Concordia Studio is an American film production and television production company. The company has produced Boys State (2020), Time (2020), A Thousand Cuts (2020), Procession (2021), Swan Song (2021), and Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie (2023).

History

In January 2020, it was announced Davis Guggenheim and Jonathan King, had launched Concordia Studio in partnership with Laurene Powell-Jobs and Emerson Collective. [1] The company will focus on developing, producing and financing scripted and non-scripted projects. [2]

The company's first projects Boys State , Time , A Thousand Cuts , and Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets all premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. [3] Boys State would be acquired by A24 and Apple TV+ for $12 million, [4] and Time would go on to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. [5] [6]

In 2021, Concordia produced Summer of Soul directed by Questlove, which would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, BAFTA Award for Best Documentary and Grammy Award for Best Music Film. [7] [8] [9] That same year, Concordia produced its first narrative project Swan Song directed by Benjamin Cleary for Apple TV+. [10]

In 2023, Concordia produced Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie directed by Guggenheim for Apple TV+, which was nominated for several Primetime Emmy Awards including the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, [11] and Working: What We Do All Day for Netflix alongside Higher Ground Productions, directed by Caroline Suh. [12]

Fellowship

Concordia also offers a fellowship The Concordia Fellowship for documentary filmmakers, developing and receiving financial backing for projects either feature or episodic, and career advancement. [13] Fellows include Cinque Northern, Tracy Jarrett, Giselle Bailey, Alice Gu, Shalini Kantayya, Christine Turner, Elizabeth Lo, Omar Mullick, Paula Eiselt, Cynthia Hill, Jon Kasbe, Joshua Altman, Garrett Bradley, Isabel Castro, Nadia Hallgren, and Bing Liu. The fellowship has produced Burden of Proof for HBO, [16] Mija for Disney+, [17] and Under G-d for POV, [18]

Matt Tyrnauer is an American film director. He directed the documentary feature Valentino: The Last Emperor (2009), which was short listed for an Oscar nomination in 2010, Citizen Jane: Battle for the City (2016), the Emmy nominated, Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood (2017), the 2018 documentary Studio 54 detailing New York's famed Studio 54 nightclub, Where's My Roy Cohn? (2019), and the Showtime four-part series, The Reagans (2020). Tyrnauer also developed, and executive produced, with producing partner Corey Reeser, the docuseries Home, directing its Hong Kong episode, about the Gary Chang's Domestic Transformer home. The nine-part series premiered on Apple TV Plus in April 2020. Currently, Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood is being adapted as a narrative film, with Tyrnauer and Reeser producing, Luca Guadagnino directing and Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg writing the script. Summer of Soul is a 2021 American independent documentary film about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, directed by Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson in his directorial debut. It had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival on January 28, 2021, where it won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the documentary categories. It had a limited theatrical release in the U.S. by Searchlight Pictures on June 25, 2021, before expanding and being released for streaming on Hulu the next weekend.
