The All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots (ACFTC) is a people's organization composed mainly of Taiwanese residing in the People's Republic of China whose official aim is Chinese unification. [1]
The ACFTC was established on 22 December 1981 in Beijing. [2]
Starting in 2017,the ACFTC took on a more prominent role in the CCP's united front efforts directed at Taiwan. [3]
During the run-up to the 2024 Taiwanese presidential election, the ACFTC coordinated editorial attacks against presidential candidate Lai Ching-te,framing him as "pro-war". [4]
In 2024,Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council banned its citizens from working at the ACFTC due to national security concerns. [5] [6]
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is a centre to centre-left Taiwanese nationalist political party in Taiwan, officially the Republic of China (ROC). It is currently the major ruling party in Taiwan, controlling both the presidency and the central government, while also being the dominant party in the Pan-Green Coalition, one of the two main political groups in Taiwan.
Foreign relations of the Republic of China (ROC),more commonly known as Taiwan, are accomplished by efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China,a cabinet-level ministry of the Government of the Republic of China. As of January 2024,the ROC has formal diplomatic relations with 11 of the 193 United Nations member states and with the Holy See,which governs the Vatican City State. In addition to these relations, the ROC also maintains unofficial relations with 59 UN member states, one self-declared state (Somaliland),three territories (Guam,Hong Kong, and Macau),and the European Union via its representative offices and consulates. In 2021,the Government of the Republic of China had the 33rd largest diplomatic network in the world with 110 offices.
Chinese unification, also known as Cross-Strait unification or Chinese reunification,is the potential unification of territories currently controlled,or claimed,by the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China ("Taiwan") under one political entity, possibly the formation of a political union between the two republics. Together with full Taiwan independence, unification is one of the main proposals to address questions on the political status of Taiwan, which is a central focus of Cross-Strait relations.
"One country, two systems" is a constitutional principle of the People's Republic of China (PRC) describing the governance of the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.
One China is a phrase describing the relationship between the People's Republic of China (PRC) based on Mainland China, and the Republic of China (ROC) based on the Taiwan Area. "One China" asserts that there is only one de jure Chinese nation despite the de facto division between the two rival governments in the aftermath of the Chinese Civil War. The term may refer,in alphabetical order,to one of the following:
Ma Ying-jeou is a Taiwanese politician who served as the 6th president of the Republic of China from 2008 to 2016. Previously,he served as the 14th justice minister from 1993 to 1996 and mayor of Taipei from 1998 to 2006. He served as chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) from 2005 to 2007 and from 2009 to 2014.
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) is a cabinet-level administrative agency under the Executive Yuan of the Republic of China (Taiwan). The MAC is responsible for the planning, development, and implementation of the Cross-Strait relations policy which targets mainland China,Hong Kong and Macau.
The 1992 Consensus is a political term referring to the alleged outcome of a meeting in 1992 between the semiofficial representatives of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-led People's Republic of China (PRC) in mainland China and the Kuomintang (KMT)-led Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan. They are often credited as creating a diplomatic basis for semi-official cross-strait exchanges which began in the early 1990s and is a precondition set by the PRC for engaging in cross-strait dialogue.
Censorship in Taiwan was in effect when the government exercised strict media control during the martial law period in Taiwan from 1949 to 1987,carried over from the Nationalists which governed mainland China prior to retreating to Taiwan in 1949. Under martial law,the Kuomintang-ruled government engaged in censorship to prevent criticism of it,as part of its opposition to certain cultural products, and as a feature of anti-communist campaigns against the Chinese Communist Party. Media control was greatly relaxed when the state moved away from authoritarianism in 1987.
Cross-strait relations are the political and economic relations between mainland China and Taiwan across the Taiwan Strait. Due to the existing controversy over the status of Taiwan, they are also not defined as diplomatic relations by both sides.
The Taiwan Entry Permit (入臺證),formally the Exit &Entry Permit Taiwan Republic of China,is an entry permit issued by the National Immigration Agency in Taiwan for Chinese citizens from mainland,Hong Kong, and Macau to enter and exit the Taiwan Area.
The People's Republic of China passport is a passport issued to citizens of the People's Republic of China for the purpose of international travel, and entitles its bearer to the protection of China's consular officials overseas.
The All-China Youth Federation is a people's organization founded on 4 May 1949 that represents many youth groups in China, and is managed by the Communist Youth League. Former paramount leaders and General Secretaries of the Chinese Communist Party Hu Jintao and Jiang Zemin were both members.
The visa policy of mainland China deals with the requirements which a foreign citizen wishing to enter the mainland of the People's Republic of China must meet to obtain a visa from one of the Chinese diplomatic missions, which is a permit to travel to,enter, and remain in the country. Visa exemptions are based on bilateral agreements and unilateral decisions.
Lai Ching-te,also known as William Lai,is a Taiwanese politician and former physician who is currently serving as the 8th president of the Republic of China (Taiwan) since May 2024. He is the third member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to assume the office of president and the first whose predecessor was also a DPP member. He is also the third incumbent vice president to succeed to the presidency and the first to assume the office through election instead of immediate succession. He has also served as the chair of the DPP since 2023.
The united front in Taiwan is an aspect of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Government of China's larger united front strategy, applied to Taiwan,to achieve unification. It relies on the presence of pro-Beijing sympathizers in Taiwan combined with a carrot-and-stick approach of threatening war with Taiwan while offering opportunities for business and cultural exchanges. According to officials of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, the CCP has long relied on organized crime as part of its united front tactics in Taiwan. Critics who are negative of Chinese unification have linked the term "united front" to Chinese imperialism and expansionism.
The China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification (CCPPNR) is an umbrella organization, founded in 1988,by the United Front Work Department of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to promote unification between mainland China and Taiwan on terms defined solely by the People's Republic of China (PRC). Unification is couched in a one country, two systems framework, though critics categorize it as annexation. According to scholar Anne-Marie Brady,in addition to promoting unification,"the organization also engages in a range of activities which support Chinese foreign policy goals, including block-voting and fund-raising for ethnic Chinese political candidates who agree to support their organization's agenda." The main council oversees over 200 chapters in multiple countries.
Mass surveillance in the People's Republic of China (PRC) is the network of monitoring systems used by the Chinese central government to monitor Chinese citizens. It is primarily conducted through the government, although corporate surveillance in connection with the Chinese government has been reported to occur. China monitors its citizens through Internet surveillance, camera surveillance, and through other digital technologies. It has become increasingly widespread and grown in sophistication under General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Xi Jinping's administration.
The Straits Forum is an annual forum between Mainland China and Taiwan which started in 2009. It is the largest non-political platform which promotes grassroots interaction, economic and trade exchanges and cultural integration.
Relations between the government of Hong Kong SAR of the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Taiwan Area of the Republic of China (ROC) encompass both when Hong Kong was under British rules or when the Republic of China controlled mainland China and afterwards the ROC fled to Taiwan. This is also a part of the Cross-strait relations.
