Tarlok Singh (died 10 December 2005 [1] ) was member of the Planning Commission of India and a civil servant.

Singh studied at London School of Economics. He served on the Planning Commission of India from its inception until his retirement in 1967. He was a member of the Indian Civil Service from 1937 to 1962. He wrote India's first five year plan.

Singh was also the first Private Secretary to Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. He was the Director General of Rehabilitation in the Punjab responsible for the resettlement of refugees [2] and served as the UNICEF Deputy Executive Director (Planning) from 1970 to 1974. [3]

He was the first Chairman of the Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (who sponsor an annual memorial lecture in his name [1] ) and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan (2000), [4] the Padma Bhushan (1962) [5] and the Padma Shri in 1954 by the President of India. [6]

Singh was also awarded the Soderstrom Medal for Economics in 1970 by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science in Stockholm.

His books included Poverty and Social Change, Land Resettlement Manual for Displaced Persons, The Planning Process, Towards an Integrated Society, and India's Development Experience.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. Instituted on 2 January 1954, the award is given for "distinguished service of a high order...without distinction of race, occupation, position or sex." The Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is an annual combined standardized exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) to recruit officers to various engineering services under the Government of India. It is held in four categories: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication. The exam has three stages comprising objective, subjective and personality tests. The various services are often informally known as Indian Engineering Services (IES).

Kalpathi Ramakrishna Ramanathan was an Indian physicist and meteorologist. He was the first Director of Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. From 1954 to 1957, Ramanathan was President of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). Ramanathan was awarded Padma Bhushan in 1965 and Padma Vibhushan in 1976.

Jasbir Singh Bajaj [September 26, 1936-January 8, 2019] was an Indian physician and diabetologist. In 2009, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian award, for his outstanding contribution to the medical sciences and research, and his efforts to improve the healthcare delivery system. Earlier he was decorated with the Padma Shri in 1981 and the Padma Bhushan in 1982. He was the ninth person in the country to receive the award for services in the field of medicine and research, and one of the very few persons to receive all 3 Padma awards.

Sardara Singh Johl is an Indian agriculture economist, writer, politician and the chancellor of the Central University of Punjab. A former National Professor of Agricultural Economics of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, he served as the vice chancellor of the Punjabi University and Punjab Agricultural University during different tenures and chaired the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices set up by the Government of India. He is a former director of the Central Board of Governors of the Reserve Bank of India and a former consultant to international bodies such as Food and Agriculture Organization, World Bank and United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2004, for his contributions to Agriculture and agriculture education.

Narinder Singh Randhawa (1927–1996) was an Indian agricultural scientist, writer and the director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). He was the president of the Indian Society of Soil Science during 1980–81 term and was a recipient of National Citizen Award and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1989, for his contributions to agricultural science.

Bharat Goenka is an Indian businessman and the co-founder and managing director of Tally Solutions. In 2020, he received the Padma Shri from the Government of India for his contribution in the field of trade and industry.
