Hove Library is a public lending library serving Hove, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. The "highly inventive" Edwardian Baroque/Renaissance Revival-style building, a Carnegie library designed by the architects Percy Robinson and W. Alban Jones of Leeds, opened in 1908 on Church Road, succeeding a library founded in 1890 in a house on the nearby Grand Avenue. The building has been listed at Grade II by Historic England for its architectural and historical importance.
Hove, immediately west of the fashionable resort of Brighton, grew rapidly during the Victorian era: there were a few hundred residents in the 1830s, about 9,000 by 1861, and more than 36,000 by 1901. [4] It became an urban district in 1894 and was incorporated as a municipal borough four years later. [5] Rapid housing development was matched by a generous provision of public buildings: schools, dispensaries, hospitals, churches and a town hall. [4] In April 1890 the forerunner of Hove Borough Council, the Hove Commissioners, set up a committee to investigate how to establish a free library in Hove. Their view was that premises should be rented, as constructing a purpose-built library would be too expensive. The requirements of the Public Libraries Act meant residents had to vote on "the desirability of establishing a public library", and a ballot took place in late March 1891. A majority of residents were in favour. [2] [note 1]
By November 1891 the Commissioners had put aside £500 for the scheme, and William Willett was offering to rent the house at 11 Grand Avenue for £100 per year, rising to £150 in the third year. The £500 would not cover purchasing books, so the Commissioners asked wealthy residents to donate material. By the following month there was enough stock for the library to be opened, initially as a reading room only and with a caretaker rather than a full-time librarian (one was appointed in January 1892 though). Lending facilities began on 24 October 1892. [2] As well as a wide range of books and periodicals, such as complete sets of Punch , the Encyclopædia Britannica and the Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales , collectors of curiosities and artworks such as Constantine Alexander Ionides had lent or donated various items such as reproductions of works by Michelangelo and Raphael, a disembowelling knife, a Japanese executioner's sword and a set of assegai spears. The library was immediately popular: by 1893 there were nearly 600 members, a reference library was created in January 1894, and the opening hours were extended to 11 hours per day with half-day closing on Fridays. By 1900 the hired premises were no longer suitable because of overcrowding and the sheer weight of books, and the borough council formed a committee to investigate whether a permanent library should be built. In the interim, a larger building was hired at 22 Third Avenue, and Hove Library moved there from 23 June 1901. [6]
The library committee—apparently without the knowledge of the wider borough council—approached Andrew Carnegie, who was known for funding many libraries in Britain and abroad, for assistance in 1903. Carnegie agreed to donate £10,000 towards a permanent library building if a site could be found and purchased without a surcharge on the rates and subject to the principles of the Free Public Libraries Act. [6] The site of a council depot on the south side of Church Road, already owned by the council but not yet fully paid for, was identified in that year, and after some difficulties it was chosen in March 1905. The depot was demolished later that year, and an architectural competition was held to find a suitable design for the library. Of the 71 entries, ten were shortlisted and were scrutinised by RIBA president John Belcher. The design submitted by Percy Robinson and W. Alban Jones of Leeds was the winner, and the plans were signed off by the council in October 1906. [3]
After initial works started in February 1907, the foundation stone was laid on 10 June 1907 by the Mayor of Hove, Alderman Bruce Morison. F.G. Minter was the building contractor, having offered the cheapest bid (£9,999) during the tendering process; overall, construction cost £13,500. The new library was opened by Margaret Child Villiers, Countess of Jersey, on 8 July 1908. [3] The two-storey building had a roof garden on the upper floor, to which a glazed screen was added c. 1913. [7] A juvenile library was added in 1920 by converting the basement, and by that year nine staff were employed. [8] Meanwhile, wealthy residents continued to donate thousands of volumes—including many rarities—to the library, [7] along with various artworks and curiosities (all of which were moved to the new Hove Museum at nearby Brooker Hall when that opened in 1927). [8]
The old roof garden was replaced in 1925 by the Wolseley Room, named in memory of Field Marshal Garnet Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley and paid for by his daughter Frances Garnet Wolseley, 2nd Viscountess Wolseley. [8] It was used both for the display of artworks and as a storage and viewing facility for deeds and manorial rolls relating to Sussex parishes. These have been moved to other facilities, but there is still a repository of Wolseley family papers. Money was left to Hove Borough Council to maintain the facility, and the room was refurbished in 1970. [9]
Abortive plans in the 1960s included an eastward extension of the library building (a project curtailed by the destruction of Hove Town Hall in a fire in 1966 and the need to rebuild it) and the opening of a branch library near St Thomas the Apostle's Church in the north of Hove. [9] In December 1983, the contents of Hove's separate music library were integrated into the main library. Hove Music Library had opened a short distance along Church Road from the main library in March 1966. [10] Major refurbishment work was carried out in 1988–89, [11] and the library was awarded Grade II listed status on 2 November 1992. [12]
Architecturally, the façade of Hove Library, designed in 1907 and executed between 1907 and 1908, [3] has been described as "very much of its time" [13] and "one of the most attractive" among "the many public libraries erected in the years prior to World War I". [12] The style has been called Edwardian Classical Revival, [13] Renaissance, [3] Edwardian Baroque [14] and "Wrenaissance" (another term for Edwardian Baroque, referring to its associations with the architecture of Christopher Wren). [12] Other Wrenaissance-style local buildings of this era include Ralli Hall in Hove [15] and 163 North Street, Brighton. [16] Comparisons have also been drawn with the works of architect Edwin Lutyens, active at the time. [13]
The "highly inventive" building is of two storeys and is built of honey-coloured ashlar Doulting stone. [14] [3] The roof is hidden behind a parapet with a balustrade. [12] Below this, centrally placed, is an open pediment with elaborate carvings and a dentil cornice, which continues across the width of the façade below the parapet. Below the pediment is a tall, deeply recessed round-arched opening. At ground-floor level, flanking the Ionic-columned recessed entrance, there are groups of three tall straight-headed windows separated by pilasters and set below prominent entablatures with egg-and-dart moulding and decorative capitals in the form of cherubs' heads. [14] [12] At first-floor level are groups of three round windows with similarly elaborate moulded decoration consisting of garlands and swags. [14] The roof was originally topped with a cupola, but it was removed as structurally unsound in 1967. [7]
An "impressive glass dome" [7] lights the interior, which has been described as "spatially interesting". [14] The entrance hall opens into an octagonal hallway and then beyond into the circular library (above which sat the roof garden). To the right (west) is a reading room; to the east, subsidiary rooms and the staircase leading to the upper storey, from which the highly ornamented dome is visible. There is ornate plasterwork here and in the rotunda above the circular library. [14] [12] Inside the entrance hallway are a series of brass plaques bearing the names of Hove men who died on active service during World Wars I and II, as the town's war memorial on Grand Avenue does not have names. [17]
Grade II listed status, awarded in 1992, is given to "nationally important buildings of special interest". [18] As of February 2001, it was one of 1,124 Grade II-listed buildings and structures, and 1,218 listed buildings of all grades, in the city of Brighton and Hove. [19]
Hove Library was administered by Hove Borough Council until 1 April 1974, [9] when in accordance with the Local Government Act 1972 it came under the control of East Sussex County Council. From 1 April 1997 it became the responsibility of the newly formed unitary authority of Brighton and Hove, now known as Brighton and Hove City Council. [11] The building is now open seven hours per day except Wednesdays (nine hours) and Sundays (closed) and has a café and a range of computer equipment. [1]

Brighton and Hove, a city on the English Channel coast in southeast England, has a large and diverse stock of buildings "unrivalled architecturally" among the country's seaside resorts. The urban area, designated a city in 2000, is made up of the formerly separate towns of Brighton and Hove, nearby villages such as Portslade, Patcham and Rottingdean, and 20th-century estates such as Moulsecoomb and Mile Oak. The conurbation was first united in 1997 as a unitary authority and has a population of about 253,000. About half of the 20,430-acre (8,270 ha) geographical area is classed as built up.
The Freemasons Tavern is a 19th-century pub in the Brunswick Town area of Hove, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. Built in the 1850s in a Classical style similar to the surrounding buildings in the rapidly growing Brunswick Town area, it was given a "spectacular" renovation when a restaurant was added in the 1920s. Local architecture firm Denman & Son designed an ornate Art Deco interior and an elaborate, brightly coloured entrance adorned with Masonic symbols; both the exterior and the interior survive in excellent condition. The tavern is a Grade II Listed building.
Thomas Lainson, FRIBA was a British architect. He is best known for his work in the East Sussex coastal towns of Brighton and Hove, where several of his eclectic range of residential, commercial and religious buildings have been awarded listed status by English Heritage. Working alone or in partnership with two sons as Lainson & Sons, he designed buildings in a wide range of styles, from Neo-Byzantine to High Victorian Gothic; his work is described as having a "solid style, typical of the time".
Barford Court is a care home operated by the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution and situated on the seafront in Hove, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. The building, completed in 1937, has had this function only since 1996; it was constructed by cinema architect Robert Cromie as a private house for Ian Stuart Millar, an eccentric iron industry tycoon, who occupied it for only nine years. The large building later accommodated the Brighton and Hove School of Nursing, which for the first time brought together training provision for all local hospitals' staff on one site. When the school moved away in 1989, the house spent several years on the market awaiting a buyer—and in steadily deteriorating structural condition—before being refurbished, extended, renamed and converted to its present use.
Roundhill Crescent is a late-19th-century housing development in Round Hill, an inner suburb of the English coastal city of Brighton and Hove. Partly developed in the 1860s with large terraced houses on a steeply sloping open hillside, the crescent—which "curves and changes height dramatically along its length"—was finished two decades later and now forms the centrepiece of the Round Hill conservation area. Smaller houses completed the composition in the 1880s, and England's first hospital for the treatment of mental illness was founded in the crescent in 1905. The five original sets of houses from the 1860s have been listed at Grade II by English Heritage for their architectural and historical importance, and the crescent occupies a prominent place on Brighton's skyline.
John Leopold DenmanFRIBA was an architect from the English seaside resort of Brighton, now part of the city of Brighton and Hove. He had a prolific career in the area during the 20th century, both on his own and as part of the Denman & Son firm in partnership with his son John Bluet Denman. Described as "the master of ... mid-century Neo-Georgian", Denman was responsible for a range of commercial, civic and religious buildings in Brighton, and pubs and hotels there and elsewhere on the south coast of England on behalf of Brighton's Kemp Town Brewery. He used other architectural styles as well, and was responsible for at least one mansion, several smaller houses, various buildings in cemeteries and crematoria, and alterations to many churches. His work on church restorations has been praised, and he has been called "the leading church architect of his time in Sussex"; he also wrote a book on the ecclesiastical architecture of the county.
Clayton & Black were a firm of architects and surveyors from Brighton, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove. In a career spanning the Victorian, Edwardian and interwar eras, they were responsible for designing and constructing an eclectic range of buildings in the growing town of Brighton and its neighbour Hove. Their work encompassed new residential, commercial, industrial and civic buildings, shopping arcades, churches, schools, cinemas and pubs, and alterations to hotels and other buildings. Later reconstituted as Clayton, Black & Daviel, the company designed some churches in the postwar period.
The building at 163 North Street in Brighton, part of the English coastal city of Brighton and Hove, was erected in 1904 for an insurance company and has since been used as a branch by several banks and building societies. It now houses a bookmaker's shop. The distinctive pink granite Edwardian Baroque-style office, embellished with towers, decorative carvings and a landmark cupola, has been called "the most impressive building" on Brighton's main commercial thoroughfare. One of many works by prolific local architecture firm Clayton & Black, it has been described as their chef d'œuvre. English Heritage has listed it at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance.
The building at 155–158 North Street in Brighton, part of the English coastal city of Brighton and Hove, was built between 1921 and 1923 as a branch of National Provincial Bank. The King Louis-style bank was built on the site of several shops. The properties were acquired by the National Provincial Bank during 1916–20. The Brighton Gazette had occupied 155a North Street since 1910, when its long-time home at number 150 was converted into the Cinema de Luxe. Published by William James Towner, the paper’s full title was the Brighton Gazette, Hove Post and Sussex Telegraph. In 2011 it became J D Wetherspoon's second pub in central Brighton. One of many buildings by the prolific local architecture firm of Clayton & Black, whose work in various styles can be found across the city, it forms an important component of the range of banks, offices and commercial buildings on North Street—a significant commercial thoroughfare since the 18th century. In particular, the "good attention to detail" shown throughout the building's Louis XIV-style façade has been praised. English Heritage has listed it at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance.
Palmeira Square is a mid-19th-century residential development in Hove, part of the English city and seaside resort of Brighton and Hove. At the southern end it adjoins Adelaide Crescent, another architectural set-piece which leads down to the seafront; large terraced houses occupy its west and east sides, separated by a public garden; and at the north end is one of Hove's main road junctions. This is also called Palmeira Square, and its north side is lined with late 19th-century terraced mansions. Commercial buildings and a church also stand on the main road, which is served by many buses.
Ralli Hall is a community centre, events venue, theatre stage, business hub and impressive main hall in Hove, part of the English coastal city of Brighton and Hove. Built in 1913 as a memorial to Stephen Ralli, a member of a wealthy Greek family who had donated money to many causes throughout Brighton and Hove, it was used for about 60 years as a church hall linked to Hove's parish church. The Brighton & Hove Jewish community subsequently bought it, and in 1976 it came back into use as a community and social centre for Jewish and other groups. The Wrenaissance-style brick structure occupies a prominent corner site in a conservation area and provides a visual contrast to the older villas around it. English Heritage has listed the building at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance.
Adelaide Crescent is a mid-19th-century residential development in Hove, part of the English city and seaside resort of Brighton and Hove. Conceived as an ambitious attempt to rival the large, high-class Kemp Town estate east of Brighton, the crescent was not built to its original plan because time and money were insufficient. Nevertheless, together with its northerly neighbour Palmeira Square, it forms one of Hove's most important architectural set-pieces. Building work started in 1830 to the design of Decimus Burton. The adjacent land was originally occupied by "the world's largest conservatory", the Anthaeum; its collapse stopped construction of the crescent, which did not resume until the 1850s. The original design was modified and the crescent was eventually finished in the mid-1860s. Together with the Kemp Town and Brunswick Town estates, the crescent is one of the foremost pre-Victorian residential developments in the Brighton area: it has been claimed that "outside Bath, [they] have no superior in England". The buildings in the main part of Adelaide Crescent are Grade II* listed. Some of the associated buildings at the sea-facing south end are listed at the lower Grade II.
Horatio Nelson Goulty was an English architect. He designed several buildings in Brighton and was an important figure in the town's public affairs in the early Victorian era.
Thomas Simpson (1825–1908) was a British architect associated with the seaside town of Brighton. As architect to the Brighton and Preston School Board and the equivalent institution in neighbouring Hove, he designed "a distinguished group of board schools" during the late 19th century, when the provision of mass education was greatly extended. Many of these schools survive and some have listed status. He also worked on five Nonconformist chapels for various Christian denominations, using a wide variety of materials and architectural styles. He was the father of Sir John William Simpson and Gilbert Murray Simpson, who both became architects.
The English coastal city of Brighton and Hove has a long and varied history of libraries going back over 250 years. Subscription libraries were among the earliest buildings in the resort of Brighton, which developed in the late 18th century; by the 1780s these facilities, which were more like social clubs than conventional book-borrowing venues, were at the heart of the town's social scene. The Brighton Literary Society, its successor the Brighton Royal Literary and Scientific Institution and its rival the Sussex Scientific Institution between them established a "very fine collection" of publications by the mid-19th century, and these books were donated to the town when a public library was founded in 1871. Neighbouring Hove, originally a separate village, established its own public library in 1890.
The Percy and Wagner Almshouses are a group of 12 almshouses in the inner-city Hanover area of the English coastal city of Brighton and Hove. The first six date from 1795 and are among the few pre-19th-century buildings left in the city. Six more were added in a matching style in 1859. They are the only surviving almshouses in Brighton and have been listed at Grade II for their architectural and historical importance.
Princes House is an office and residential building in the centre of Brighton, part of the English coastal city of Brighton and Hove. The prominently sited building, an example of Harry Stuart Goodhart-Rendel's "inimitable response to Modernism", was purpose-built as the headquarters of the Brighton & Sussex Building Society, forerunner of the Alliance & Leicester. The office was later used by Norwich Union, another financial institution, and now houses a restaurant and flats. The steel-framed structure is clad in red bricks with inlaid mosaicwork, forming a carefully detailed façade, and the corner elevation has an arrangement of brickwork and windows which suggests "the pleated folds of a curtain". The building is listed at Grade II for its architectural and historical importance.
