Adarsh Sein Anand (1 November 1936 –1 December 2017) was the 29th Chief Justice of India,serving from 10 October 1998 to 31 October 2001.
Anand completed his studies from GGM Science College Jammu (erstwhile Prince of Wales college),Lucknow University,and University College London, [2] and enrolled as an Advocate at the Bar Council on 9 November 1964. Having practised in Criminal Law,Constitutional Law,Election Law at the Punjab and Haryana High Court,he was appointed Additional Judge,Jammu and Kashmir High Court from 26 May 1975. He became the Chief Justice,Jammu and Kashmir High Court on 11 May 1985 and transferred to the Madras High Court on 1 November 1989. He was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of India,on 18 November 1991. [3]
On 17 February 2003,he took over as the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission and was succeeded by Justice Rajendra Babu on 2 April 2007.
In February 2010,he was appointed chairman of a five-member committee set up to examine the safety aspects of the Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala. The panel submitted the report on 25 April 2012. [4]
Anand was unanimously elected President of the International Institute of Human Rights Society in 1996. In 1997,he became the first Indian to be awarded the Fellowship of University College London,his alma mater. Anand was nominated as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (India),a statutory body,with effect from July 1997 in recognition of his contribution to legal aid for the poor. He was also unanimously elected Honorary Bencher of the Inner Temple this year. He is the author of the book,The Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir –Its Development and Comments. [3] On 26 January 2008,Anand was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan,the second highest civilian award in India.

At least three landmark judgments given by Anand as the Judge of the Supreme Court have revealed his commitment to human rights and justice.
Anand had a controversial tenure as Chief Justice of India. Activists have made four serious charges of corruption and abuse of office against Anand. [6] No probe,however,was conducted on any of the allegations.
Justice Vaidyanathapuram Rama Iyer Krishna Iyer was an Indian judge who became a pioneer of judicial activism. He pioneered the legal-aid movement in the country. Before that,he was a state minister and politician.
Muhammad Haleem,LL.D. (HC),HI was a Pakistani jurist who served as the 10th Chief Justice of Pakistan from 1981 to 1989,the longest serving Chief Justice in the history of the judicial branch in Pakistan. He was even endorsed by successive future regimes in Pakistan.
Aziz Mushabber Ahmadi was an Indian judge who was the 26th Chief Justice of India. After serving as a judge in the Gujarat High Court,Ahmadi was appointed judge to the Supreme Court in 1988. He was then elevated to the post of Chief Justice,and served from 1994 to 1997. He served as chancellor at the Aligarh Muslim University for two terms.

Hans Raj Khanna was an Indian judge,jurist and advocate who propounded the basic structure doctrine in 1973 and attempted to uphold civil liberties during the time of Emergency in India in a lone dissenting judgement in 1976. He entered the Indian judiciary in 1952 as an Additional District and Sessions Judge and subsequently was elevated as a judge to the Supreme Court of India in 1971 where he continued till his resignation in 1977.
Christopher Gregory Weeramantry,AM was a Sri Lankan lawyer who was a Judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) from 1991 to 2000,serving as its vice-president from 1997 to 2000. Weeramantry was a judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka from 1967 to 1972. He also served as an emeritus professor at Monash University and as the president of the International Association of Lawyers against Nuclear Arms.
Markandey Katju is an Indian jurist and former judge of Supreme Court of India who served as chairman for the Press Council of India from 2011 to 2014. He is the son of politician Shiva Nath Katju and grandson of Kailash Nath Katju. He is the founder and patron of the Indian Reunification Association (IRA),an organisation that advocates for the peaceful reunification of what is now Pakistan and Bangladesh with India under a secular government.
Mohammad Hidayatullah was the 11th Chief Justice of India serving from 25 February 1968 to 16 December 1970,and the sixth vice president of India,serving from 31 August 1979 to 30 August 1984. He had also served as the acting president of India from 20 July 1969 to 24 August 1969 and from 6 October 1982 to 31 October 1982 and from 25 July 1983 to 25 July 1983 and from 25 July 1984 to 25 July 1984. He is regarded as an eminent jurist,scholar,educationist,author and linguist.
Mehr Chand Mahajan was an Indian jurist and politician who was the third chief justice of the Supreme Court of India. Prior to that he was the prime minister of the state of Jammu and Kashmir during the reign of Maharaja Hari Singh and played a key role in the accession of the state to India. He was the Indian National Congress nominee on the Radcliffe Commission that defined the boundaries of India and Pakistan.
Mufti Baha-ud-Din Farooqi was a Kashmiri lawyer,jurist and political figure who served as the 12th Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir.
Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade was a Brazilian jurist and international judge. He was appointed as judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) from 6 February 2009. He was reelected to the Court in December 2017,and took office for his second term on 6 February 2018,serving until his death in 2022.
Prafullachandra Natwarlal Bhagwati was the 17th Chief Justice of India,serving from 12 July 1985 until his retirement on 20 December 1986. He introduced the concepts of public interest litigation and absolute liability in India,and for this reason is held,along with Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer,to be a pioneer of judicial activism in the country. He is the longest-served supreme court judge in India.
Pavani Parameswara Rao was a Senior Advocate practising in the Supreme Court of India. Widely considered a doyen of Constitutional Law,he had argued a number of landmark cases before the Supreme Court. He died on 13 September 2017 in a private hospital in South Delhi following a cardiac arrest,India.
Colin Gonsalves is a designated Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India and the founder of Human Rights Law Network (HRLN). He specializes in human rights protection,labour law and public interest law. He has been awarded Right Livelihood Award for the year 2017 for "his tireless and innovative use of public interest litigation over three decades to secure fundamental human rights for India’s most marginalised and vulnerable citizens." Considered a pioneer in the field of public interest litigation in India,he has brought several cases dealing with economic,social and cultural rights. Most of these cases,decided by the Supreme Court,have been set as precedents.
Ram Prakash Sethi was an Indian judge who served as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. He began practicing law in 1961. Sethi was enrolled as Pleader in 1961,as Vakil in 1962,and as advocate in 1967. He practiced law for 25 years. Before elevation to the Jammu &Kashmir High Court on 30 May 1986,was Special Public Prosecutor for cases under Jammu &Kashmir Enemy Agents Ordinance,appointed Additional Advocate General of Jammu &Kashmir State in 1975 but resigned after nine months. Was the Standing Counsel of various prestigious organizations and institutions such as the University of Jammu,Jammu &Kashmir Financial Corporation,represented State of Jammu &Kashmir in the Supreme Court in the review matter of Keshwanand Bharti's case.
Saiyed Saghir Ahmad was a judge of the Supreme Court of India.
Pankaj Mithal is a Judge of The Supreme Court of India. He is the former Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court. Previously,he has also served as the Chief Justice of the Jammu &Kashmir and Ladakh High Court and Judge of the Allahabad High Court.
Justice Gita Mittal is a retired Indian judge. She is the former Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and the first woman judge to serve in that capacity. She has also served as the Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court while she was serving as a Judge of the Delhi High Court.
H. K. Sema is an Indian jurist and former judge of the Supreme Court of India. He has also served as the chairperson of Uttar Pradesh Human Rights Commission.
