The Bakar mockery (Italian Beffa di Buccari), or Bakar raid, was a raid of the Italian Navy ( Regia Marina ) in the last year of World War I. [1] Whilst it had little material effect on the war at sea, it was a particularly bold venture which had a welcome effect on Italian morale, which was at a low ebb following the defeat at Caporetto a few months prior.
In World War I, the Kingdom of Italy fought on the side of the Allies against the Central Powers, including Austria-Hungary and the German Empire. Italy's campaign on land against the Austro-Hungarian Army had been stalemated for two-and-a-half years, with little movement, though at the cost of huge casualties.
At sea, equality with the Austro-Hungarian Navy in capital ships had led to a deadlock in the Adriatic Sea, with neither side wishing to risk their loss; thus the Adriatic campaign was a contest of small ships, of raids and patrols, of sudden actions by night, and of losses to mines and submarines. In this arena, the Italian Regia Marina ("Royal Navy") had developed a commando force of MAS fast motor torpedo boats which attracted men with a buccaneering spirit.
In November 1917 the deadlock on land on the Italian front was upset by an Austro-Hungarian offensive, supported by German forces made available by the collapse of the Russian Empire on the Eastern Front. In the resulting Battle of Caporetto, the Italian Royal Army was defeated, and in a period of three weeks the front was pushed back 50 miles (80 km), to within striking distance of Venice.
The Italians conceived the Bakar Raid as an attack on Austro-Hungarian shipping in the harbor at Bakar (known to the Italians as Buccari), a port on the coast of Austria-Hungary in the enclosed Bay of Bakar near Fiume (now Rijeka) at the head of the Kvarner Gulf. The Austro-Hungarians believed Bakar was beyond Italy's ability to attack, as it lay 80 kilometres (50 mi; 43 nmi) up a sheltered waterway, so the Italians intended the raid as a psychological, as well as a physical, assault.
The operation was led by Capitano di fregata Frigate Captain Costanzo Ciano, and comprised three MAS boats, with a total crew of 30 men. One of the boats, MAS 96, was commanded by Tenente (Lieutenant) Luigi Rizzo, who later led the attack on the Austro-Hungarian battleship SMS Szent István off Premuda in June 1918. Also on board was the Italian nationalist and irredentist poet Gabriele D'Annunzio.
On 10 February 1918 the three MAS boats, under tow by torpedo boats to conserve fuel and escorted by two destroyers and a scout cruiser, set out from their base and at 22:00, after 14 hours' steaming, entered the Farasina Channel, the waterway between Istria and the island of Cherso (now Cres).
Several hours later, having evaded Austro-Hungarian patrols and the shore batteries at Porto Re (now Kraljevica), the flotilla arrived outside the Bay of Bakar. The MAS boats slipped their tows and entered the bay as their escort withdrew. At about 1 nautical mile (1.9 km; 1.2 mi) from the target, the MAS boats switched from gasoline engines to silenced electric motors for the final approach. As they closed with their targets, the three boats fired a total of six torpedoes. However, their boldness was not rewarded, and the torpedoes scored no hits; five became entangled in nets or otherwise failed to explode, while the sixth exploded harmlessly, slightly damaging a cargo ship and raising the alarm.
Despite the alerted enemy, the MAS boats escaped and, making a dash down the channel, regained the open sea where they were reunited with their escort.
Despite the lack of material success, the raid was a considerable fillip to Italian morale, as well as a psychological blow to the Austro-Hungarians. In this, it resembled the Doolittle raid on Tokyo in April 1942 during the Pacific campaign of World War II and prefigured the Flight over Vienna, D'Annunzio's August 1918 air raid on the Austrian capital. The raid became known in Italy as the Beffa di Buccari ("Bakar Mockery") and was heavily publicized by D'Annunzio, who understood its propaganda value; it was celebrated in several booklets at the time.

Cesare Rossarol was an Italian scout cruiser. Commissioned into service in the Italian Regia Marina in 1915, she served during World War I, participating in the Adriatic campaign until she was sunk in 1918.
Audace was a destroyer of the Italian Regia Marina. Originally, the Imperial Japanese Navy ordered her as the Urakaze-classKawakaze, but the Japanese sold her to the Kingdom of Italy in 1916 while she was under construction. Commissioned in 1917, she played an active role in the Adriatic campaign of World War I. During the interwar period, she operated in the Adriatic, Aegean, Mediterranean, and Red seas and was reclassified as a torpedo boat in 1929.

She saw active service during World War I, performing convoy, patrol, escort and minesweeping tasks, anti-submarine operations and shore bombardment missions. In 1917 the suffixes of all Austro-Hungarian torpedo boats were removed, and thereafter she was referred to as 87. She was part of the escort force for the Austro-Hungarian dreadnought Szent István during the action that resulted in the sinking of that ship by Italian torpedo boats in June 1918, and rescued many of her crew.

The vessel was in the Bocche di Cattaro during the short-lived mutiny by Austro-Hungarian sailors in early February 1918; members of her crew raised the red flag but undertook no other mutinous actions. 77 was part of the escort force for the Austro-Hungarian dreadnought Szent István during the action that resulted in the sinking of that ship by Italian torpedo boats in June 1918.

The Novara class was a class of three scout cruisers built for the Austro-Hungarian Navy. Named for the Battle of Novara, the class comprised SMS Saida, SMS Helgoland, and SMS Novara. Construction started on the ships shortly before World War I; Saida and Helgoland were both laid down in 1911, Novara followed in 1912. Two of the three warships were built in the Ganz-Danubius shipyard in Fiume; Saida was built in the Cantiere Navale Triestino shipyard in Monfalcone. The Novara-class ships hold the distinction for being the last cruisers constructed by the Austro-Hungarian Navy.
SMS Admiral Spaun was a scout cruiser built for the Austro-Hungarian Navy. Named for Admiral and Marinekommandant Hermann von Spaun, Admiral Spaun was constructed shortly before World War I. Laid down at the Pola Navy Yard in May 1908, the cruiser was launched in October 1909. Admiral Spaun was commissioned into the Navy just over a year later, in November 1910. The first ship of the Austro-Hungarian Navy to be constructed with steam turbines, her design later influenced the construction of the Novara-class cruisers.
Giuseppe Cesare Abba was an Italian Rosolino Pilo-class destroyer. Commissioned into service in the Italian Regia Marina in 1915, she served in World War I, playing an active role in the Adriatic campaign. Reclassified as a torpedo boat in 1929, she participated in the Mediterranean and Adriatic campaigns of World War II. In 1943, she switched to the Allied side, operating as part of the Italian Co-belligerent Navy for the remainder of the war. She served in the postwar Italian Navy and was reclassified as a minesweeper in 1954. She was stricken in 1958.
Francesco Nullo was an Italian Rosolino Pilo-class destroyer. Commissioned into service in the Italian Regia Marina in 1915, she served in World War I, participating in the Adriatic campaign. She supported Gabriele D'Annunzio′s actions in Fiume in 1920, and was renamed Fratelli Cairoli in 1921. Reclassified as a torpedo boat in 1929, she served in the Mediterranean campaign of World War II until she was sunk in 1940.
Pilade Bronzetti was an Italian Rosolino Pilo-class destroyer. Commissioned into service in the Italian Regia Marina in 1916, she served in World War I, participating in the Adriatic campaign. Her crew supported Gabriele D'Annunzio′s actions in Fiume in 1920, and as a consequence she was renamed Giuseppe Dezza in 1921. Reclassified as a torpedo boat in 1929, she took part in the Mediterranean campaign of World War II until the Italian armistice with the Allies, prompting Nazi Germany to capture her. Subsequently operating in the Kriegsmarine as TA35, she participated in the Adriatic Campaign of World War II until she was sunk in 1944.
Animoso was the second and final Audace-class destroyer of the Italian Regia Marina. Commissioned in 1914, she played an active role in the Adriatic campaign of World War I. Badly damaged by an accidental explosion in 1921, she was stricken in 1923.
Ardito was the lead ship of the Italian Ardito-class destroyers. Commissioned into service in the Italian Regia Marina in 1913, she served in World War I, playing an active role in the Adriatic campaign. Reclassified as a torpedo boat in 1929, she was discarded in 1931.

Giuseppe Sirtori was the lead ship of the Giuseppe Sirtori-class destroyers. Commissioned into service in the Italian Regia Marina in 1916, she served during World War I, participating in the Adriatic campaign. During the interwar period, she took part in operations related to the Corfu incident in 1923 and was reclassified as a torpedo boat in 1929. During World War II, she took part in the Mediterranean campaign and later the Adriatic campaign until she was scuttled in 1943.
Giovanni Acerbi was the second of four Giuseppe Sirtori-class destroyers built for the Italian Regia Marina during World War I. She played an active part in the later stages of that war's Adriatic campaign, including a significant role in that campaign's largest surface action, the Battle of the Strait of Otranto in 1917. Reclassified as a torpedo boat in 1929, she was serving in the Red Sea Flotilla when Italy entered World War II in June 1940. She was disabled in September 1940, stripped of her armament, and either scuttled or sunk in 1941.
Vincenzo Giordano Orsini was the third of four Giuseppe Sirtori-class destroyers built for the Italian Regia Marina during World War I. Commissioned in 1917, she participated in the later stages of that war's Adriatic campaign. Reclassified as a torpedo boat in 1929, she was serving in the Red Sea Flotilla when Italy entered World War II in June 1940. She was scuttled in 1941 to prevent her capture by Allied forces during the East African campaign.
Aquila was an Italian Regia Marina scout cruiser in commission from 1917 to 1937. She was laid down for the Royal Romanian Navy as the destroyer Vifor but the Kingdom of Italy requisitioned her while she was under construction. She served in the Regia Marina during World War I, seeing action in the later stages of the Adriatic campaign. In 1928, she took part in rescue operations in the Adriatic Sea for the sunken Italian submarine F 14.
