As of the census [4] of 2000, there were 1,051 people, 427 households, and 284 families residing in the village. The population density was 777.7 inhabitants per square mile (300.3/km2). There were 458 housing units at an average density of 338.9 per square mile (130.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.76% White, 0.38% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.19% Asian, and 0.57% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.48% of the population.
There were 427 households, out of which 32.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older.
