The East Coast Integrated Depot (ECID) is a large integrated bus and train depot located in Changi that will serve three Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) lines in Singapore, the East West Line (EWL), the Downtown Line (DTL) and the Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). As of 27 December 2023, it is currently under construction, with expected completion in 2025.

The depot will be located beside the current site of Changi Depot, which will be demolished.^[1] It will be the first MRT depot in Singapore to serve three MRT lines and also the third to be integrated with a bus depot in Singapore after the Tuas Depot on the East West Line and Gali Batu Depot on the Downtown Line.

With this design, it is estimated that there will be a 44 hectares of land will be saved, equivalent to approximately 60 football fields. The depot will be able to house approximately >200 trains of varying sizes and lengths and >550 buses within the site.^[2]

History

Contract T301 for the construction of East Coast Integrated Depot, reception tunnels and its associated facilities was awarded to GS Engineering & Construction Corporation at a sum of S$1.99 billion on 21 March 2016. Construction began in 2016 and was initially planned for completion in 2024.^[1]^[3]^[4]

On 20 September 2022, the Land Transport Authority updated that structural works has reached 75% and the depot will be operational in 2025.^[5]

Description

The East Coast Integrated Depot consists of a multi-level train depot and a multi-level bus depot.

Train depot

The train depot will have three levels containing three separate depots for three different MRT lines. The underground portion will house a 66-track depot for the Downtown Line, and will be brought into use following the opening of Stage 3e of the line. The at-grade portion will house a 62-track depot for the future Thomson-East Coast Line, to be used following the completion of Stage 5 of the line. Finally, the elevated portion will house a 72-track depot for the East West Line, which will replace the existing Changi Depot. All three depots will operate independently of each other, a first for Singapore, and will be designed to be able to handle trains of different lengths, of 3, 4 and 6 respectively of the lines they operate on.

The facility will be located between Simei station and Tanah Merah station on the East West Line, between Xilin station and Sungei Bedok station on the Downtown Line, and off Sungei Bedok station on the Thomson-East Coast Line. It will also connect to Tanah Merah station on the Thomson-East Coast Line after the Changi Airport Branch is absorbed into the line.

Bus Depot

The bus depot is a separate three-storey structure situated next to the train depot on the same site. Similar to Soon Lee Bus Park and Woodlands Bus Depot, it will contain workshops on the ground level, while the upper two levels will contain parking spaces.

Tanah Merah, is a geographical region located along the south-eastern coast of the East Region of Singapore. Although its boundaries are not exactly clear, it is widely accepted that the term refers to the southern coast of present-day Bedok, Tampines, Changi and Changi Bay.

The Downtown Line (DTL) is a medium-capacity Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore operated by SBS Transit. It runs from Bukit Panjang station in the north-west to Expo station in the east via the Central Area. Coloured blue on the rail map, the line serves 34 stations, all of which are underground. The DTL is the fifth MRT line on the network to be opened and the third line to be entirely underground. It is the second MRT line to be operated by SBS Transit, after the North East Line. The line also serves as an alternative to the East-West MRT Line running parallel from Bugis to Expo MRT Station.

The Thomson–East Coast Line (TEL) is a high-capacity Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore. Coloured brown on the rail map, it is fully underground. When fully completed, the sixth line on the country's MRT network will serve 32 stations over 43 kilometres (27 mi) in length, becoming one of the world's longest driverless rapid transit lines. It runs along a combined north–south and east–west corridor, starting in the north at Woodlands town, passing through Upper Thomson and the towns of Ang Mo Kio and Bishan, heading south to the city-centre at Orchard Road and Marina Bay, subsequently heading eastwards along the eastern coast of the country through Kallang, Marine Parade and southern Bedok before ending at Upper East Coast.

Bayshore MRT station is a future underground Mass Rapid Transit station on the Thomson–East Coast line in Bedok, Singapore, along Bayshore Road.

Bedok South MRT station is a future underground Mass Rapid Transit station on the Thomson–East Coast line in Bedok planning area, Singapore.

Sungei Bedok MRT station is a future underground Mass Rapid Transit interchange and terminal station on the Downtown line and Thomson–East Coast line in Bedok planning area, Singapore. The station is being built east of where Upper East Coast Road becomes Bedok Road, and will serve residents of the Eastwood estate. Nearby facilities include the Bedok Food Centre, Eastwood Centre and the Laguna National Golf & Country Club.

Xilin MRT station is a future underground Mass Rapid Transit station on the Downtown line in Tampines planning area, Singapore. Taking its name from Xilin Avenue which passes overhead, Xilin station serves industries around Changi South, as well as the nearby Tanah Merah Country Club. The station is located at the junction of Xilin Avenue, Changi South Avenue 3 and Laguna Golf Green.
