The iPhone 16e is a smartphone developed and marketed by Apple Inc. as part of its iPhone series. It is part of the eighteenth-generation iPhone line-up, together with the iPhone 16, the iPhone 16 Plus, and the Pro models iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. [1] Announced as an affordable model on February 19, 2025, it was released with a starting price of US$599, which is $170 more than its predecessor, third generation of iPhone SE.

Contents

It is the first entry-level iPhone model to feature the edge-to-edge display, Face ID and USB-C port instead of Lightning port.

It has the same dimensions and front as either the 2021 iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro or the 2022 iPhone 14. It includes an A18 SoC (with 4 GPU cores instead of 5, unlike the regular iPhone 16), an action button instead of a mute switch, a single 2-in-1 48MP Fusion camera lens, a brand new custom-made Apple C1 cellular modem, and supports Apple Intelligence. [2] [3]

Unlike the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models, iPhone 16e lacks several features, including Camera Control, an ultra-wide camera lens, second-generation ultra-wideband, and support for Qi2 and MagSafe charging. Its display, shared with the iPhone 14, retains the notch cutout instead of the Dynamic Island. It is positioned similar to the entry-level iPhone 5c, which launched alongside the iPhone 5s and omitted some of its features. [4]

After the iPhone 16e's announcement, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone SE (3rd generation) were discontinued, making all the iPhone models completely transitioned from the proprietary Lightning port to the universal USB-C port. [5]

History

The successor to the iPhone SE (3rd generation) was originally rumored to be named as the iPhone 16e. [6]

However, when Apple announced on February 19, 2025, the successor to the third generation iPhone SE had been named as the "iPhone 16e", which means the iPhone 16e could serve as the entry-level model of the iPhone 16 series. [7]

The iPhone 16e was officially announced on February 19, 2025.

Apple will start taking pre-orders on February 21, 2025, with the general availability on February 28, 2025. [8]
