"Vanish into You" is a 2025 song by Lady Gaga. It was the fifth track on the standard edition of her studio album Mayhem (2025) and was the first song she wrote for the album.[5]Andrew Watt, Henry Walter, and Michael Polansky are co-writers. The song blends glam rock, David Bowie-inspired choruses, and lyrics about surrender.[2]
The song received positive reviews from critics, who praised its vocal performance, production, and stylistic ambition, with several outlets naming it among the album's standout tracks. Commercially, it debuted at number 38 on the Billboard Global 200 and charted in countries such as Brazil, Canada, the United States, and France. Gaga first performed the song during the promotional concerts for Mayhem, including appearances at Coachella and Copacabana Beach, and later incorporated it into the setlist of the Mayhem Ball tour.
Background and release
In March 2024, Gaga said that she was "writing some of the best songs I can remember" and revealed that her upcoming album had begun to take shape in 2022, while she was on her Chromatica Ball tour.[6][7] In an interview prior to the album's release, she said she was excited for fans to hear one of the songs—later confirmed to be "Vanish into You"—and highlighted its "hard-hitting beats" along with a combination of "big, sweeping Queen vocals and some Bowie guitars".[8] The song was originally announced as the fifth track of the album on February 18, 2025.[9] In March 2025, during a fan conference organized by Spotify, Gaga revealed that it was the first song she wrote for the album and described it as an "apocalyptic love song".[10]
Composition
"Vanish into You" was written by Lady Gaga, Andrew Watt, Henry Walter, and Michael Polansky. Paper magazine has called the song "a discovery of love".[11]Riff magazine said the song sees Gaga "[channel] Blondie with a four-on-the-floor rhythm that's rooted in funk. The track explores merging identity with a partner's to insulate from emotions".[12]Variety called the track a "David Bowie-referencing"[13] song that "builds towards its chorus with the same tension" as "Bad Romance" (2009).[14]Pitchfork has said "Vanish into You" has "pining yelps".[15]Clash magazine said the song "drops the tempo a little" and has "disco-fringed synths recalling ABBA's imperial phase; there's a slight retro touch at times here, too".[16]Vulture called it "an ABBA song through and through" with "happy-sad Swedish chords and melodies".[17]AllMusic's Neil Z. Yeung felt the track "could have easily been on The Fame", Gaga's 2008 debut album.[18] Some fans pointed out parallels with Gaga's late collaborator Tony Bennett, based on lyrics that evoked some of his best-known songs, including "Blue Moon" (1958) and "For Once in My Life" (1967).[19]
Reception
Gaga performing "Vanish into You" at The Mayhem Ball tour in 2025
"Vanish Into You" received mostly positive reviews from music critics, who highlighted it as one of the standout tracks on the album. Billboard's Stephen Daw wrote, "Perhaps the most vocally impressive song on Mayhem is 'Vanish into You,' Gaga's glam-rock offering of adoration. Inspired by icons like David Bowie, 'Vanish' brings a glitzy finish to the frayed edges of Mayhem, complete with chunky guitars and four-on-the-floor rhythms that make you want to get up and dance. But its the harmonies Gaga creates with herself throughout the song's heart-puncturing chorus that stand out most, as she utilizes every inch of her vocal range to tell her lover just how in love she truly is."[2]Rolling Stone's Richard Burn said, "a career high can be found in the multi-facetted dance funk avant-garde drama" of the song.[20]Slant Magazine's Alex Camp characterized it as "one of the album's most daring songs."[21]
The A.V. Club's Drew Gillis highlighted "Vanish into You" as one of the album's strongest moments, describing it as a "soaring ballad" in which Gaga "makes a melodramatic meal out of the melody."[22] Chris Hedden of Screen Rant wrote, "The mood of the song is at once joyful but also has this wistful feeling that the uplift is slowly leaving, like acknowledging summer is going away and the transition to fall is on the way. Like having to keep on a smiling face while feeling that a pressure or growing worry is coming and that it's hard to keep that goodness going. But 'Vanish into You' is a good one indeed."[23] On NPR Music, Hazel Cills praised the song, stating that it reflects Gaga's confidence in her own artistic formula and her ability to "pull it off quite confidently."[24] Adam White of The Independent felt the track is "produced a little haphazardly – 'raw' doesn’t need to mean vaguely unpleasant."[25]
Paste ranked "Vanish into You" at number 39 on its list of the 100 best songs of 2025. The outlet's Matt Mitchell wrote, "it's a daring pop song because it doesn't flutter once, [...] potent with a high-pitch, glass-breaking chorus, and picture-perfect, sugary production. It's also the most joyous Gaga has sounded on a track in more than a decade..."[26] Reception of the song among general listeners was also largely positive; fans voted "Vanish into You" as their favorite song from Mayhem in a poll conducted by Billboard.[27]
Commercial performance
During the release week of Mayhem, "Vanish into You" entered the Billboard Global 200 at number 38. It was one of twelve tracks from the album to appear on the chart and the fourth highest-charting among them.[28] In the United States, the song debuted at number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number four on the Hot Dance/Pop Songs chart.[29][30] On the latter chart, Gaga simultaneously placed nine songs from the album, with "Vanish into You" ranking as the third highest-positioned track.[31] In Canada, it entered the Canadian Hot 100 at number 53,[32] while in Brazil it reached number 28 on the Brasil Hot 100.[33]
Gaga's first live performance of "Vanish into You" was during her 2025 promotional concerts for Mayhem, which included a headlining set at Coachella. She walked through her audience during the track, stopping to hold hands and singing into their faces.[42] On May 13, 2025, Gaga performed "Vanish into You" during a five-song set at the YouTube Brandcast event, held at the Geffen Hall in New York City.[43] Similar to the promotional concerts, the song featured in the setlist of her subsequent Mayhem Ball tour as the closer for the penultimate act.[44] On September 8, 2025, Gaga performed "Vanish into You" on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, delivering a stripped-down rendition accompanied by two guitarists that Billboard called "mesmerizing".[45] On October 3, Gaga performed it on the piano at Santa Monica, California's radio station KCRW.[46]
