wombats, its size is thought to have been adaption to feeding on large amounts of low quality vegetation. The only certain date of Ramsayia magna dates to the early Late Pleistocene, around 80,000 years ago, making the timing of its extinction uncertain.

Stephanorhinus is an extinct genus of two-horned rhinoceros native to Eurasia and North Africa that lived during the Late Pliocene to Late Pleistocene. Species of Stephanorhinus were the predominant and often only species of rhinoceros in much of temperate Eurasia, especially Europe, for most of the Pleistocene. The last two species of Stephanorhinus – Merck's rhinoceros and the narrow-nosed rhinoceros – went extinct during the last glacial period.

Homo longi is an extinct species of archaic human identified from a nearly complete skull, nicknamed 'Dragon Man', from Harbin on the Northeast China Plain, dating to at minimum 146,000 years ago during the Middle Pleistocene. The skull was discovered in 1933 along the Songhua River while the Dongjiang Bridge was under construction for the Manchukuo National Railway. Due to a tumultuous wartime atmosphere, it was hidden and only brought to paleoanthropologists in 2018. H. longi has been hypothesized to be the same species as the Denisovans, but this cannot be confirmed without genetic testing.
Dihoplus is an extinct genus of rhinoceros that lived in Eurasia from the Late Miocene to Pliocene.
