Wikimedia in India refers to all the Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects which are of special interest to people in India or interested in topics relating to India.
Wikipedia has different versions for various languages in India. These language Wikipedia versions have their own culture and history of development.
Hindi and English language versions are the most popular in India. [1]
The Wikimedia chapter in India organized the Wikimedia community to establish Santhali language Wikipedia in August 2018. [2] This was part of an effort to feature a tribal language. [2]
Google advises Wikipedia and suggests topics on which Wikimedia community volunteers should write articles, based on the most frequent Google search terms. [3]
In September 2019 the Ministry of Science and Technology expressed an intent to promote the development of Hindi language Wikipedia articles on sciences. [4]
Health experts have collaborated with Wikipedia editors to share information about vaccines in local language. [5]
Readers of various languages have differing interests. For example, in 2019 "Shivaji" was the most popular article in Marathi Wikipedia, [6] "Guru Granth Sahib" was the most popular in Punjabi, [6] and "vagina" was the most popular in Bhojpuri. [7] Wikipedia articles are sometimes the targets of political debate. [8] Articles where there have been discussions and controversy include "2020 Delhi riots" and "Jai Shri Ram". [8]
WikiConference India is a Wikipedia conference first hosted in India in 2011. [9]
In 2004 Wikimedia editors in India began planning a regional organization, Wikimedia India. [10] Organizers drafted by-laws in 2007, and in 2008 convened meetings with the assistance of the Centre for Internet and Society. [10] The organization was founded in July 2009 as the 29th Wikimedia chapter. [10]
A magazine editor named Sangram Keshari Senapati was praised for his development of Odia Wikipedia. [11] [12]
The Wikipedia in Education Programme (WEP) started in 2013 at various colleges. [13] In 2011, students at colleges and universities in Pune were recognized for participating in a Wikipedia education project. [14] [15] In 2020, participants in the WEP were developing content in Tulu. [13]
In 2020, the volunteer Wikipedia community had been funding the majority of Wiki community activities in India. [13]
The Karavali Wikimedia community described that they edit among English, Kannada, the Tulu, and the Konkani Wikipedia language versions. [16] They edit on topics including health and women's interest. [16]
Google sponsored Project Tiger, which was a program to develop Wikipedia content in languages of India. [18] [3] Google provided Chromebooks, while the Wikimedia Foundation offers stipends for an internet connection. [3] Some volunteers balked at the list of subjects provided by Google – mostly topics trending on Google, which some volunteers found irrelevant. [3] Later, a local list was provided. [3]
The Wikimedia Foundation runs fundraising campaigns asking Indian people to donate. [19] One news source described that request for money as awkwardly emotional. [20]
In 2011 the Wikimedia Foundation opened a branch office in India. [21] One of the goals of establishing an office there was to increase regional fundraising. [22] [23]
In 2020, the government of India issued an order to Wikipedia to remove certain maps of India's borders, threatening to block the platform in the country. [24] [25]
The Indian government regulates websites including Wikipedia with the Information Technology Rules, 2021. [26] [27] As those rules were being drafted in 2020, some news sources speculated that Wikipedia was not in compliance with those rules. [26]
Author Tuhin Sinha sued the WMF regarding the deletion of the English Wikipedia article about him in 2022. He said the suit was "a fight against the Western deep state." [28] In 2022, India's Supreme Court dismissed defamation suits by the Ayurvedic Medicine Manufacturers Organisation of India against Wikipedia. [29]
In July 2024, Asian News International filed the lawsuit Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation in the Delhi High Court with an accusation of defamation. [30] Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation opened in Delhi High Court in August 2024 [31] [32] with WMF being cited for contempt of court in September and ordered back to court in October. [33] On 21 October, the Wikimedia Foundation suspended access to the article for Asian News International vs. Wikimedia Foundation due to an order from the court. [34]
In September 2024, the Supreme Court of India ordered Wikipedia to remove the name of the victim in the Wikipedia article about the 2024 Kolkata rape and murder incident. [35]
Indian hip hop is a genre of popular music developed in India. Desi hip hop is a term given by Bohemia for music and culture which combines the influences of hip hop and the Indian subcontinent; the term desi referring to the South Asian diaspora. The term has also come to be used as an alternative for rap music and even pop music which involves rappers of South Asian origins.
Udupi district is an administrative subdivision in the Karnataka state of India, with the district headquarters in the city of Udupi. It is situated in the Canara old north Malabar coastal region. There are seven taluks, 233 villages and 21 towns in Udupi district. The three northern tehsils of Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala, were partitioned from Dakshina Kannada district to form Udupi district on 25 August 1997. Moodabidri was officially declared as new tehsil (taluk) in 2018.
The constitutional power to create new states and union territories in India is solely reserved with the Parliament of India, which can do so by announcing new states/union territories, separating territory from an existing state or merging two or more states/union territories or parts of them. As of 2024, there are 28 states and eight union territories in India.

Internet censorship in India is done by both central and state governments. DNS filtering and educating service users in suggested usages is an active strategy and government policy to regulate and block access to Internet content on a large scale. Measures for removing content at the request of content creators through court orders have also become more common in recent years. Initiating a mass surveillance government project like Golden Shield Project is an alternative that has been discussed over the years by government bodies.
Arvind Kejriwal is an Indian politician, activist and former bureaucrat, who served as the 7th Chief Minister of Delhi. He was the chief minister from 2013 to 2014 and from 2015 to 2024. He is also the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) since 2012. He has represented the New Delhi constituency in the Delhi Legislative Assembly since 2015 and from 2013 to 2014.

Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu was an Indian violinist in the Carnatic classical tradition. Known for his refined bowing technique and expressive playing, Naidu was one of the most celebrated violinists of the 20th century in Carnatic music. He was the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1953 and the Padma Shri in 1957. Despite being partially blind, Naidu achieved international recognition and influenced many students and musicians during his career. Several members of his family are also notable Carnatic violinists.
Asian News International (ANI) is an Indian news agency that offers syndicated multimedia news feeds to news bureaus in India. The company was established by Prem Prakash in 1971 and, under the name TVNF, it soon became the first agency in India to syndicate video news. Drawing upon connections within the Indian government, ANI expanded greatly during the early 2000s. After a period of downturn, the company regained its monopolistic position; as of 2019, it is India's largest television news agency, and as of 2024, the largest newswire service.
Ganesan Mahadevan, known by his stage name Delhi Ganesh, was an Indian actor who mostly acted in supporting roles in Tamil cinema and serials. He was well known for the versatility of roles he played during his illustrious career. He acted in more than 400 films. He was given the stage name Delhi Ganesh by K. Balachander. He was introduced to Tamil film industry by K. Balachander through the film Pattina Pravesam (1976).
Rajat Sharma is an Indian journalist and businessperson acting as the chairman and Editor-in-chief of India TV, an Indian news channel. In 2015, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India's highest civilian awards. Sharma is notable for his close ties with influential political figures, including the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitley.

Tulu cinema, also known as Coastalwood, is a part of Indian cinema. The Tulu film industry produces five to seven films annually. The first Tulu film was Enna Thangadi released in 1971. Earlier, these films were released in theatres across the Tulu Nadu region. Tulu film industry has grown to such an extent that films are being released simultaneously in Mangalore, Udupi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Middle East. The critically acclaimed Tulu film Suddha won the award for the best Indian Film at the Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema held in New Delhi in 2006. In 2011, the Tulu film Industry got a second lease of life with the release of the film Oriyardori Asal. The film turned out to be the biggest hit in Tulu film history to date. Chaali Polilu is the longest running film in Tulu film industry. This movie is the highest-grossing film in the Tulu film industry. It has successfully completed 470 days at PVR Cinemas in Mangalore.
The Wikimedia Foundation has been involved in several lawsuits, generally regarding the content of Wikipedia. They have won some and lost others. In the United States, the Wikimedia Foundation typically wins defamation lawsuits brought against it due to protections that web platforms receive from laws like Section 230.
Atishi Marlena Singh, , is an Indian politician who is currently serving as the 8th Chief Minister of Delhi since 21 September 2024, after the resignation of Arvind Kejriwal. She belongs to the Aam Aadmi Party and is a member of its Political Affairs Committee, the governing body of the party. Prior to her appointment as the chief minister, she also served as the Minister of Education, P.W.D, Culture and Tourism in the Delhi Government. Previously, she served as advisor to the former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, primarily on education, from July 2015 to 17 April 2018. Atishi is one of only two women currently serving as a chief minister in India, along with Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal.
The Tulu Wikipedia is the Tulu language edition of Wikipedia, run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It currently has 2,623 articles and it is the 249th largest edition of Wikipedia by article count. It is the 23rd language of India to get a Wikipedia after eight years in incubation.
Umar Khalid is an Indian student activist, a former research scholar at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), former leader of Democratic Students' Union (DSU) in JNU. He was allegedly involved in the JNU sedition row. Considered a political prisoner, Khalid has been imprisoned in Tihar Jail for alleged involvement in the 2020 Delhi Riots since September 2020 and has consistently been denied bail, even though his court trial is yet to begin. Khalid is also associated with United Against Hate, a campaign founded along with Nadeem Khan in July 2017 in response to a series of lynchings.
Vinai Kumar Saxena is an Indian business executive who is currently serving as the 22nd Lieutenant Governor of Delhi since 2022. He previously served as chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission from 2015 to 2022.
