Hotel Charitone is a historic building located in Chariton, Iowa, United States. Local architect William L. Perkins designed the building in the Neoclassical style. It was his second major commission in town after the Chariton Herald-Patriot Building (1918). [2] Local contractor P.E. Johnson constructed the building. It opened on November 5, 1923, and remained in operation as a hotel with some apartments under various owners. The buildings had fallen into disrepair and was vacant when Hy-Vee, a grocery store chain that had been headquartered in Chariton for years spearheaded the renovation of the building as an act of gratitude for the community's support. [3]

A Hy-Vee Market Grill opened in May 2014, and the upper floors house 12 apartments. The four-story brick structure features three arched windows on the first floor of the west, and two that flank the main entrance on the south elevation. A third window on this side of the building had been converted into a doorway into the hotel's restaurant by 1935. [2] A brick parapet with stone trim caps the structure, and decorative brickwork descends from the cornice on the corners. A neon sign was added in the 1930s. The building was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. [1] In 2014 it was included as a contributing property in the Lucas County Courthouse Square Historic District. [4]

Merrero Building United States historic place

The Merrero Building is a historic building located in Maquoketa, Iowa, United States. It was built in 1918 to replace a three-story brick building on the same location that was damaged in a fire the previous year. While there was a debate about whether to rebuild or build new, it appears they built a new building. It is a two-story structure with three storefronts on the main level. It is significant as an example of early 20th-century commercial design and material. The exterior is composed of white glazed brick with paired windows on the second floor. An old fashioned Italianate metal cornice caps the main facade. While it looks out of place, historic photos show that it is part of the original design. Marble panels were originally located below the display windows on the main floor. The storefront on the left has been altered, but the other two are originals. Transoms above the second floor windows, and the prism glass transoms above the storefronts remain in place, but have been covered. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Hotel Greenfield United States historic place

Hotel Greenfield is a boutique hotel located in Greenfield, Iowa, United States. Designed by architect William Gordon, it was completed in 1920 by the Newton Construction Co. Local boosters had the hotel built for $65,000 as a replacement for the Commercial Hotel, which was located on the same spot. The three-story brick structure features a symmetrical facade, round arched windows on the first floor, a projecting classical entrance with columns in the Doric order, and a denticulated brick cornice. The hotel had become dated by the 1970s, and started to decline in significance. ADCO Enterprises bought it in 2010 and renovated it. They added the adjacent Adair County Democrat-Adair County Free Press Building at the same time. It houses the restaurant, lounge, two hotel suites, and the laundry and housekeeping facilities. The building was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011. In 2014 it was included as a contributing property in the Greenfield Public Square Historic District.

The Opera House's parapet has a triangular pediment with "Opera House" on a rectangular base, and the Hetherington Block has a similar feature in a simplified form. Citizens approved a local tax to support the library the following year.

Chariton City Hall and Fire Station United States historic place

Chariton City Hall and Fire Station is located in Chariton, Iowa, United States. The combination building was designed by city engineer William L. Perkins, who had become known for designing residential and public buildings. The new facility came about because of the inadequate wood frame facilities they shared, and it was underscored by a fire that destroyed the center section of the south side of the town square in March 1930. While its dedication did not take place until March 1932, the city took possession of the completed facility in December 1931. An addition for the fire department was completed in 1979. While the asymmetrical facade and the recessed limestone surround of the main entrance reflects the Art Deco style that was popular at the time, the building's styling reflects the Neoclassical style. It is primarily found in the pilasters that flank the entrance, and the low relief emblems and festoons on the stone panels. The city hall\fire station was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. In 2014 it was included as a contributing property in the Lucas County Courthouse Square Historic District.

The building also features an oriel window with a crenelated parapet. The building housed the Iowa Falls Sentinel for over 20 years. It began as the Eldora Sentinel in 1857, relocated to Iowa Falls in 1865, and was bought out by its competitor, the Hardin County Citizen, in 1927.

The Budde–Singer Building is a historic building located in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, United States. This three story, brick Italianate structure was built in 1882. It replaced a similar building that had been built in 1856 and destroyed in a fire. Its early Italianate style is unusual for this time period, but it fits into its streetscape with similarly designed buildings, including the neighboring Brazelton House Hotel. The Budde–Singer Building features round arched windows with brick patterned hoodmolds on the second and third floors, and a bracketed wooden cornice. The first floor storefront has been somewhat altered, and the exterior of the building has been painted since about 1909. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

This building features a single storefront, and four segmental arch windows on the second floor with simple brick patterned hood molds. The bracketed metal cornice at the top of the main facade was mass-produced and likely ordered from a catalog. Burd worked for Timmerman and took over the business. J. T. and Mollie Crozier House Historic house in Iowa, United States

The J. T. and Mollie Crozier House is a historic building located in Chariton, Iowa, United States. James Thomas Crozier was a native of Barnsfield, Ohio who settled here in 1878. He clerked in D.D. Waynick's store before he opened his own general store on the town square. The store remained in business until his children retired in 1974. This house replaced the family's former residence that had been destroyed in a March 1918 fire. Crozier hired local architect William L. Perkins to design this house. It is the earliest known residential example of his work. The two-story brick structure shows influences of the American Craftsman and Prairie School styles. The Prairie School is found in the house's horizontal orientation, the lowpitched hip roof, broad eaves, paired windows, the two brick belt courses, and the solarium on the south elevation. The Craftsman influences are found in the French doors, built-in cabinets, and paneling on the interior. Bricks from the house that was destroyed as well as the broad window in the first floor study, its fireplace mantel, and the kitchen windows were reused in this house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.
