Ben Lilly Conservation Area is a 247-acre tract of protected area located in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, USA. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) became the new owner in 2013.

Contents

Name

The conservation area received its name from notorious big game hunter Ben Lilly, who was a guide for Teddy Roosevelt, when he hunted bear in the Tensas River swamp in 1907. [1]

Description

The 247-acre conservation area is bordered by the 503-acre Chemin-A-Haut State Park to the north [2] and Bayou Bartholomew makes a horseshoe boundary around the east, south and west sides. The conservation area is accessible through the state park from US 425, north of Bastrop, Louisiana, or by boat and a boat ramp is planned. [3]

Shared name

The conservation area shares the name with the Ben Lilly campground located in the Gila National Forest. [4]

Kisatchie National Forest

Kisatchie National Forest, the only National forest in Louisiana, United States, is located in the forested piney hills and hardwood bottoms of seven central and northern parishes. It is part of the Cenozoic uplands and has large areas of longleaf pine forests. It is one of the largest pieces of natural landscape in Louisiana, with some 604,000 acres (2,440 km2) of public land, more than half of which is vital longleaf pine and flatwoods vegetation. These support many rare plant and animal species. There are also rare habitats, such as hillside seepage bogs and calcareous prairies. The forest also contains and provides a buffer for the Kisatchie Hills Wilderness, a nationally designated wilderness area that contributes to protecting biodiversity of the coastal plain region of the United States.

Chemin-A-Haut State Park

Chemin-à-Haut means "High Road" in French. Much of the park is on a high bluff overlooking winding Bayou Bartholomew. Chemin-A-Haut was one of the earliest additions to the Louisiana State Park system.

Lake Claiborne State Park

Lake Claiborne State Park is a recreation site located in Claiborne Parish, northwestern Louisiana, USA. It was opened in 1974 and is 643 acres (2.60 km2) in size. The park provides access to scenic Lake Claiborne, a 6,400-acre (26 km2) man-made water body formed by damming Bayou D'Arbonne. Guests may stay at 10 cabins and 89 campsites on the Park grounds. Boats and canoes are available to rent. There is a large swimming beach, boat launch, Nature Center and numerous interpretive programs. The entrance to Lake Claiborne State Park is located 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Homer on Louisiana Highway 146.

Park Road 1 is a Park Road located in Bastrop and Buescher state parks, in the central region of the U.S. state of Texas. The highway is approximately 33.6 miles (54.1 km) long, and passes through mainly rural park land. PR 1 also includes most main roads in the two parks. Because of this, the highway has been divided into five different routes; they are PR 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, and 1E. PR 1C makes up most of the route, while three of the segments are less than a mile long. The route was first drafted by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in 1933, as a scenic drive between the two parks. It was designated in 1937 as one of the state's originally designated Park Roads and has been extended and altered multiple times since.

Clear Creek Wildlife Management Area

Clear Creek Wildlife Management Area is a 54,269-acre tract of protected area located in Vernon Parish, Louisiana. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) leases the land from Hancock Timber.
