Settlers were present as early as 1834 in what was the unincorporated village of Coburg. [6] A post office was established at Coburg in 1876, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. [7] The community was named after Cobourg, Ontario, the native home of an early settler. [8] [9] Coburg was a station and shipping point on the railroad. [10] Washington Township was organized in 1836. [11]
