Ikechi Nwachukwu Nwosu // ( Loudspeaker.svg listen ) was an Anglican archbishop [1] in Nigeria: [2] he was Bishop of Umahia, one of nine dioceses [3] within the Anglican Province of Aba, [4] itself one of 14 provinces within the Church of Nigeria: [5] He retired in 2019, having been bishop for sixteen years [6] and Archbishop of Aba.

He was appointed Archbishop of Aba Province in 2011. [7]

Nwosu was born in Ihiagwa on 24 November 1949.

Nwosu gained his Dip. Th. at Trinity Theological College, Umuahia in 1978, followed by Cert. Th. from Wycliffe Hall in 1980, B.D. from the University of London in 1983, M.A. in New Testament at the University of Nigeria in 1988, and Ph.D. from Ridley Hall, Cambridge in 1995. [8]

He was ordained in 1978, [9] [10] became a Canon in 1987; and an Archdeacon in 1994.

He has been Rector of Trinity Theological College, Umuahia and was Director of the Ibru Centre, Agbarha-Otor in Ughelli, Delta State from 1999 until 2003, when he became Bishop of Umuahia.

He took office as Dean of the Church of Nigeria (remaining bishop and archbishop) on 24 July 2016 at Archbishop Vinning Memorial Cathedral, Ikeja. [11]

The Church of Nigeria is the Anglican church in Nigeria. It is the second-largest province in the Anglican Communion, as measured by baptised membership, after the Church of England. Two of the major events that contributed to the movement were the 2002 decision of the Diocese of New Westminster in Canada to authorise a rite of blessing for same-sex unions, and the nomination of two openly gay priests in 2003 to become bishops. Jeffrey John, an openly gay priest with a long-time partner, was appointed to be the next Bishop of Reading in the Church of England and the General Convention of the Episcopal Church ratified the election of Gene Robinson, an openly gay non-celibate man, as Bishop of New Hampshire. Jeffrey John ultimately declined the appointment due to pressure.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Umuahia is a diocese located in the city of Umuahia. It was part of the Old Ecclesiastical Province of Onitsha, but presently, it belongs to the Ecclesiastical province of Owerri, in Nigeria, which was erected on March 26, 1994.

The Episcopal/Anglican Province of Alexandria is a province of the Anglican Communion. Its territory was formerly the Diocese of Egypt with North Africa and the Horn of Africa. On 29 June 2020 the diocese was elevated to the status of an ecclesiastical province, and became the forty-first province of the Anglican Communion.
