(23958) 1998 VD30, provisional designation:1998 VD30, is a Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 47 kilometers (29 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 10 November 1998, by astronomers with the LINEAR survey at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site near Socorro, New Mexico, in the United States. [1] The dark Jovian asteroid belongs to the 110 largest Jupiter trojans and shows an exceptionally slow rotation of 562 hours. [8] It has not been named since its numbering in April 2001. [9]
1998 VD30 is a dark Jupiter trojan in a 1:1 orbital resonance with Jupiter. It is located in the leading Greek camp at the Gas Giant's L4 Lagrangian point, 60° ahead of its orbit . It is also a non-family asteroid in the Jovian background population. [4] It orbits the Sun at a distance of 4.7–5.7 AU once every 12 years (4,370 days; semi-major axis of 5.23 AU). Its orbit has an eccentricity of 0.10 and an inclination of 25° with respect to the ecliptic. [2] The body's observation arc begins with its first observation as 1986 WG9 at the Kiso Observatory in November 1986, or 12 years prior to its official discovery observation at Socorro. [1]
This minor planet was numbered by the Minor Planet Center on 8 April 2001 ( M.P.C. 42554). [9] As of 2021 [update] , it has not been named. [1]
1998 VD30 is an assumed, carbonaceous C-type asteroid. [8] Most Jupiter trojans are D-types, with the reminder being mostly C and P-type asteroids. It has a typical V–I color index of 0.99 and a BR-color of 1.15. [8]
With a rotation period of 562 hours, this slow rotator belongs to the Top 100 slowest rotators known to exist. It is also the third-slowest rotator among the larger Jupiter trojans after 4902 Thessandrus (738 hours) and (7352) 1994 CO (648 hours).
In August 2015, a rotational lightcurve of 1998 VD30 was obtained from photometric observations by the Kepler space observatory during its K2 mission. Lightcurve analysis gave an exceptionally long period of 562±4 hours with a brightness amplitude of 0.45 magnitude, somewhat indicative of a non-spherical shape ( U=2 ). [7] A second, lower-rated lightcurve from Kepler gave an alternative, even longer period of 1143±155 hours ( U=2 ). [8] [10]
These results supersede a poor period determination made at the Sierra Nevada Observatory in 2007, which gave a period 12.080 hours ( U=1 ). [8] [11]
According to the survey carried out by the NEOWISE mission of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and the Japanese Akari satellite, 1998 VD30 measures 46.00 and 47.91 kilometers in diameter and its surface has an albedo between 0.076 and 0.084, respectively. [5] [6] The Collaborative Asteroid Lightcurve Link assumes a standard albedo for a carbonaceous asteroid of 0.057 and calculates a larger diameter of 50.77 kilometers based on an absolute magnitude of 10.2. [8]

1143 Odysseus, provisional designation 1930 BH, is a large Jupiter trojan located in the Greek camp of Jupiter's orbit. It was discovered on 28 January 1930, by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory in southwest Germany, and later named after Odysseus, the legendary hero from Greek mythology. The dark D-type asteroid has a rotation period of 10.1 hours. With a diameter of approximately 125 kilometers, it is among the 10 largest Jovian trojans.
3596 Meriones is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 80 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 14 November 1985, by Danish astronomers Poul Jensen and Karl Augustesen at the Brorfelde Observatory near Holbæk, Denmark. The assumed C-type asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 12.96 hours. It was named after the Cretan leader Meriones from Greek mythology.
2797 Teucer is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 110 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 4 June 1981, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station near Flagstaff, Arizona, in the United States. The dark D-type asteroid belongs to the 20 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 10.15 hours. It was named after the Greek hero and great archer, Teucer.
3540 Protesilaos is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 76 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 27 October 1973, by German astronomer Freimut Börngen at the Karl Schwarzschild Observatory in Tautenburg, Germany. The assumed C-type asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 8.9 hours. It was named after the Greek hero Protesilaus from Greek mythology, the first Greek to set foot on the shores of Troy.
3564 Talthybius is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 73 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 15 October 1985, by American astronomer Edward Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station near Flagstaff, Arizona, in the United States. The dark D-type asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a relatively long rotation period of 40.59 hours. It was named after the Greek hero Talthybius, who was a herald during the Trojan War.
5652 Amphimachus is a Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 53 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 24 April 1992, by American astronomer couple Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory in California. The dark Jovian asteroid belongs to the 80 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 8.4 hours. It was named from Greek mythology after Amphimachus, who was slain by Hector.
4060 Deipylos is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 84 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 17 December 1987, by astronomers Eric Elst and Guido Pizarro at ESO's La Silla Observatory in northern Chile. The transitional C-type asteroid belongs to the 40 largest Jupiter trojans and has rotation period of 9.3 hours. It was named after Deipylos from Greek mythology.
7119 Hiera is a large Jupiter trojan and potentially slow rotator from the Greek camp, approximately 70 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 11 January 1989, by American astronomer couple Carolyn and Eugene Shoemaker at Palomar Observatory in California. The dark Jovian asteroid belongs to the 60 largest Jupiter trojans and has an estimated rotation period of at least 400 hours. It was named for the Amazon Hiera, who fought against the Greeks in the Trojan War. As with 624 Hektor, the naming for this Jovian asteroid was placed into the wrong camp.
4138 Kalchas is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 53 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 19 September 1973, by Dutch astronomers Ingrid and Cornelis van Houten at Leiden, on photographic plates taken by Tom Gehrels at the Palomar Observatory in California. The assumed C-type asteroid is the principal body of the proposed Kalchas family and has a rotation period of 29.2 hours. It was named after the seer Calchas from Greek mythology.

It was discovered during the third Palomar–Leiden Trojan survey on 16 October 1977, by Ingrid and Cornelis van Houten at Leiden, and Tom Gehrels at the Palomar Observatory in California. It is likely spherical in shape and has a longer-than-average rotation period of 27.68 hours. The assumed C-type asteroid is one of the 80 largest Jupiter trojans. It was named after Panthous (Panthoos) from Greek mythology.
4543 Phoinix is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 63 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 2 February 1989, by American astronomer Carolyn Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory in California. The assumed C-type asteroid is possibly elongated and has a longer-than-average rotation period of 38.9 hours. It is one of the 60 largest Jupiter trojans and was named after Phoenix (Phoinix) from Greek mythology.
4086 Podalirius is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 86 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 9 November 1985, by Soviet astronomer Lyudmila Zhuravleva at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory in Nauchnij, on the Crimean peninsula. The assumed C-type asteroid belongs to the 40 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 10.43 hours. It was named after the legendary healer Podalirius from Greek mythology.
4902 Thessandrus is a Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 60 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 9 January 1989, by American astronomer Carolyn Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory in California, and later named after Thessander (Thessandrus) from Greek mythology. The dark D-type asteroid is an exceptionally slow rotator and tumbler. It belongs to the 70 largest Jupiter trojans.
1208 Troilus is a large and notably inclined Jupiter trojan from the Trojan camp, approximately 103 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 31 December 1931, by German astronomer Karl Reinmuth at the Heidelberg Observatory in southern Germany. The unusual F-type asteroid belongs to the largest Jupiter trojans and has a long rotation period of 56.2 hours. It was named after the Trojan prince Troilus, who was killed by Achilles.
7352 Hypsenor, provisional designation:1994 CO, is a larger Jupiter trojan from the Trojan camp, approximately 48 kilometers in diameter. The tumbling Jovian asteroid is a slow rotator with an exceptionally long rotation period of 648 hours. It was discovered on 4 February 1994 by Japanese astronomers Seiji Ueda and Hiroshi Kaneda at the Kushiro Observatory on Hokkaidō, Japan. It was numbered in December 1996, and named after the Trojan warrior Hypsenor from Greek mythology in November 2021.
9799 Thronium, provisional designation: 1996 RJ, is a large Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp and the parent body of a small, unnamed asteroid family (006), approximately 68 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered on 8 September 1996, by American astronomer Timothy Spahr at the Catalina Station of the Steward Observatory near Tucson, Arizona, in the United States. The assumed C-type asteroid belongs to the 50 largest Jupiter trojans and has a relatively long rotation period of 21.52 hours. It was named for the ancient Greek city of Thronium mentioned in the Iliad.
(21601) 1998 XO89, provisional designation:1998 XO89, is a Jupiter trojan from the Greek camp, approximately 55 kilometers (34 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 15 December 1998, by astronomers with the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research at the Lincoln Lab's ETS near Socorro, New Mexico. The dark Jovian asteroid has a rotation period of 12.7 hours and belongs to the 80 largest Jupiter trojans. It has not been named since its numbering in February 2001.

The dark Jovian asteroid has a rotation period of 15.1 hours and belongs to the 90 largest Jupiter trojans. It has not been named since its numbering in June 2000.
(32496) 2000 WX182, provisional designation:2000 WX182, is a Jupiter trojan from the Trojan camp, approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 18 November 2000, by astronomers with the LINEAR program at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site near Socorro, New Mexico, in the United States. The dark Jovian asteroid belongs the 100 largest Jupiter trojans and has a rotation period of 23.3 hours. It has not been named since its numbering in November 2001.
(15977) 1998 MA11, provisional designation:1998 MA11, is a Jupiter trojan from the Trojan camp, approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) in diameter. It was discovered on 19 June 1998, by astronomers with the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research at the Lincoln Lab's ETS near Socorro, New Mexico, in the United States. The suspected tumbler is also a slow rotator with a period of 250 hours. It has not been named since its numbering in July 2000.
