Berri Barmera Council is a local government area in the Riverland region of South Australia.

It includes the towns of Barmera, Berri, Cobdogla, Glossop, Katarapko, Loveday and Winkie, and parts of Monash and Overland Corner. [4]

History

The Berri Barmera Council was created on 1 October 1996 with the amalgamation of the District Council of Barmera and the District Council of Berri. [5]

The District Council of Berri had been created in 1922, 11 years after the town was proclaimed. Its first major project was to provide reliable electricity to the entire area. It bought the Berri Electric Supply Company in 1936 to facilitate this, and later sold it to the Electricity Trust of South Australia, a state government agency.

The District Council of Barmera had been created as the "District Council of Cobdogla" on 17 June 1925 and been renamed Barmera in 1937. Barmera had been a soldier settlement community after World War I.

Winkie is a locality in South Australia, around 11 km southwest of the Riverland town of Berri, and around the same distance southeast of Barmera. It is close to the Murray River, which passes through Berri. At the 2016 census, Winkie had a population of 341.

Borrika is a town and locality in South Australia. It is on the Karoonda Highway 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) east of Karoonda, and was on the Barmera railway line, later known as the Loxton railway line when the end of the main line closed but the Loxton branch remained open until 2015 and has now also closed.

Loveday is a town and locality in the Riverland region of South Australia, located east of the Moorook Game Reserve, 6 km south-west of Barmera, and 30 km north-west of Loxton. Administratively it is part of the Berri Barmera Council LGA. At the 2006 census, Loveday had a population of 1,071. During World War II, it housed the largest internment camp complex in Australia, with some 5,000 detainees.

Moorook Game Reserve is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia covering the floodplain on the south side of the River Murray in the localities of Kingston-on-Murray and Moorook immediately south of the section of the Sturt Highway that passes between the towns of Kingston-on-Murray in the west and Cobdogla in the east. Katarapko is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Riverland about 188 kilometres north-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about 6.6 kilometres (4.1 mi) north of Loxton.

Spectacle Lake is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Riverland on the northern side of the Murray River about 180 kilometres north-east of the Adelaide city centre and about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) northwest of Loxton. Its boundaries were created in August 1999 along with the selection of its name which was derived from the Spectacle Lakes, a lake system which is situated within the locality on the floodplain of the Murray River. In 2014, a portion of Spectacle Lake was removed and added to the adjoining locality of Loveday to ensure the full extent of Nynes Island is within Loveday. As of 2012, the land use within Spectacle Lake was divided between conservation and agriculture with the former being concerned with the floodplain. Spectacle Lake is located within the federal division of Barker, the state electoral district of Chaffey and the unincorporated area of South Australia.

Gerard is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the Riverland on the northern side of the Murray River about 182 kilometres north-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) northwest of Loxton.
