TriStar Productions, Inc. (TSP) is an American film and television production company, a division of TriStar Pictures and a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and former 20th Century Fox chairman Tom Rothman. [4]

The company shares its name and logo with the current TriStar Pictures distribution label of Sony Pictures, [4] under which TriStar Productions' four films per year will be released joining the other titles released from Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions. [2] [5] The television programming however, will be produced for Sony Pictures Television. [2] The TriStar name was selected as Rothman considers himself a film buff, giving the company its historical name, and counting on the good will of the Hollywood creative types to give the unit an edge. [5]

History

It was jointly announced on August 1, 2013, by Rothman, Michael Lynton, the CEO of Sony Entertainment and co-chairman and CEO of SPE, and Amy Pascal, co-chairwoman of SPE. The venture was launched on September 1 and Rothman would hold an equity share in the venture with the ability to bring in other outside investments. [4] [5] TriStar Productions' first deal was for the autobiography To Walk the Clouds, which is about Philippe Petit, a French high wire walker who walked between the Twin Towers in 1974. [6]

In February 2015, it was announced that Rothman will replace Amy Pascal as chairman of Sony Pictures's Motion Picture Group. Rothman will continue to oversee the properties he greenlit at TriStar. [7]

After a purchase by Sony Pictures Entertainment, both companies Columbia Pictures Television and TriStar Television merged and formed Columbia TriStar Television on February 21, 1994. The television studio was relaunched twice, most recently as a specialty label for Sony Pictures Television. The entity was originally a sister company of Columbia Pictures Television, which was shut down in 2001. Sony shut down the division again in May 2024.

She served as the Chairperson of the Motion Pictures Group of Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and Co-Chairperson of SPE, including Sony Pictures Television, from 2006 until 2015. She has overseen the production and distribution of many films and television programs, and was co-chairperson during the 2014 Sony Pictures hack. The leak uncovered multiple emails from Pascal which were deemed racist including racial jokes aimed at then-President Barack Obama. She left Sony and Pascal later admitted that she was fired from the company.

In this role, Rothman oversees all of the studio's motion picture production and distribution activities worldwide, including Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, Screen Gems, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Sony Pictures Animation, Sony Pictures Classics, 3000 Pictures, Sony Pictures International Productions, Stage 6 Films and AFFIRM Films. Rothman joined Sony Pictures in late 2013 as chairman of TriStar and in 2015 was promoted to Chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, followed by the release in 2017 and 2018 of titles such as Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Venom, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Peter Rabbit, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Ricki and the Flash is a 2015 American musical comedy-drama film directed by Jonathan Demme and written by Diablo Cody, about a woman who leaves her family to become a rock star and later gets a chance to make amends. The film stars Meryl Streep, Mamie Gummer, Kevin Kline, Sebastian Stan, Rick Springfield, and Audra McDonald. The film marks Streep and Kline's third collaboration after Sophie's Choice (1982) and A Prairie Home Companion (2006). It was Demme's final narrative film before his death in April 2017.

The perpetrators then employed a variant of the Shamoon wiper malware to erase Sony's computer infrastructure.
