Chinese dragons have many animal-like forms such as turtles and fish,but are most commonly depicted as snake-like with four legs. Academicians have identified four reliable theories on the origin of the Chinese dragon:snakes,Chinese alligators,thunder worship and nature worship. They traditionally symbolize potent and auspicious powers,particularly control over water.

The Black Tortoise is one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellations. It is usually depicted as a tortoise intertwined with a snake. The pictogram '武' can mean 'martial' or 'warrior.' The two characters 玄and 武do not have any literal meaning of tortoise and snake. But both tortoise and snake are known to hibernate during winter. The image of intertwined tortoise and snake likely symbolizes a state of inner struggle or a state of hibernation,and thus implies the season of winter. So the English translation Black ~ Dark ~ Mysterious Warrior is a more faithful translation.

The Four Holy Beasts are Chinese astronomical and cultural Four Benevolent Animals that are spread in the East Asian cultural sphere. They are mentioned in the Chinese classic Book of Rites and includes the Dragon (龍) in the East,the Qilin (麟) in the West,the Turtle (龜) in the North,and the Phoenix (鳳) in the South.

Gun,also known as Count of Chong,is a figure in Chinese mythology,sometimes noted as the father of Yu the Great,the founder of the Xia dynasty. Gun was appointed to the task of controlling the Great Flood by Emperor Yao on the advice of the Four Mountains. Gun used dykes to try to stop the flooding but the dykes collapsed,killing many people.

Ji Province,also known by its Chinese name Jizhou,was one of the Nine Provinces of ancient China. It is referenced in Chinese historical texts such as the Tribute of Yu,Erya and Rites of Zhou. Tao Huang,courtesy name Shiying,was a Chinese military general and politician in Eastern Wu during the Three Kingdoms period and later for the Jin dynasty (266–420). Tao Huang was most notable for his administration of Jiaozhou for more than twenty years,during the Eastern Wu and Western Jin eras. He was also responsible for Wu's victory against Jin in Jiao between 268 and 271,one of the few major victories Wu had over Jin in the final years of the Three Kingdoms.
Chìdì or Chìshén,also known as the Nándì or Nányuèdàdì,as a human was Shénnóng,who is also the same as Yándì,a function occupied by different gods and god-kings in mytho-history. Shennong is also one of the Three Patrons,specifically the patron of humanity,and the point of intersection of the Three Patrons and Huangdi.
